The Phoenix - Chapter 5

When Mirabelle left Buster, she had thought she was starting a new life. She had a new relationship lined up. A new home. A new job. All of it fell apart. Within a year she was back in her childhood home caring for her dying mother. She had finished burying her and inherited the house when the Martenwol Massacre happened.

When she first pulled up the pseudonet after the funeral and saw Buster's picture she thought she was going insane with grief. But no, it was really him. The bumbling oaf with a mean streak who had wasted her 20s and lied to her about what he did for Nakuna was still finding ways to make her life worse. One of the few points of data that the media had on Buster Harkness was that he had a wife, so every day she woke up to a new torrent of abuse waiting for her. She even got a visit from Nakunan representatives, assuring her that they had concluded their investigation into her and found no evidence that she was ever in contact or culpable. They offered no sympathy and did nothing to stem the harassment.

She was going to have to sell the house she had just inherited because she no longer felt safe in it.

All thanks to Buster. He had ruined her life once. He somehow managed to do it again even when he was no longer a part of it.

Then one day, while she was clearing out the death threats and transphobia, she found a friendly message waiting for her:

Hello Mirabelle! I thought you could use a friendly face right now. You probably don't remember me, I was friends with Buster back in University and we hung out together for awhile. You were a good friend and I missed you when Buster stopped wanting to hang out. I felt so bad when I saw your name on the news, I can't imagine what you're going through. The good news is, I've got something that will burn Buster Harkness to the fucking ground. And I thought you might want to help, because if anyone has a reason to want to take Buster Harkness down as much I do: it's you. Regardless, I hope we can catch up because you were a good friend and I'm sorry I let Buster get in the way of that.

The message was signed Kincade Vandermewe.
