The Legend of the Fake Hero
Vol 3: Ch 7 - Big Fish in a Big Pond

Vol 3: Ch 7 - Big Fish in a Big Pond

Students occasionally entered the room as Marty sat in the seat he had claimed last week.  Some time had passed since the incident with M at SUEMA. More information regarding Hydra had come up since the incident, which meant it would only be a short time before operations against them would begin.

“It’s time to start now,” Professor Little said as he entered. “I was expecting a couple more new faces, but I guess we will start without them.” He continued before the door opened again. “Oh?  Perfect timing. Come on in and introduce yourselves.”

At his words, four familiar young ladies walked in.  The room went silent, and Marty detected feelings of speechlessness, jealousy, surprise, and, unfortunately, lust.  The latter came mostly from the three perverts who all stood up in anticipation.

“Go ahead and introduce yourselves.” Little instructed them.

“I’m Morgan Le Fay,” She said with a slight bow.

“My name is Caelia a Lincoln,” She said with a hint of embarrassment.

“Cali Yggdrasildotter,” She said flatly.

“I’m Shiro Ai- Aib-!” She exuberantly said as she stumbled over her words and raised her hand.

“Aibyōka.”

“That,” Shiro replied as she pointed to Cali cutely as many small laughs were heard.

“A group of cuties, nice.” One of the delinquents said with a whistle.

“I’d be careful,” Carl interjected with a smile. “They all probably have an Ability Ranking of B.”

Thanks to Carl’s statement, the girls were assaulted with looks of disbelief, questions, and skepticism.  However, this statement seemed to have not affected the three perverts, who most likely did not hear him as they were all enchanted with the girls.  Surprisingly, Joe, the one into 2-D girls, was the first to say something.

“Shiro-tan,”

[Tan?]  Marty couldn’t help but think with slight disgust.

“Can you say ‘nya’ and do this with your hand?” He asked her as he made a gesture similar to a cat pawing.

She gave him a confused look as she cutely tilted her head. “Nya,” she awkwardly said as she made the motion which added to its cuteness.

It made the heart of many in the room, including Marty’s, skip a beat.  Joe couldn’t take it. At a speed which denied his physical appearance, he made his way toward Shiro before many could react.  Thankfully, Cali quickly moved between Shiro and Joe to prevent the imminent assault.

“I thought he was only into 2-D girls?” Marty asked Bentley as he noticed Harry had disappeared without his knowledge, which put him on even higher alert.

“He is,” Bentley responded absentmindedly. “I think the fact that a loli catgirl appeared in front of him sent him over the edge.”

Before Marty could even retort to that, Joe began to move again.

“Don’t worry,” he said in a tone and smile that had a hint of perversion as he grabbed Cali’s arm blades. “I’ll play with you too.”

For the first time since Marty had met her, a look of shock and fear came across Cali’s face as she began to look around, unsure of what to do.  Joe is gripped her blades more tightly so she couldn’t escape as he had found that they were completely blunt. Out of surprise, Caelia appeared to be unable to move as Marty was at his wit’s end.  Just before he intervened, a brunette and a golden-haired young lady both moved.

““Knock it off you pervert!”” Morgan and the brunette yelled together as they simultaneously punched Joe in the front and back of his head, respectively.  Marty was surprised and impressed at the apparent parkour the brunette did to get to the front so quickly.

“Joe is so lucky,” Bentley said as he watched the spectacle.

“What kind of weird fetish do you have?” Marty couldn’t help but retort.

The brunette could hear him as she has turned to him and gave him a death glare.  This revealed that her chest was relatively flat, which fit Bentley’s type.

A slight breath of relief came from Caelia as she had been unsure how to act the entire time, but it was short-lived as Harry appeared right next to her.

“Nice to meet you,” he said with an evil gleam in his eye. “My name is-” he continued before he was interrupted by a small fist as it grabbed the front of his shirt.  The brunette, who released a decent amount of Ki and gave him the same death glare she gave Bentley which caused him to freeze completely.

