The Last Crumb Cake
Chapter 14 : Gregory

Chapter 14 : Gregory

Zach's class mate, Gregory was always jealous of him because his parents always dressed him nice and he didn't have to eat the food from the cafeteria unlike he and the other kids. Gregory hated the shriveled and shrunken franks that the school served. And the sauerkraut that was plopped on the side.

Only time Zach ate lunch was when pizza was served. Everyone loves pizza and how can you mess pizza up. Gregory's family didn't have quite as much money as Zach's. When visiting Zach's place he marveled at all the toys he had and the leftover food.

When Gregory spent the night, he could eat all the food he wanted. There were no restrictions. Z and Anastasia knew that he didn't have enough food at home. Since Z, was always on the road, he gave Anastasia his blessing to help Gregory.

When returning to school, Gregory told all the kids what Zach had at home and the wonderful experiences he had. Zach thought he could trust Gregory so he shared secrets and the girls he liked in class.

He stopped telling his secrets, when girls started coming up to him and saying, 'You like me, I don't like you, I like someone else".

Then there would be people naming things that he owned. After this, Zach would tell Gregory to stop telling all his secrets. He began limiting the things he told Gregory. After, he told his parents what was going on, they began to invite Gregory over less often.

He felt the coldness that Z and Anastasia began exhibiting towards him and he felt some kind of way. Then, he slowly stopped coming by. Things began getting awkward. And Anastasia began monitoring his trips to the refrigerator and cabinet and how much he ate during dinner.

Before she would let the boys serve themselves, then she began serving the food. And Anastasia wouldn't fill up Gregory's plate like her son's.

And the only food group she would give him more of than her son were beans and vegetables. Gregory always had to ask for more meat and pasta.

All these things that he went through stayed with him. Even though, they spoke to each other at school, their relationship was never the same.

Zach shared some of his sweets with him. And introduced Gregory to Brendan's Crumb Cake. This wasn't good enough for Gregory, he wanted things to go back to the way they were. His stomach was growling more, but, he couldn't bring himself to go back to Zach's house. Even Anastasia stopped calling him Greg. She called him by his full name. Something that he never liked because every time he got in trouble, his father would call him by his birth name.

Gregory didn't care for his father, Sammy because he was hard to please. He always had him involved in chores when he returned from Zach's house. He did this so, Zach could and would stay out of trouble. And Sammy would have him perform exercises to work off the food that he ate at Zach's house. His father didn't think that he got a balanced diet at their house. Greg would always ask for sweets. Never any real food when he returned home. Sammy felt that Gregory should go out and work if he wants to eat certain foods and not depend on he and his wife Angela.

Sammy never returned to the work field because he was continually facing racism and hostility by bosses and employees. Each day, he would tell his wife and son about a hustle that he got involved in whether it was t-shirt printing, selling books on the street or flyer distribution. Angela didn't openly complain about Sammy's path, but she didn't like the unpredictability and inconsistency of money and hours. She always remembers and reminds Sammy of when they were younger and he described to big goals and visions. Now, he just accepted anything that came to him whether he liked it or not. Sammy's focus was and is money. He feels ashamed that he wasn't able to provide the life that he envisioned.

And each day, he hopes that she never brings it up because it would tear him down. Gregory stopped believing in his father and didn't believe anything he said to him because he's known to break promises. Brendan is one of the few people that has kept his word which is why he decided to stay on board with him. Who could beat eating crumb cakes? Trying different flavors. And Brendan wasn't rude or disrespectful and never changed the way he treated him. Gregory's looking at landing a full time job at Brendan's Crumb Cake. He doesn't like working part time hours and now he's not getting paid. Gregory love's the crumb cakes, but he knows once he graduates from school, he's going to need money for rent and bills.

He can stuff his home with crumb cakes, but the landlord is going to want payment for his residence. Gregory has to pay a light bill and a electric bill. All the things that his father takes care of now. He knows that his parents don't have the means to support two households, so he'll have to hustle. Ask Brendan about a Co - Ceo position, so he can live in a villa and not an apartment. CEOS and Founders make the most money. He's lived in an apartment his entire life. Now, he wants a beachfront resort and women to feed him crumb cakes and pour almond milk in a gold goblet. A smile develops on his face because he feels blessed that he has a job opportunity once he finishes high school. Or so he thinks. Now, Zach, Z and Anastasia is going to want to visit him since, he's going to make more money than all of them. He'll offer them scant meats and cheeses and plenty of vegetables. Repay them for the way they treated him. Gregory can't wait until graduation.
