The Interlude Thief
The First Job... Complete?

The First Job... Complete?

Disheveled and gasping for air, Edward stood amidst the bustling activity of the square. His right hand still aglow with a faint purple light, the ring served as a constant reminder of the extraordinary events that had unfolded. With a mixture of trepidation and determination settling within him, he surveyed his surroundings.

The trials he had faced had proven his mettle, and he knew that this newfound virtual reality held both wonders and perils beyond his wildest imagination. With renewed resolve, Edward took his first step into the bustling square, where adventurers and merchants intermingled, promising untold adventures. His journey had only just begun, and he vowed to unravel the mysteries hidden within this captivating realm, carrying the weight of the enigmatic ring that had chosen him as its keeper.

As Edward stole a glance at the ring, his heart sank. The eerie transformation spreading through his right hand and halfway up his arm caught his attention. The inner flesh had given way to skeletal decay, an unnatural sight that sent a shiver down his spine. Despite the unsettling appearance, he felt no pain and retained control over his corrupted appendage, though the implications of this transformation were disconcerting.

Quickly concealing the decayed sections within the folds of his cloak, Edward hurried across the square, making his way to F's Pawnery with a mix of urgency and concern. Inside the dimly lit shop, the familiar scent of aged books and polished trinkets greeted him. F, the wise and weathered pawnbroker, stood behind the counter, his eyes gleaming with curiosity as Edward approached.

Without wasting a moment, Edward recounted the events that had unfolded and presented his corrupted arm to F, hoping for some insight and guidance. F's eyes widened at the sight before him, and he wasted no time in grabbing a jeweler's magnifying glass to scrutinize the decayed flesh.

After a careful examination, F's face contorted with surprise and concern. "It's an artifact from Urbs Mortuus, the Dead City," he declared with certainty. "And judging by the nature of the decay, it likely belonged to the high lich that rules there."

Edward's eyes widened in disbelief, a chill running down his spine. The Dead City, a place steeped in darkness and surrounded by ominous legends. He never expected that the ring he had retrieved would be connected to such a malevolent presence.

Pulling down a large map from the wall, F spread it out on a nearby table, revealing sections of the sprawling Endless City. His finger traced the intricate paths, guiding Edward's gaze to a specific location. "See this district here?" F pointed to an area marked as a white barrier on the map. "That's a formidable wall that acts as a barrier, separating the starting districts from the more dangerous ones beyond. Urbs Mortuus lies nearly a dozen districts away, deep within the heart of the city."

Edward studied the map intently, noting the distant location of the Dead City and the challenging path that lay ahead. His eyes then wandered to the map's edges, where sections of the Endless Wilds were depicted. It was a place he had not even considered venturing before, a vast realm outside the bounds of the Endless City itself.

"The city widens as you venture further," F continued, pointing to the expanding regions on the map. "And beyond the boundaries of the city lies the Endless Wilds, a realm uncharted and untamed. Few have dared to venture into its depths, but perhaps you'll find answers and aid there."

Edward's mind buzzed with a mixture of apprehension and excitement. The journey ahead seemed arduous and filled with unknown perils, but the allure of uncovering the truth behind his transformation and the mysteries that awaited him in both Urbs Mortuus and the Endless Wilds was undeniable.

"Now, my dear lad, I see you've taken a liking to that map," F said, his gaze lingering on the folded parchment. "Tell you what, I can let you have it, along with a few coins to aid your journey. But, in return, I'll be needing that ring you were sent to retrieve."

Edward's gaze shifted between the map and the ring still clinging to his skeletal finger. A mix of hope and uncertainty filled his eyes as he considered F's proposition. Slowly, he extended his hand, presenting the ring to F for inspection. The pawnbroker's eyes narrowed, and a slight shake of his head conveyed disappointment.

"Oh, no, my boy," F muttered, disappointment evident in his voice. "This ain't the one I was expecting. The ring I seek is but a simple band of gold, devoid of any grandiosity or enchantment."

Edward's heart sank as he realized his mistake. The ring he had obtained, with its ghastly purple energies and skeletal corruption, was not the desired item. His first quest in this new virtual world had taken an unexpected turn, leaving him with an artifact that held a dangerous power, but not the one F sought.

With a deep breath, Edward withdrew his hand and looked down at the ring, its purple energies pulsating ominously. He knew he had a choice to make. The path ahead was uncertain, and the consequences of his decisions weighed heavily upon him.

F, still wearing his shrewd expression, sighed and leaned back against the counter. "Well, lad, seems like we're in a bit of a pickle now, aren't we? But fret not, for I'm a man of my word. Help me retrieve the right ring, the golden one I need, and the map shall be yours, along with a few coins to aid your journey."

Edward nodded solemnly, his determination unwavering despite the setback. He had come this far, and he would not turn back now. Retrieving the correct ring became his new mission, one that would lead him deeper into the Endless City and perhaps into the treacherous realms of Urbs Mortuus or the Endless Wilds.

As he tucked his arm back into his cloak, he met F's gaze with a newfound resolve. "I'll find the golden ring for you, F. And once I do, our deal will be honored."

F offered a faint smile, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of curiosity and anticipation. "Very well, my boy. May the winds of fortune be at your back. Now, go forth and bring me that golden ring."

With a final nod, Edward turned away from F's Pawnery, his mind set on the challenges that lay ahead. The journey to retrieve the true ring had begun, and with each step, Edward's determination grew stronger, his spirit unyielding in the face of adversity.

Inside the shop, F let out a sharp, coughing laugh as he realized the newest thief of the city had made off with his map. He was going to give it to the lad anyway, but now he'd dock a coin or two from the reward, just to show young Edward who the boss was.