“Professor,” Carl began with a sigh as he made his way up to Joe, who had a dreamy look on his face, probably because he was knocked out. “You need to take more responsibility and keep order in the class,”

“But this is so much fun.” The professor said with a chuckle.

“How irresponsible,” Carl replied with a sigh. “Amanda, go back to your seat. I’ll take it from here.”

“Huh?” She exclaimed as she had only just realized that Carl was right behind her. “Okay, thank you,” She said meekly before she silently made her way back to her seat in a manner that sharply contrasted how she acted earlier.

“Harry, get back to your seat,” Carl said.

“But I was just-”

“Harry,” Marty said loudly and deeply in a tone which surprised even him. “Get back to your seat.”

It seemed the continuous assaults on Harry finally took their toll as he made his way back to his desk.

“I’ll take Joe to the infirmary,” Carl said with a sigh as he picked up Joe by the caller and semi dragged him out of the room.

“You girls can go take seats at desks that do not have a nameplate on them,” Professor Little said as he maintained his smile.

Silently, the girls went and found their seats on the opposite side of Marty and the three perverts and were adjacent or near Amanda, which put his heart at ease.

“Now then, we’re going to have a short lecture before going into free time,” Little said with a smile.

...

A short time later, the lecture finished, and free time had begun.  In the interim, Joe returned with a patched-up nose as Morgan put quite a bit of Ki in her punch.  Given Marty’s constitution, it was tough for him not to listen to the other conversations around him, nor difficult for him to comprehend them all.  Unfortunately, he ended up dragged into the three perverts conversation.

“So Marty,” Harry began. “What are the top three things that you would and wouldn’t want your most hated enemy to say.”

“...  As to what I would want them to say… Any monolog that expresses they’ve won before the real fights even begun, screaming in agonizing pain which is less than they deserve, or nothing as I’ve killed them before they even knew what happened.”

“The first one I understand, but the last two…” Harry said as they all made a complicated expression.

“As to things I wouldn’t want to hear from my enemy… I have four.  A monolog after the main battle revealing that my defeat was even more complete than I realized, I remember, disappear, and finally-” Marty clenched his fist, snapped his fingers, pointed in the shape of a gun, “Bang.”

“Those are kind of different from what I was expecting,” Bentley said as he mulled over what Marty said.

“Why do you ask?”

“If we ever end up in a battle that could make us heroes, we want to make sure not to do anything that would lower our chances and do everything to raise them,” Harry said with a convincing smile.

“So the perverts want to be heroes,” Marty said with a sigh.

“Hey, don’t call us perverts,” Bentley retorted as he expressed his slight offense at the statement. “We prefer the term appreciators of women.”

“Appreciator of woman’s body parts you mean,” Marty replied.

“Forget about that,” Harry began to change the subject. “What do you think the qualities of a hero are?”

This time, Marty took some time to think as he pondered his qualities. “An insatiable appetite, an overwhelming belief in society and its morals, and saving the girl in the end.” He finally replied with a slightly lonely expression.

“Yes, you get that much,” Harry said with a smile as he had not read Marty’s expression.

“I’ve had enough of this conversation,” Marty said as he buried his head in his arms.

“Fine,” Harry replied with a shrug before the three of them went back to their handhelds.

“I’m Amanda, nice to meet you all.” The brunette said to all four of the girls.

“Nice to meet you,” Morgan replied as the other girls nodded.

“Say, is your hair color all-natural?” She asked all of them to which they nodded. “Then, are you all Offworlders?” She asked again as they all nodded. “That’s so cool, what are the worlds you are from like?”

“We’re all from the same world,” Morgan replied. “We refer to our world as Albion.”

“So you all came together?  It must be nice to have someone you know.”

“Yes, it’s certainly been helpful. We’ve been lucky to gain connections with some influential people.”

“Well it’s good you’re adapting so quickly,” She said as she stared at Morgan.

“What is it?” Morgan asked after a short time of awkward silence.

“Nothing,” Amanda said as she realized she had stared at her. “Your hair color is unique, but I feel like I’ve seen someone with it before.  I just can’t put my finger on it. Anyway, who were you guys in your world?”

