Chapter 10: The Wolf Part 1
Aura tells me that the village shouldn’t be too far from our location. Once I get there I can ask where the nearest demon territory is, or if I am lucky, am already in demon territory. In the meanwhile I’ll check the remainder of my skills.
Mun concentrates on seeing his stats and skills, shortly after letters begin to form in front of him, creating a neat table with the information he desires. This time around, Mun decides to check Shapeshifter(eater) first and then move on to his ability skewer. Dark-vison and Lowlight, mun feels, is self-explanatory so, decides against checking those two skills for now. The two skills have activated automatically thus far so there is no need to check them for now.
Dark-vison, or so Mun thinks, allows him to see in pitch black darkness, it was very useful when fighting the monsters inside the dungeon, many of the monsters only had lowlight, giving Mun the advantage in most fights. Low light is a bit different but serves a similar function, while dark-vison makes everything seem like a 50s tv show when in complete darkness, low light color corrects everything, making it appear as if a room is brightly lit. This means that even with just moon light Mun is able to see as if it is the morning, Demons like aura are naturally born with this ability. Humans are the only intelligent species that are not born with lowlight, on some rare occasions, half-breeds are born without low-light, though this is uncommon.
Mun concentrates on the shapeshifter skill, almost immediately, a new screen appears in front of his stats screen.
Shapeshifter(eater) Ex(extraordinary) Level: 2
Shapeshifter(Eater) Is an ability that very few creatures have. The only known creatures to have this ability are all from the Mimic family. This ability allows a creature to use what it has consumed to change it’s body and make it stronger. Though, because this skill is only used by Mimics, it is not considered a terrifying skill like the Polymorph skill is.
Cargo(1): 300Lbs/600lbs
Assimilation completion(1): Dolum(60%) time until completion 120 minutes
Sp: 2/ (2) lb. consumed Mana: 1/(2)minute
Mun finds himself quite surprised at the complexity of this skill. The skill doesn’t talk about his ability to actually shapeshift, but rather focuses on the eating aspect of the ability. The skill makes Mun curious on how the regular shapeshifter skill is like or what the Polymorph skill is. Behind all of these thoughts lingered an even greater question, who has written these descriptions. After thinking about it he could only guess that Loom, the person who gave him this ability , is the one who is writing the information.
I should look at my next skill now, Mun thinks to himself as he closes the skill menu.
Skewer: Na(Natrual) Level: 1
Skewer is a skill that sends the users tendril(s) to attack a target. A powerful skill when used on unsuspecting people but very useful in ordinary combat too.
Tedril(s)(1): 1-3 Accuracy(1): +1% Execution(1):+1% Surprise(1): +2%
Sp: 20
Mun looks at the screen for a good while, trying to understand how skills work in this world. Firstly, he wonders, why the skill doesn’t show the damage it will do. In games, Skills explain the damage it deals, then theirs is the fact that in most games, skills can’t be dodged. Yet this attack skill does not show the damage it can deal but instead shows him the probability that the skill will hit its target, or rather the increased probability it will hits target. Then he thinks.
Perhaps my Status skill isn’t high enough and because of that it doesn’t show everything. Hmm yeah I’ll check that now.
But before He can pull the screen up, a large wolf comes flying through the woods, hitting Mun In the Process.
“Guh!!” Mun makes a strange sound, as if the air in his lungs fly out as the wolf makes contact. Aura, who was right next to Mun only a few moments ago, Stood in her positioned, shocked and confuse. At that moment, as Mun lays on the floor, buried under a huge layer of fur, Mun push’s the huge wolf of himself.
This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.
“Father!!” The wolf cries, howling so loudly that Aura covers her ears in pain. Mun now taking a good look at the large wolf, sees how beautifully majestic the creature looks. The wolf is covered in grey fur only having white fur around his eyes that flows like a spiral all throughout its body leading to the tips of its tail. Racoon is the first thought that pops into Muns mind to describe The wolfs appearance. Then a second after, Mun now over the shock, wonders, “Did this wolf just talk?”
Before Mun can even try to talk to the wolf, the wolf flies back into the woods, ignoring both Aura and Mun the thing it the wolf crashed into. All Mun can do at the moment is sit on the ground, looking at the wolf gracefully run throughout he forest. Aura on the hand starts to lower her brows, in worry, her anxiety causing her to making fists with her hands.
“Wolves, travel in packs. Father told me that.” Aura flips her head, telling Mun, her face full with worry. She is scared, she despite everything Mun has been able to do, she doesn’t think Mun can take the wolves on; therefore, she is scared. Wolves are not fearsome creatures because of the strength, no; the people of this world fear these wolves because their ability to coordinate in packs as large as 500. A wolf pack can be anywhere from 50 wolves to 500, with perfect coordination, even a small army can fall to wolves. There is a saying in the demon territory when it comes to wolves, “make sure People can identify you.”
In this moment, Aura is terrified that her life will end, but inside her heart is not fear for herself, no. Aura is a caring girl, she fears that if she dies here and now “Yeo, who will save Yeo?” that is the thought running through her mind. Mun wouldn’t believe someone would do this, he has seen to much to trust people any longer But in this moment he understands that Aura does not want to die.
