Chapter 4: Confronting One’s Demons

Chapter 4: Confronting One’s Demons

Unfortunately, the demonic version of me didn't vanish when the darkness was cast away. Instead, she somehow seems even more pissed off.

"Damn it! Damn it, damnit, damn it! You little bitch, you ruined everything! I could have been so powerful! But you just had to break five of the seals! Fine, I'll kill you off and control your sorry excuse for a corpse!” My demonic counterpart screams.

Then she extends out her right hand, then fire seeps out of her arm and runs down it, coalescing in her hand. Suddenly the fire jumps into the air and starts to mold itself into a long rod, when it reaches four feet in length one end splits into four prongs with very sharp points at the ends while the other end curls around into some kind of sharpened hook. Then the whole thing solidified into solid black metal with an eerie sheen. The demon grabs the pitchfork out of the air and lets out another ear piercing screech that forces me to cover my ears.

“Die you insolent bitch!” She screams while diving towards me at very high speed. I barely have enough time to register what's going on and dive out of the way. Unfortunately, the pitchfork nicks my leg as the demon slams into the metaphorical ground where I was, leaving a nasty gash while sending me flying. I cover my head and brace for the impact of hitting the ground, but it never arrives. I open my eyes to find that I am still flying through the white space, seemingly unaffected by gravity or even air resistance. The fear and panic I had moments ago spikes when I manage to get a glimpse of the demon while tumbling. She’s following behind, and from the looks of it slowly getting closer. I flail my arms around trying to stop my tumbling, and somehow manage to right myself so I’m facing the demon after a few seconds. She’s not flapping her wings, instead using the weird flight magic succubus have. That, combined with the fact she seems zeroed in on me paints the freaky picture of an evil dart trying to catch me and steal my soul. Which is not helping my panic level.

I try to calm myself down, she is catching up to me but I have at least twenty seconds before she gets into stabbing range with that pitchfork. I need to think and act carefully, maybe I can stall her out. Eventually she’ll get bored and leave, right? Who am I kidding? From the crap she’s said it sounds like she’s trying to possess me, like hell she will just give up and leave. But how the hell do I fight a demon!? She mentioned seals before, maybe corresponding to the seven sins? She said I broke five and in five of the scenarios I caused the shattering thing so that must be it. But what about the first two? Sloth and gluttony, I didn't shatter those, but I'm fairly certain I didn't give in either. Do I need to beat them? Can I even give them another try? Probably not, and I don't think the demon can do anything either, I'm pretty sure I’ve broken her power over this place. Wait, if she can't control it anymore, can I?

I need to do something fast, as she’s getting closer every second. Her bloody thirsty, furry filled eyes becoming clearer and clearer with each passing moment. Well I might as well try it, not like I have any weapons to fight her with anyway. I quickly go through a couple of things, imagining a wall popping up between us, wanting to be in a different environment like home, and lastly, throwing my hands out and screaming “hokus pokus!” The last attempt left the demon none to amused.

“Are you mocking me!? I’ll tear you to pieces, I will….” I ignored the rest of the demons ranting in favor of thinking of more ways to save myself. Maybe I could grab the pitchfork when she thrusts it? That sounds like a good way to get skewered. Try to dodge it at the last second? Maybe, but that won't fix the still in range to get stabbed problem. I could try dodging and kicking off her to change my trajectory, but that would only buy me a little time. Damn it, why did it have to be me!? Why am I getting turned into a fucking demon!?

I didn't think fast enough, and now the demoness is basically right on top of me. “Good bye little spec, no one will miss your passing.” She says as she pulls back her weapon for a stab. All I can do is watch, petrified by my fear, as she lines up to run me through. Then I hear something, though it may be more accurate to say that I felt it. Everything seems to slow to an almost complete standstill as I get this feeling at the back of my… I can’t even describe where it's coming from, but I know what it wants. It’s calling to me, asking me to reach out, to use it. So I do, I don't know how I do it, I just do. I reach out and pull on it, call back to it, asking it to….. do something. In response it fills me, I feel it in that moment, understand it as it fills me completely in all aspects, mind, body, and soul. Magic, another key aspect of the universe. So poorly understood by man, as we operate in the first through third dimensions, but magic is the fifth. Strange and fickle, it only wishes to be used in the ways it permits. Attempting otherwise usually has disastrous results, and retribution against the offender.

I’m bound by those rules the same as anyone else, but so is the demon. And the magic is telling me, I can use it here. And once I smash the final two seals, the demon won't be able to. In the back of my mind, I hear the words that clear away my panic and bring clarity to my mind.

Despite time seeming to still be slowed, I bring my hand up at normal speed. I grab the pitchfork mid thrust by the shaft and simply yank it out of her hands. It burns like hell to hold, and immediately I feel agony run through my hands and up my arms. It’s not actually burning my hands, from what I can tell, but it feels a hell of alot like it. I push through the pain and continue noticing the demon doesn't even seem to register what is happening. That is until I spin the fork around and jam it into her gut with all my might. At that point her expression slowly starts to switch from one of glee to one of anger and agony. I don’t give her any time to recuperate as I pull myself in closer to her using the pitchfork then plant my foot to her chest and give her a good kick to create distance. It's a good thing I did, as moments later the demon seems to speed back up to normal time, except now with a pitchfork jammed into her stomach. She doesn't even hesitate to reach down and yank it out, the barbed ends pulling fresh flesh with them on their exit, and she screams all the while.