“I’m a Princess,” Morgan said with a hint of pride.

“Really?” She asked and looked at the other girls who nodded in confirmation. “That’s so cool.” She continued as her eyes began to sparkle. “Do you have any stories of handsome princes who would try to sweep you off your feet?”

“No.  The only handsome man who’s ever swept me off my feet was… Wait!  What are you trying to get me to say!” Morgan exclaimed in embarrassment at the realization of what she was about to admit.

“Did you fall for a commoner?  Or one of the servants in your palace?” She continued to ask as her eyes lit up even more.

“No!” Morgan bluntly said as she had become careful not say anything unnecessary.

“Fine fine, I’ll stop pestering you.  And what about you, Caelia was it?”

“Yes,” Caelia replied. “I was the daughter of the de facto leader of the Demihuman village militia. He also happened to be a prince of another kingdom.”

“So you’re Princess too? Then what about you?”

“What about me?” Caelia asked, unsure of the question.

“Any handsome princes in your life?”

Caelia’s face turned red out of embarrassment. “No,” She replied softly.

“That’s not fun,” Amanda said disappointedly. “Then what’s your type of guy?  Describe him.”

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

“Well… I guess.  Someone with brown hair, decent looks, slightly muscular, blue-green eyes, and a very caring heart.” She replied with a slight smile and appeared as though she had disappeared into her little world.

“That sounds more like a specific person,” Amanda replied with a sly smile.

“… My hus- fiancé.” Caelia replied with a stutter.

All the girls remained silent out of surprise at her admission.  Morgan could detect a slight positive emotional change in Marty, which suggested he could hear them. Morgan’s cheeks began to flush, and Cali was expressionless as ever, but Shiro appeared quite happy.

“You must love your fiancé a lot then,” Amanda said with a smile which caused Caelia further embarrassment, but not enough to stop a nod in confirmation. “Where is he now?”

“He’s around, I’m sure,” Caelia said vaguely.

“That’s good.  It would be bad if you left him in your world.  What about you two?” She said as she turned to address Cali and Shiro.

“I’m Caelia’s little sis and the hero’s apprentice,” Shiro responded with a proud smile.

“I’m the sword and shield of the hero.”

To their responses, Amanda gave Caelia a confused look.

“Shiro and I were raised together, so she ended up being like a little sister to me.  As for the hero, he is a very influential and powerful person in Albion.”

“I see.  Well, unlike you, there’s nothing too special about me.” Amanda said with a smile. “I hope we can all be friends.”

“… That’s fine by me.” Caelia said a little surprised as Morgan nodded her head.

“Cool.  Why don’t we swap contact information.” Amanda said while she pulled out her phone.

“Is that a cell phone?” Caelia asked.

“Yes.  Do you not have one yet?”

“No.  We haven’t been here for too long, and I wouldn’t know how to use it anyway.”

“That’s okay.  I can show you.  Why don’t we all go shopping the next time we have a day off?”

“If you don’t mind our guardian coming with us and are available this Saturday, we can do that,” Cali said.

“Okay, we can do that,” Amanda replied with a smile.

“Just give me your address, and we can come to pick you up.”

“Okay.”

“What are you up to, Amanda?” A new voice asked as they all turned their heads surprised at the sudden intrusion.

“What do you want, Alexander?” She replied, angry about his presence.

“Am I not allowed to see you?” He asked her in a way which reminded Morgan of someone she would rather forget.

“I seem to recall asking you to leave me alone, especially when I’m in class.  Besides, don’t you also have class right now.”

“If you ever reach my level of skill, you can slip out before anyone even notices and be back before anything important happens.”

“Then, by all means, please demonstrate and get out.” She retorted back with a tone of displeasure.

“Don’t worry, I will,” he replied with a chuckle before he turned to Caelia. “But first, I’m going to introduce myself to your new friend here.”

“Professor,” Marty suddenly said as he got the professor’s attention. “You are significantly breaking my confidence in your keeping order in the classroom.”

