Chapter 13 - Mr. Bird
Yue sat in a forest clearing her mana fluctuating as she focused. Over seven years past since she had last seen her brother and she was now ten years old with the magic test looming. The magic tester could appear any day whether today or a few months but Yue knew her time was running out fast. Yue had plenty of ideas as to hide her magic but ideas are just ideas if you can’t get them to work! Well, that was not strictly true Yue had been able to figure out one way that worked when she was eight. She had used darkness mana to surround her own mana and focused on hiding her mana. It had worked, but came with two draw backs. One, it left her looking as if she had no mana which would make her father think she could not practice enchantments and some magical alchemy. Two, was the fact that it took a lot of darkness mana and if the mage tester looked personally at her mana he would notice without a doubt a huge amount of darkness mana being used.
So now Yue was once again trying out an idea for hiding mana, she had thought of it a long time ago however she had been unable to exact enough control in order to succeed. The thought was that she would pull all her mana inward, compressing it into a small sphere with an unnoticeable amount of darkness mana covering it. Then Yue would let just enough mana escape her sphere that it looks like she can use magic but at a normal level for a ten year old beginner. With this in mind Yue was focusing on forcing all her mana to do just that.
Yue’s body was filled with slick sweat as she slowly mana by mana pushed them together. Yue had about two-thirds of her mana contained when she realized that she was reaching her limit. If she pushed anymore at this time she could pass out, with a groan of exhaustion Yue paused her process of pushing and used some of the third left mana to wrap her marble sized mana sphere in darkness mana, not only hiding it but also acting as a cage to keep it there. Yue collapsed on her back but rather then the ground Yue landed on Ink’s fur.
In the five years Yue had him Ink had grown into his adult size. About the size of a mountain lion, Ink was now more than just a cute puppy. After he had grown so large the village decided he was too dangerous to live in the village which meant his new home was the forest nearby. In fact it was because of this that Ink decided on staying his black color, by being black he was able to hunt easier in the forest shadows and sometimes at night Ink would sneak in through Yue’s window to spend the night. Of course as a Ying Yang beast Ink wasn’t restrained to his color, since he had become an adult Yue had seen him turn white once he just preferred black and it was harder to change now that he was full grown.
Turning to hug her big dangerous Ink, Yue exclaimed happily, “I did it! Ink I hid my magic overload. I can be a crafter!” Yue jumped up and stretched her arms to the sky, “I DID IT!” Her face was looking to the sky with a smile until she noticed the sun’s position, it was dinner time. Yue immediately started to run toward the village shouting back to Ink, “I have to go, be safe.” Ink didn’t bother lifting his head, Yue seemed to always loose track of time when focused on something, causing sudden goodbyes to be common.

Yue was just reaching her home when she saw ‘him’. Her arch nemesis Mr. Bird. The big black bird appeared a year and a half ago and quickly became Yue’s enemy. It all started when Yue saw a beautiful shiny stone on her way home from Nik’s house. Yue was about to pick it up when Mr. Bird swooped in a picked it up at the same moment. Both Yue and the bird had their grip on the stone as lighting cracked between their eyes. Yue was stronger and she should have won but just as she was about to claim the prize her mother opened the door Yue was squatting in front of knocking her down as she watched Mr. Bird fly away with a laughing caw caw. But the feud didn’t end there, since that day Mr. Bird always seemed to be there when Yue came home with a shiny stone in his beak. One day Yue couldn’t take it anymore and chucked a pebble at Mr. Bird. But he was smart and was expecting it, he dodged the pebble flew over Yue and dropped a white smelly ‘gift’ on Yue’s head. Since then Yue and Mr. Bird dueled each day, sometimes Yue would succeed in hitting Mr. Bird other times Mr. Bird would hit Yue with something ‘personal’ and far worse then a pebble.
Yue glared at her nemesis a pebble in hand, “You won’t be the victor today Mr. Bird!”
“Caw! Caw!” Mr. Bird threatened.
Yue dodged to the side as Mr. Bird darted at her, narrowly missing his shiny stone holding beak. Yue chucked the pebble at his back but he did a quick loop causing the pebble to harmlessly rattle on the road. Yue paled as Mr. Bird flew over head reading his bomb of doom. Not! Yue was prepared opening her left hand’s fist Yue showed Mr. Bird her back up stone then chucked it before he could bomb her. But at lass Yue was too slow just as Mr. Bird was hit with a pebble to the stomach Yue was bombed in the forehead. Both bird and girl fell to the ground but a sound made them both shoot up again. In-between them the shiny stone had fallen, Mr. Bird had dropped it when hit. Both bird and girl raced to the stone, who was going to get it first. Yue snatched it in her grip, she had won!
“Yue! Its dinner time.” Yue’s mother looked outside the door, “That’s strange I was sure that I heard her out here?” Grace shut the door confused as an odd cheerful caw raced away, if one looked closely they might see a shiny stone in the bird’s beak. And if you looked to the ground you might notice a ten year old girl on her hands and knees behind a door tears down her face for her hundreds something loss.
