The Necromancer of Justice Chapter 9

Skillfully dodging the doll’s sword thrust Skyler moved in for the kill.

*Wack* He struck it hard across the neck.   The doll wasn’t damaged, nothing he did seemed to damage it, but it did pause for a few seconds allowing him to follow up with a few more good hits.

After a few seconds it recovered and took a swing at him.  He blocked it and took a shot at its knees causing it to quickly jump back.  The two stared at each other across the small space preparing for the next encounter.

“I’m getting pretty good at this” He thought to himself moving in again.

Suddenly the doll stopped and moved back to its original position.

“Looks like this round is over.”

*Ting*

Strength rises by 1 point. (+1 STR)

The instructor came in looking more grumpy than usual.

“I’m ready for my next round.”  He told him smiling.

“I’m afraid that’s not possible.”

“What?  Why not?  I thought you said anyone could train here?”   Was the instructor going to discriminate against him even more?  What was that guy's problem anyways?

“Your training is done.”

“What?” he said at first not understanding what the instructor was talking about.

“You heard me.” He said grumpily.

Skylar started to smile.  Finally, it had taken him a full two month game time, but now he was finally finished.  He felt a great sense of accomplishment.  Even justice bunny seemed happy although maybe he was just projecting onto him.

“Here is your reward for finishing the first training.”

*Ting*

Receive Item:  Ring of CompletionLearned New Skill: Parry

“The first, does that me I can start on another one?”

“Sure, but not here.  At least now I’ve finally seen the last of your sorry ass.”

“Where can I do the next training?”

“Do you look like your nursemaid?  Figure it out yourself.”  He said and stormed out.

Smiling to himself he went to town to celebrate.   Well as much as he could celebrate with his meager funds.   On the way he ran into Maria.

“Hey Maria.”

“Hi Skylar.”

“I heard you passed the training you were doing.”

“Yea, finally done.”

“Here I backed this for you in celebration.”

“Thanks!  Your bread is always the best.”

She seemed to like the compliment.

“What will you do now.”

“I don’t know.  I need to find more spells, but I’ve been all over town and there doesn’t seem to be anything.  I guess I’ll just go out and fight some monsters to raise my level.”

“I see.  That’s too bad.  What about asking the guy who gave you your class.”

“He seems to have disappeared.”

“That is problematic.  Hmm…. have you tried the general store?”

“There’s a general store?”  He thought he had been to every store in town, but he had never heard of that one.

“Yes, when the town was small it was the only store, but as the town grew a lot of new stores opened up and most people just kind of forgot about it.   It also doesn’t help that the proprietary is a bit difficult to deal with.”

He’d given up hope on getting any new spells any time soon.  Now it looked like there was another chance.

“That’s great!   Where is it.”

“You shouldn’t get your hopes up too much.  The store is mostly forgotten for a reason.”  She said then gave him directions.

****************************************************************************************************

When he found the place later he started to understand why it was forgotten.  The place was run down to say the least.   The wood was well weathered, and in poor repair.  It looked like it had been painted white at some point, but most of that had chipped off over the year.

Still it was his last chance…

He walked up to the door.

*Crack* His foot fell through a rotten plank.

is this place really still open?”

When he opened the door a bell rung.  Understandably no one is at the counter.  Looking around he would think there main produce was dust.  Everything was covered by it along with cobwebs.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

He browsed around looking at what was one the shelves.  An old rusted sword.  A potions of some sort.  What looked like a human skull?  Just what kind of store was this anyway?

“Can I help you?” Asked an old man who fit the decor asked after he finally arrived.

“Yes, I’m looking for skill books.”

“Third shelf down on the right.”

There were a number of skill books there mixed in with trashy romance novels and various other texts.

“Let see “Energy Blast” no can’t learn it.  “Triple strike” No not that one either.  “Storm of blades” Unfortunately not.   Finally he was down to the last book.  “Shadow Walk.”  Sounds promising.  He opened up the item window.

*Ting*

“Darn it” He felt dejected.  Guess he really shouldn't have gotten his hopes up after all.

“Do you have any more skill books” He asked without much hope.

“Maybe in the store room.”

“Great, can you go check it?”

….

“No”

“No?  Why not?”

“That place hasn’t been cleaned in years.”

He was definitely starting to see why this place was so run down and forgotten.

“What if I clean it for you?”

“I’m not paying for that.”

“I’ll do it for free.” He said gritting his teeth.

“Fine, but don’t think of running of with anything.  I have ways of knowing you know…”

“I wouldn’t dreaming of it.”

When he got to the room it was worse than he expected.   More like a trash dump then a store room.   When he got done he was irate.   Not a single skill book.  Was all this for nothing?

Suddenly he had any idea.  He activated his magic sight.  A few of the items started glowing, but what really interested him was the floor. Something was underneath it.  He peeled back one of the rotting boards to find a book underneath.

Feeling a rush of excitement he grabbed it.

“Sword of Flaming Darkness”

He opened up the item window.

*Ting*

“Yes” Finally he caught a break.

“How much for this?” He asked the proprietor.

“Oh, that.  I forgot I even had that.  5 gold.”

Skylar’s heart sank.  He made some money killing monsters, but all of that added up to only around 1 gold.

“I don’t have it.  Can you save it for me?”

The man scoffed at him.

“No.”

Should have figured it.  Probably no one would come in here and buy it anyways… probably.   That was the best he could hope for anyways.

He started to leave determined to kill monsters as quickly as possible.

“Wait.”

Skylar stopped.

“You may have noticed that this place is a little run down.  If you could fix it up for me I may see fit to give it to you for only say… 2 gold.”

“Make it one gold and we have a deal.”

“One gold?  You're robbing me blind here…”

“That’s all I have.”

The old man considered for a few moments.  Fine, but you better do a good job.