“I suppose your words would carry some weight.” Little pondered. “Alexander, please leave the room.  You are disrupting the class.”

Alexander gave Marty a condescending look before he turned to leave. “Very well,” *fwish*

In an instant, he moved across the room so fast he was only a blur before he appeared at the door and exited.

“How did he do that?” Morgan asked Amanda.

“Training and growing up in a martial arts family,” She replied in a way which clearly showed she was no longer in the mood to converse.

...

A few hours later, the Combat Class began.  Amanda wanted to vent, so she and Caelia spared together.  Caelia had a staff, and Amanda fought with chains wrapped around her hands.

“Marty, come on let’s fight,” Bentley said.

“Why would I want to do that?” Marty retorted with a sigh.

“So you can get points,” Henry said to join the conversation. “There were a bunch of complaints about how the Ability Ranking isn’t a representation of actual battle ability.  Seeing as you haven’t had any fights yet, you should have 100 points which are the default for a Rank F. You can gain or lose points by winning and losing fights. The amount is dependent upon the number of points the two of you have.  So what do you say? How about you fight both of us, me after him.”

“Don’t do it,” Amanda said as she paused her spar with Caelia. “Both of them currently only have one point because they’ve never won a fight, and they have nothing to lose. They’re hoping to catch you off guard so that they can get some more points.”

“Don’t be such a spoilsport,” Harry said to brush her off. “Come on, Marty, what do you say?”

“Will you leave me alone if I do it once?” Marty asked with a sigh to which they both nodded. “Fine.”

“Okay, I’m first,” Bentley said as he led Marty away from everyone else. “Were having a match over here,” He said to the observation room above.

“Acknowledged.” The voice says over the speaker. “Begin when ready.”

For a couple of seconds, neither of them moved.

“You made the challenge so hurry up and-” Marty began before he gripped and turned his head like he was in pain.

In response to this, Bentley smiled at him and tapped the side of his head. “Something wrong?” He asked Marty smugly.

Marty closed his eyes. “Get out,” He said with authority.  A moment after he says this, Bentley smile faded, and it turned to one of exertion.  Once again, neither of them moved for a short time. Then, Marty opened his eyes and slowly made his way toward Bentley whose nose began to bleed and face contorted in pain. Once Marty reached him, he grabbed Bentley’s collar and looked him in the eye. “Forfeit.”

“I forfeit,” Bentley weakly said before Marty released him. “I didn’t know you have Projected Consciousness too.”

“I have what?”

“You can extend your consciousness outside of your mind to interact with other minds.  Some people have strong minds and can resist, but you countered, which means you have it too. It’s one of the default ESPER Abilities.”

“How is it easily obtainable?”

“If you have a near-death experience or someone uses it against you, there’s a chance you can gain it.  I got it after I was beaten half to death after peaking into a lady’s changing room.”

[I can’t believe he just admitted that.]  Marty thought baffled. “I did have a near-death out of body experience a few years back.”

“You’re a Pre-Convergence SUPER and an Abductee?  Some people get all the luck.”

“Pre-Convergence SUPER?”

“Yeah, they have been coming out of the woodworks for a while now.  There were various societies in secret with people who had extraordinary abilities. It’s where all the legends of pyromancy, witches, and the like.”

“Enough of the chatter,” Harry interjected. “It’s my turn now.”

“Fine.  Whenever you’re ready.” Marty replied as they both took their places.

“I bet you didn’t see this coming,” Harry said with a smile as the air around him began to ripple until he disappeared completely.

“No, I wasn’t expecting it,” Marty replied without a change of expression as he pulled out his sunglasses and put them on. “Given that you are a Rank F and your ability can hide your clothes, I imagine that it effectively bends the light around you which would create a blurring effect if you were moving.  I suspect your normal tactics involve trying to get your opponent to turn around away from you so you can sneak up from behind them when, in fact, you haven’t moved at all.”

Even though he said this, he could still ‘see’ Harry, so he walked up and grabbed him. “Forfeit.”