“Lets go!” Mun forcibly grabs Aura, she doesn’t resist, and starts to carry her like a piece of Luggage. Mun can hear wolves following closely behind him, he is being hunted, Mun can feel it.
“A human and a wooden creature!” A wolf calls out. Mun thinks ”What the hell?” How can wolves talk, is this normal, can they be reasoned with? All these thoughts start flowing into his brain as he runs through the forest.
Maybe just maybe, Mun gets a strange idea.
“Can you guys understand me!!??” Mun yells, without looking back, although he doesn’t realize it, he had just howled like maniac. Aura only stares at him with wide open eyes, the thought starts to from inside her head “can Mr mimic speak every language?” Yes Mun can speak every language in current existence, This is a natural ability that is given to all God representatives, but the ability to speak to animals is not one. This ability does not derive from any god but rather from Mun being a Mimic.
Wolves speak through the soul, so do some monsters, one of those being Mimics. Even though Mun needed to eat the Dolrum to speak, the truth of it is that he only needed to know how it feels to have a throat. That is why Mun could condense his body; In short Mimics use magic to create some abilities, the voice is one of those things.
“It can speak!?” another wolf cries. Mun doesn’t know how many wolves are chasing after him, making it difficult for him to assess the danger he is in so, he keeps running. But at this moment he knows that the wolves might catch him, the only edible person here is!!
“Aura, Run!!” Mun yells as he tosses her several feet forward, to keep her from any danger. In the same moment as he tosses her, he turns around to face the wolves.
“after the girl!!” three wolves appear in front of Mun, one is level 10 another level 14 and the last level 16. These wolves are much larger than the first wolf. Without thinking Mun uses his skill for the first time.
“Skewer!!” The second he calls out the skill, he can feel a bit of his energy drain from himself, in the next second his left arm turns into 2 tendrils. both target the wolf on the furthest left. The wolf makes a pained howl, collapsing to the ground, covered in its own blood. The other two wolves without paying it much mind continue their mission and hunt Aura. The wolves would ordinarily go back, but the attack is too strong for them, going back for their friend is a death wish, if they can get the girl, they can easily outrun the wooden man. These two wolves thought about this in an instant and continued forward.
Mun, using his skill, realizes the usefulness of the thing called skills. The moment he used the skill his body moved by itself, Mun didn’t have to put any thought into it, his body did it all itself. That means that.
“Skewer!!” Mun yells out, turning around to face the two wolves; his left arm transforms just like before but this time only one tendril flies out going after the center wolf, this is what Mun is expecting. Skills are automatic and because they are automatic he is free to move the rest of his body. Mun transforms his right arm into a sharp tendril and flies it to the far right wolf.
“This!!” the center wolf howls, how could he expect such a thing to happen, the center wolf is skewered like the first wolf and collapses to the ground in pain. The far right wolf manages to dodge Muns tendril, for a brief moment the wolf could feel excited from dodging an attack his colleagues could not; this only lasts a short moment once Mun tangles its tendril around the wolf, who is at the moment in the air. The wolf trips and drops the ground.
Just as mun is about to use skewer to down the last wolf, the wolf he attacked first lunges at him. Mun loses 100 health right of the bat. Immediately Mun understands the danger he is in, Even Lanards attack didn’t do this kind of damage. No it’s a surprise attack, Mun composes himself. Even so the wolves attack is certainly great. Mun pierces the wolf by transforming a part of his side into a tendril and sends it towards the wolf. The wolf, just like Mun, is caught by surprise and suffers even more damage than before. The wolf collapses to the ground, still barely breathing.
Mun instinctually feels that the wolf he failed to attack, is about ready to lung just like his comrade. Mun looks back to the wolf, that was downed only moments ago, and finds a large white wolf, mid lunge, heading towards Mun, sharp teeth bared and claws ready to pierce into Mun’s wooden body; just The wolf reaches, the wolf disappears.
Mun looks around, confused, only to find that the wolf that hit him, when he first encountered the wolves, hit the far right wolf. “Wo, what the hell is going on!!” Mun yelled out confused. The wolf he first met, now lay completely red in its own blood.
“Let the girl go, it is to much trouble to deal with her guardian right now.” Just as Mun yelled, a large black wolf appeared behind some trees. The wolf is almost twice the size of the wolves he has been fighting; its fur showing off an aura of regality. Instantly Mun knows that this is the pack leader.
He looks to the bloodied wolf, it struggles to get up, trembling from the loss of blood; it stands for a couple of seconds then collapses to the ground, but then stand back up, now steadier.
“Father!!” The bloodied wolf howls; despite his bloodied appearance, the wolf still managed to walk just as gracefully as his father.
“I will not run from this fight!! Go ahead and kill your pathetic son!” The wolf passionately howled.
“I will beat you into submission and make sure you don’t ever defy me!!” The large black wolf howled back. The other wolves began to make a circle around the two wolves.
