Chapter 16: Wing Inspection

Chapter 16: Wing Inspection

God I hate paperwork, it's like homework but feels slightly less pointless. The UN forum was easy enough to fill out, just name, d.o.b, date you got system access, and the geographical area you were in when you got access. Now the United States paperwork, that shit was horrendous. Like the UN paperwork my ass! They wanted everything, social security number, which I barely managed to remember, name, d.o.b, current residence, drivers license if you have one, how much you make, how often you were exposed to magic, the works. All of that in the tiniest spacing and fonts imaginable. But it was thankfully done, and when I checked my mana I was dropping just below three fifty. Not great, but not critical either.

I opted to 'head out' immediately after the paperwork was finished. Not like I could cast any spells with my mana situation being what it is anyway, not without screwing myself over. Really I just left the gym through the locker rooms and went into a bathroom farther in the school to recharge my mana. I might have made the walk home but I don't want to risk it. And thank god I left early and through the other entrance to the locker rooms that connects to the rest of the school. Demesa had warned us that since the location of the event was public, and there were expected to be a lot of new magic users, this place would be swarming with recruiters when we went to leave.

And when I looked out a window and saw a fairly large crowd standing around outside the gym I realized she was right. Most of the people were anywhere from decently dressed to wearing suits and were clearly recruiters of some kind. The rest were casual dressed, probably friends and family waiting for those inside to finish. They of course were being chatted up by the recruiters, probably in an attempt to earn favor. All in all I didn't feel like dealing with that crowd's bullshit, especially since Demesa mentioned that since I'm so young they are gonna be trying hard to recruit me.

Thankfully the hooligans outside the gym didn't notice me back through the window so I was able to slip away. Now I'm in a handicap stall with all my new bits out as I lean against the wall while browsing Vidshare on my phone. Cute cat videos will always be good. But I've been browsing for the past hour, and I'm starting to get tired of them. I let out a sigh, which causes my wings to rub against the wall a little, bringing my attention to them. I contemplate for a moment, then decide I need to at least know what I'm dealing with and test my new parts thoroughly. At a minimum I'll have to be dealing with them for a long time until I figure out how to change back. Worst case, I'm stuck like this forever.

The horns aren't that complex, and I can't really do anything with them. Though I swear they have gotten a little taller, I'm going to have to start measuring. Charles will probably be more than happy to help with that, damn demon obsessed weirdo he is. My eyes are the same, at least I think they are. Aside from the whole being orange now and giving off the slightest of glows. My range of motion with them seems to be the same. I don't know if any vision improvements are from them or my stats though, or maybe the stats are good because of the eyes? Going down I get to the most obvious part, my wings.

I have never tried fully unfurling them yet. Honestly I've been a bit afraid, I know they will be big, but I'm not sure exactly how big. I stand in the middle of the stall and slowly start to extend them, feeling a weird bliss as the new but hardly used parts finally get to flex and stretch. I keep going, the feeling intensifying as their reach increases bit by bit. Then I hit the wall on my right, followed shortly by the wall on my left. Snapped out of the almost hypnotic euphoria I take a look to find the two massive appendages taking up a large amount of the stall space. They aren't even fully extended, I can tell they can stretch out a bit more. I start moving to my left while retracting that wing, giving the right one more space to extend. By the time I'm done stretching it up my right wing is around a mind boggling nine feet in length.

My curiosity gets the better of me and I start to move it around, flexing and bending it various ways to get a feel for it. Calling it flexible might be an understatement. I can easily curl the wing around my front and then wrap it around my side and to my back again, almost making me a wing and Lucy burrito. Twisting it in the other direction I can almost get it to bend to a ninety degree angle before it starts to hurt. A little more experimentation reveals I have a wide range of motion shifting the wings up and down and can easily twist them about fourth degrees each way to change the leading edge.

OK, maybe a little cool… aside from the fact I'm not supposed to have them! I retracted the right wing and repeat the process, both getting a good stretch in and confirming they are symmetrical. I pull the left wing up to my face and examine it more closely. I can see the blood vessels branching off the bones and running through the rest of the skin. The skin itself seems to be slightly thinner than the skin on the rest of my body. I run my hand over it, finding it super smooth. The bones supporting the large surface area of the wing just barely stick out from the surface. I grab one with two fingers and give it a very light squeeze only to feel a twitch run up the wing and into my back.

Letting go I pull the wings back into their resting position, just barely larger than my back and peaking out above my shoulders once again. Damn, that's some impressive compaction right there. Moving on to the tail it is still the same as the first time I saw it. Four feet in length. I can move it around every which way and use it like a third hand basically. Yea so I just basically only learned something new about my wings, which is good. I wonder if I can fly with them? I mean they look big enough, but I've also heard that there's a bunch of factors contributing to a creature being able to fly or not. Maybe I should ask Charles if succubus can fly with only their wings, answer might be the same.

Well now that that's out of the way, what's my mana at?

Mana: 1397/2882

Hmmm, yea good enough for me to get home. I think as I put my wings away and start redressing myself.
