The Interlude Thief
Mage Academy and Ignusman

Mage Academy and Ignusman

The district's buildings boast a predominantly white and gold aesthetic with accents of rich crimson. Determined, Edward ascends the stairs leading to the mage's academy, only to be met by a sour, pudgy old mage with wisps of white facial hair and cold blue eyes. Their exchange reveals the frustrating truth: Edward cannot enter the academy unless he is apprenticed to a mage, but he cannot become an apprentice without entering the academy. Bureaucratic nonsense ensues, leaving Edward feeling exasperated.

Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Edward stealthily sneaks into the academy through an open window. Inside, he encounters floating orbs that appear to act as sentries. With careful timing, he jumps in and lands softly, quickly hiding beneath a nearby bench as an orb approaches. Footsteps follow, and Edward does his best to blend into the shadows, his vision slowing as he attunes to the lights and shadows, becoming one with the darkness.

Navigating the halls unseen, Edward searches for anything that might aid him. Suddenly, a voice interrupts his thoughts—a kind-looking old mage who seems amused by Edward's current predicament. The mage chastises him playfully, urging him to rise from the ground or perhaps out it, whichever the case may be. Edward explains his situation, recounting the bureaucratic treatment he received at the entrance.

The mage, introducing himself as Gambledorf Ignusman, shakes his head in disapproval. "Ah, that Billy Milligan, always flaunting power he didn't earn. He may not be cruel, but his weak ego is simply annoying, wouldn't you agree?"

Edward nods in agreement, grateful for Gambledorf's understanding. The mage offers his assistance and leads Edward, now back in his solid form, up the stairs to an expansive library that defies the exterior's size. Gambledorf retrieves an alabaster tome written by Nia Argent of the Shining City, a renowned priestess. He suggests that Nia might possess knowledge on healing the rot and freeing the cursed ring.

Presenting the tome to Edward, Gambledorf explains that it may serve as a means to secure a meeting with Nia Argent. Additionally, he gifts Edward a ring adorned with a glowing blue stone, assuring him that it will grant him access to the academy in the future as an apprentice under Gambledorf's wing.

Expressing his gratitude, Edward thanks Gambledorf for his guidance and sets off. He leaves the mage academy and enters the next district, which reveals a dingier atmosphere. Run-down buildings line the streets, and the scent of fish grows stronger with each step into the city. People toil alongside the canals that crisscross the area, creating a distinct working-class ambiance.

With the newfound knowledge in his possession and the promise of potential aid from Nia Argent, Edward presses on, ready to unravel the mysteries of Urbs Mortuus and the ever-expanding world of the Endless City.