Harry reappeared in front of him, raised his hand, and promptly forfeited.

“So expectedly anticlimactic,” Amanda said with a sigh as a slow clap was heard.

“Excellent Marty,” Alexander said sarcastically.  He had remained unnoticed and startled many people as he appeared near Marty.  Marty walked right past him.

“This is the third time you’ve irked me today.” Alexander continues as he turned, clearly unhappy.

“It’s not my fault you are so easily agitated.” Marty retorted which only furthered Alexander’s anger.

“How about you fight someone who has skill.”

“I’ll consider it.  Let me know when you find someone.” Marty replied as an apparent taunt.

“You cocky bastard.  Let me knock you down a peg.” Alexander replied before he disappeared and reappeared in front of Marty.  In a single movement, he slashed his Ki Blade down and severed Marty’s left arm. The room froze as blood spilled to the ground.  An angry expression came over Shiro, Caelia, and Morgan’s faces, and they prepared to charge but stopped when they noticed what had happened.

“How do you like that?” Alexander asked with a smug look. “You just so easily lost your-” *gah* He coughed as traces of blood flew from his mouth. “What…  What did you do?” He angrily asked as he had only just discovered that Marty’s fist was connected to his chest, and his Ki no longer flowed. “You bastard!” He shouted out of rage as he threw a punch.  By a hair’s breadth, Marty dodged as he threw a cross-counter of his own. Suddenly, a blur fast enough to create a substantial breeze shot toward the two of them followed by an impact. A third figure who had appeared beside the two of them strained to hold back Marty’s fist.

“What part of this strength is Rank F?” The new figure asked under his breath with a small grin while he held Marty’s fist.

After a long second, Marty removed himself. “Hurry up and fix my arm,” He shouted up to the observation deck.  A second later, his dismembered arm and the place where it was cut lit up before the arm disappeared and reappeared attached to him again.  He moved and stretched to test it. “I’d rather not experience that again,” He said under his breath.

“Hey, you bastard,” Alexander began to yell at Marty in a range. “I’m not done with-”

“Yes, you are.” The figure interrupted.

“And you’ve wondered why we had little interest in you.” A new feminine voice spoke out condescendingly from next to Morgan.  With a start, Morgan turned to see a long-haired beautiful blonde young lady who appeared to sit in the air. What she sat on was a block of Ki she had created.

“It is interesting that I could not see this outcome.” A new male voice rang out from Morgan’s other side.  It came from a young man with a buzz cut and bronze skin, which was contrasted by his white sports clothes. His comment was strange as his eyes remained closed.

“Get out of my way,” Alexander said to the figure. “I don’t care if you’re The Traveler.  I could beat-” *Smack*

The Ki heavy fist of The Traveler struck across Alexander’s face and sent him across the field, much to the shock of everyone.

“That’s no way to treat someone who just did you a favor,” The Traveler said with a hint of coldness.

“You bastard,” Alexander said after he coughed up blood.

“Don’t blame me for your lack of knowing your limits or opponent’s abilities.” The Traveler continued before he turned to look at Marty.

“So, what are Hammon The Traveler, Helen The Daughter of Lightning, and Indrajit The Meditator doing here?” Marty asked as he acknowledged them.

“To check on you, colleague.  You are the first person to be admitted into SUEMA as soon as you got back before you were even analyzed.  Given how you already know who we are, your reputation suits you.” Hammon replied with a smile.

“Surely The Big Three of the Eastern US do not need to visit just to see me.”

“We were already in the area, and you’ve piqued my curiosity.  I look forward to working with you.” Hammon said with an extended hand.

“… I’m only a reserve so don’t expect much.” Marty said with some hesitation before he accepted the handshake.

“He doesn’t seem like much,” Helen said as she gave him a look-over.

“Don’t be deceived,” Indrajit said with his eyes still closed. “His potency lies in his intelligence, which most likely far exceeds all of ours combined, and there are things that not even my eye can tell about him.  He is quite the enigma.”

“Well, that’s about everything,” Hammon said with a smile.

