Chapter 10 : Father and Son

Chapter 10 : Father and Son

"Who are you and yes the lemon flavor sucks" writes a cautious Zach.

Anastasia drops by Zach's room and criticizes her son's anti-social behavior, you've been on that thing for an hour, what's up with you, you can't talk, how's that crumb cake going?" she asks sarcastically.

"It's going well, I started up a site, I'm watching videos, I'm going into business for myself, Brendan can't touch me", says Zach rolling his eyes at his mother.

"How are you going to afford the ingredients, who's gonna buy it and I don't want you making a mess in my kitchen," says his mother.

"Don't you want to see me make it, I thought you would front me the money."

"What do you know about fronting money, finish school then think about going into business, I don't want you to be too tired to go to school, entrepreneurs spend the whole day working on their business, that much I do know."

"I can do both. I'm young and I have the energy. I'm filling in for a market that's unavailable right now."

"Boy, school is more important than making money, this is stuff or should I day tools that you'll use for the rest of your life and your father isn't going to side with you on this, wait till he gets home. He should be home soon in like 15 minutes. I know he'll be tired, he's been on the road for 3 weeks."

They both hear the key unlock the door. She races to greet him with a hug and kiss.

"How you doing Baby, anything to eat?" asks Zach's father yawning and walking slowly to the kitchen inspecting the stove and refrigerator for food.

He finds pots and pans. Zach's father takes the lid off and uncovers rice, string beans and potatoes.

"Before you start eating, Zach wants to go into business for himself."

"Great, he can contribute to the household and learn that all this stuff I get him costs money, he doesn't feel it yet. When you make your own money, you take inventory of every dollar, it's a different feeling, a much different feeling."

He strolls to the backroom. Zach's going back and forth with the forum member.

"Call me Dwight, have you thought about coming out with your own lemon cake and use real lemons not the artificial flavor that Brendan uses, that's why it's trash says Dwight.

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Ahem", says Zach's father announcing his presence.

Zach snaps to attention, "oh Dad what's up," he says.

"My main man, I love you so much, I missed you when I was on the road, driving making money for the family, you're my favorite son."

"I'm your only son."

"Going into business for yourself, that woke me up, when your mother told me, it shows self-reliance and dependability and I'm all for it. Don't let it affect your school work, you starting tonight?"

"I already started, forum up and running and I've been watching crumb cake making videos."

"Culinary arts??"

"Yes".

"Go to school, study, there's no money in that, don't do it, you're not wasting time and money on that and knowing you, you'll get bored and quit within a week. My money's not going into that. I'm starting to get tired. I thought it was something like bond trader, owning real estate, a gas station or something like that, I'm not staying up to hear the rest of this story because only thing I'm going to do is get angry and upset. Maybe, I need to cut back my hours and routes because you're choosing wacked out things to invest your time in. How much money you plan to invest in this?"

"I saw an opportunity Dad. And I took a risk. Didn't you take a risk when you met Mom, you didn't know that you would get married, you took a risk with your job, you took a risk having children."

"I knew what I was getting into. Everything was a part of the goals I set in life. I didn't have the exact timetable, but I knew what I wanted, So, in hindsight it was a calculated risk."

"So it was a risk?"

"Right now, isn't a good time to get into semantics. Give it a break. Put it like this, you fund it, since it's your idea and not me or your mother's, so you better start grinding and hitting the pay dirt, you can't be lazy now and we know you have your lazy moments, you want everything handed to you, this definitely won't be and why crumb cakes, your mother never made them".

"One day, I tried them at the store, I loved them and I told the owner that he needed to bring them back. He didn't listen, so I took it upon myself to come out with my own."

"How'd they come out?"

"I haven't made them yet. But I know they will come out well not good".

"Well you know you can't steal people's recipes, you'll end up in court, do you have court and lawyer fees?"

"No, I don't".

"Maybe you were the only one who loved them".

"No, that's not true, I started a forum and..."

"How many people are on this forum?"

"I have a few it's still early, I'm talking with---"

"A few, only a few, good night man."

Trying not to feel disheartened, Zach returns to the conversation with Dwight.

"I don't care for lemon, whether its lemon cookies, lemon meringue pie, lemon cake, it doesn't matter, lemon isn't for me Dwight", says Zach.

"You don't like those foods because real lemon isn't being used and they aren't using coconut sugar or brown sugar".

"I don't care what kinda sugar it is, it's still not for me".

"Coconut and brown sugar are healthier than white sugar and tastes better".

"How do you know it's healthier, where do you get your news from?"

"I read."

"Name, me one specific source Dwight, stop hiding".

Dwight stops responding and logs off.
