Mal awoke at the feet of Semphine with trepidation in his thought and nausea in his heart. Something felt oh so terribly wrong as Mal slowly moved his aching body to uneasy feet. Mal was still standing in the dark corridor and now facing the statue of Semphine, however while he once looked at the god with worship, adoration and love he now felt… nothing. No that was not right, there was something there as he looked into the cold angry eyes of his former god. Mal felt anger, he felt betrayal and he felt disgust. The reasoning for these emotions did not matter to Mal all he knew was that he could never go back to the poisonous arms of Semphine. A spike of fear ran though Mal, what if what he was now feeling was the influence of an evil god or a demon or something even darker, what if he was straying from the true light of Semphine and was destined for eternal torment just as the high priest always said? Mal dropped to his knees, head in hands as he tried to figure out what was happening. A lifetime of conditioning warred with his indisputable feelings. He knew that he should repent to Sepmphine and regain his love, he wished that he could return to being blissfully faithful however he also knew that he could not go back to Sepmphine. Mal gazed up to his god he looked deep at the beautiful features marred by a cruel smirk that he had never noticed he stared at what he once thought was loving but now could only see as cruel eyes. He thought back to the countless hours of sermons he attended, the sermons which he always thought of as just and kind but now could only see as colonising and vindictive.
Without conscious thought Mal began to walk, his mind was a flurry of thoughts and emotions as he deconstructed his whole life within his mind. He went through the lies, the half truths and the bigotry. He saw with fresh eyes how his town was so corrupted and foul and finally he thought of the years of torment which he and everyone beside his mother had put Nath through. Even this very day he had tried to strike his cousin, for what? Disagreeing with him, stating how everyone had mistreated her? He needed to apologise to her, not just for today but for the years of similar days where he had been an ass to her. Mal continued to review his life in shock and horror as he realised the kind of person who he was, the person he had been. Mal was thrown out of his thoughts when he realised that he had stopped walking. In front of him was a large statue of an angelic being. It had a muscular imposing physique with large wings extending from its back. Its face was fine and delicate yet the edges were too sharp giving it an otherworldly appearance however inexplicably its eyes seemed kind and it felt. Welcoming. Mal, seemingly unaware of the enormity of his actions walked forwards and calmly placed his hand upon the gods chest. What next filled Mal’s vision would change his life forever.

This however was the last straw for Mal. His mind had been battered around and his world shook for the enormity of this prompt to sink in. Epic quests were only seen a handful of times throughout a country during the span of decades. For a level zero nobody to gain one right out of the gate… Mal could not comprehend it and after all the prior revelations of the day he finally shut down. Mal did not notice as the world faded and rematerialized in the familiar. He did not notice the fact that it was dark and all were asleep nor did he realize the walk back to his house. Mal did not see the anxious face of his mother as he walked into his house nor her sad eyes as she assumed that he was still classless. He simply walked to his bed and let the sweet bliss of oblivion take him.