“Hiiii!” Helen exclaimed as she began to moan.  It was then that everyone noticed that the air around her shimmered and her enormous breasts moved unnaturally. “What the!!!” She exclaimed just before a massive electrical surge came from her.  The amount of electricity she emitted was immense and made everyone’s hair stand on end. After it had dissipated, the only thing that could be seen was a charred black male figure, the remains of Harry.

“Worth it.” He barely managed to get out before he collapsed backward as smoke rose from his body while the light of the magic enveloped him.

“You get what you deserve for treating a lady like that,” Marty said with his hand on his face as Helen covered herself out of embarrassment.

[You’re one to talk, pervert.] Morgan couldn’t help but think as she noticed movement behind Martel. “Look out!” She barely managed to get out as she saw Alexander had rushed up behind Marty to attack him.

In the next instant, Indrajit moved between them as what felt like an entire ocean had fallen.  It was a tremendous amount of Ki, more so than even Fafnir had. His forehead began to glow as a faint image of a giant humanoid with multiple faces, and multiple arms appeared behind him.  For an instant, time seemed to have slowed before one of the arms appeared to move to strike Alexander before everything vanished. Alexander’s was once again is sent flying.

“You’re quicker on your feet than you seem,” Hammon said in a different direction than where Alexander was sent flying.  It is only then that everyone noticed that Marty was about 100 feet from where he was previously; his posture was tense, and his eyes were serious as sweet could be seen on his face.  This stemmed from two sources. The first was the previously large amount of Ki. The second was the execution of a technique he had prepared in advance. His brain was continuously prepared to cast Dimension Door to automatically be used when he felt that his life was threatened, which took a lot of processing and emotional power.

“Forgive me,” Indrajit said with his eyes still closed. “I could not stem my curiosity.  Though I made sure to make my attack obvious, you still noticed it faster than I expected and evaded in a way in which even my eye could not see.”

“A subconscious response to death.  Thanks for doing that, now I can’t use my trump card for a while.” Marty said with a sigh as he began to approach them tentatively.

“It’s not too surprising,” Hammon said. “A majority of those who are Ranked F are simply weaklings who have been to weak worlds.  However, there are the rare few who do not want to be noticed and have such mastery of their abilities that it is easy for them to appear weaker than they are.”

“I have no idea which talking about, I assure you,” Marty replied blankly.

“... I suppose not.  With that, I guess we shall take our leave. I’ll be seeing you in the future, Marty.” Hammon said with a wave as he begins to walk off.

“I hope not; it’s too much of a bother.”

“Yes, perhaps that’s best for everyone,” Hammon replied with a chuckle as he motioned the other two to follow him.

“They were so soft,” Harry said on the ground as he made obscene motions with his hands before he got shocked again.  Regardless of her intentions, he seemed to have enjoyed it that time.

As they left, Morgan approached Marty as he put on his sunglasses, got out his cigar, and lit it. “Are you okay?” Morgan couldn’t help but ask him even though her words were a little shaky from what she had just witnessed.

“I’m okay,” He replied with a slightly sarcastic smile. “I just witnessed a human generate more electricity than a lightning bolt over a relatively long period.  Then I felt over twice as much Ki come from a human body then it should be capable of extruding without increasing the size of his Ki Flame.”

“You could quantify that?” Morgan asked him in disbelief.  He nodded, and it was only then that she realized that he slightly shook.  If she could see his eyes, she would see that they were fully draconified. Aside from Cali, she was probably the only person that could tell and feel his fear, frustration, and anger.  But, the emotion that most prevailed from him that she could sense was excitement.

“How are you feeling?” She couldn’t help but ask even though she knew full well that he knew she could feel his emotions.

“At that moment, I thought it was going to die.  If I hadn’t set that automatic evasion program in my head, I would’ve been destroyed and I do not wish to experience death yet again.”

“Is that all?”

“No,” He said with a small smile which worried her. “I can’t deny that I’m a little excited to find that I’m a big fish in a big pond.”

End of Day -129