I watch in fascinated horror as the wound on her stomach quivers, and then rapidly closes, becoming perfectly smooth once more without even a hint of a scar. The demon looks from her stomach to me once more, her eyes holding intense hatred and fury, somehow she is even more angry than before. She doesn't say anything, just conjures up fire and uses it to burn the flesh from the tips of the fork. All of the sudden she jabs the fork in my direction in a rapid thrust, all the fire leaps off the end and flies at me like a ball of fire. I don’t want around for the fireball to reach me, instead conjuring a foothold in the whitespace and kicking off of it to dodge. My plan works, and I sail off to the side, out of the way of the fireball, only willing myself to stop against another fake wall once I’m well clear. The demoness sneers at me and spreads her wings like she wants to try and intimidate me.

“You think you can get out of this alive, even weakened I’m more powerful than you! I’ll kill you well before you can break the remaining two seals, so just lay down and die already!” She screams at me. I just realized that in all this chaos I forgot about the remaining two seals, I was too focused on trying to kill the demon. Well, time to see if I can revisit those seals. I will myself to go back to the first test, the test of the sloth seal. Suddenly the white void around me warps, somehow the white slowly changes shape until it starts to change color, and with a sudden jerk it all solidifies into an environment resembling my room. Suddenly the lethargy hits me like a freight train on crack and I stumble forward, catching myself on my bed. My oh so soft and comfortable bed…. Why do I hear sizzling? At that moment a pitchfork pierced its way through the wall over my bed, raining embers and moldering debris down onto it. A moment later it was ripped out to reveal a fairly decent sized hole, through which the demonic version of me stared through.

“Did you think that little trick would work to get rid of me?” She hissed. Right guess the environment change didn’t get rid of my angry demon counterpart. I snatch my phone off the bedside table and bolt out of the bedroom, slamming the door closed behind me. It didn't do much, as a moment later she came crashing through. She continues on after plowing through the door, smashing through the banister of the stairs and getting herself partially stuck in the wall above the stairs. I take the opportunity to dive under her, tumbling my way down the stairs and slamming into the front door. I reach up and grab the handle, using it to pull myself up while at the same time throwing open the door and scrambling outside. I pull the phone up while running off the porch but to my surprise the world freezes and then shatters, reverting back into the white space.

I hear a thud behind me, and turn around to find the demon on the floor in a position that implies she landed face first after falling. I stifle a laugh as she slams her hand out and propers her face up, looking at me as pissed off as ever. “Damn you!” She screams while leaning on her pitchfork and slowly climbing to her feet. She takes hold the pitchfork with both her hands and makes the same movements she did before to throw the fireball, but this time nothing happens, all she does is thrust into the air. “No! No, no, no, no, no, no! Not like this, I can't die like this! I had so much I could have done, so much I could have been! And you just had to take it all away from me! If I go down I’m taking you with me!” She screams.

I ignore her, instead opting to move onto the seal of gluttony. She has no magic and no power over this place anymore. As long as I keep my distance I should be able to destroy the last seal. Instantly the surroundings warp again, and when it finally stabilizes I’m once again standing in the dining room with a single plate on the table that is surrounded by a mountain of food. The effects of the test start to set in, I feel saliva pooling in my mouth and a pit in my stomach demanding to be filled. I don't feel the effects for long though. I’m alerted to the demon's presence once more by rapid and heavy stomping on the wooden floor behind me, almost as if she’s charging at me. I throw myself to the floor just in time to avoid the pitchfork of my demon counterpart, who tried to run me through by leaping at me. She flies over my head, sailing straight into the buffet on the table, resulting in the catastrophic, and very noisy, destruction of basically everything as she slid across and fell off the other side.

I’m not demon expert, but for being a supposedly superior version of me she seems to be fucking incompetent, maybe its the narcissism. It could also be the fact I shattered some of the seals to begin with, enough to hamper her. She probably didn't know how to deal with that happening. I stand up to finish the test, but everything suddenly shatters. No warning in the form of cracking this time, just the sound of shattering glass and the white void suddenly returning. The only things remaining are me and my demonic counterpart.

"No please, no, I don't want to die!" My demonic counterpart says in a pleading voice. She stands up and tries to stumble towards me but quickly falls back to the ground, seeming to writhe in agony. I see why a moment later, as she starts to simply melt away into a red goop that quickly evaporates. I stay well away, watching from a distance as the process begins slowly and barely noticeable, but quickly picking up speed. It took a grand total of maybe ten seconds, and then there was nothing left, no trace to even insinuate she may have been here at some point, not even the pitch fork.

The moment that last little tidbit whispered in the back of my head a red mist starts to seep out of the white space and swirl around me. I start to panic, as it is giving off a demonic feel. I try to look for an opening but any time I see one the most quickly fills it, almost as if it knew my intentions. The mist keeps growing in intensity until all I can see around me is a wall of solid red. Then all at once it rushes at me. All I can do is cover my head and scream. Upon reaching me it begins to seep into every part of my body. Going through my skin, feeling like lava penetrating every layer to reach the bones. It goes in through my eyes, mouth, ears, nose, literally everywhere. Why is this happening, I thought I won!? As I fall to the ground writhing in agony, another whisper somehow sounds out as clear as can be in the back of my head.

- Error, previous race no longer available.

- Generating new race.

That was the last thing I heard before I was put to sleep by the magic.
