Chapter 31

Nkosi did not lie.

In just a few days he was walking about the school greeting students as normal. As much as Nkosi tried to get Dzidzor back to being his personal student, she refused, focusing more on her studies and learning. However as studious as Dzidzor was, she could not for the life of her catch up with the rest of the class. She begun to spend her entire life in the library trying to absorb all the tests she needed to pass to join others in class next year. As a Level 5 Cusp, she was officially worthy of being in Level 5, however Wagadu had to ensure that she was ready to join the class. If she failed her exams, she would receive special tutoring for the entirety of the next school year. Luckily, she had a full year to catch up, she was free to join any class she wanted however the books were numerous and she couldn’t get help from Nkosi because of the directions of Lisa. She could not also go to any other teacher as she did not know them and the other ones she knew hated her.

It was like living two lives, one spent in the physical and the other in the spiritual. Two types of learning, two lives, two teachers and two experiences, but she had to overcome it all. Lisa said so. To kill something, you had to become it. To save something you had to know how it felt. Sleep was like a difficult lover and her body and soul was exhausted all the time, but she was determined because she knew what was at stake. Saving the world was nothing like she imagined, it was filled with exhaustion and too many lonely nights.

She sat at the library one morning as it rained, wondering how she was going to pull this off and learn everything from books when she felt someone sit beside her. She was surprised, because no one ever offered to sit by her. Maybe the library was full, she looked around, no one was in the library but her and this mystery person.

She looked at the person and almost shot out of her seat.

“Sir Afri”

“Please call me Bright” he said, looking absolutely pleased with himself.

She shifted uncomfortably in her seat. After impersonating this man for weeks, she had not seen him again, she had never even talked to him before and here he was in the flesh, sitting close enough for her to touch.

“After receiving a review from the committee concerning the Haram books I have been supposedly reading, I thought that maybe, I should pay a visit to the one responsible for this occurrence”

“Sir I am so sorry…”

“I did not ask for an apology,” he said rather kindly “I have grown to become one of your biggest fans. Now tell me how you did it?”

Dzidzor thought that he was here to ask her when she would be available to meet the committee next to explain her actions. Perhaps she was in trouble and was about to be sacked from Wagadu.

“Sir please will I have to meet this committee?” Dzidzor blurted out.

“Oh no! I took the fall, there is no need for you to worry” Dzidzor sighed in relief “Now will you tell me how you did it?”

“I just used a shapeshifting agreement”

“Impressive!” Bright exclaimed. “At the time you were what, Level 2?” Dzidzor nodded and he laughed. “No wonder Nkosi is so attached to you”

“What do you mean?”

“The committee has wanted to call you in for questioning for a while now since your arrival. Ever since you rejected your family and the incident with Gloria”

“How did he do it?” Bright let out a smooth jovial laugh.

“I have no idea. Sometimes, even I wonder if the committee even knows” Bright was silent for a while, waiting for Dzidzor to speak but since she didn’t, he continued “How’s catching up going?” Dzidzor looked at the giant book of magical law and shrugged. “I could help you know? As I am a teacher…”

“Nkosi did send you. What did he ask you to do huh? Spy on me?”

“You really have to sit down” Dzidzor did not even realize that she had vacated her seat. She sat down with the little dignity she had left in her “Nkosi did send me,” Bright begun quietly and took her hand “but not as a spy. To actually look after you, to help you with school work so that you would have something less to worry about”

Dzidzor wondered why Nkosi would go out of his way of help her. What had she done to deserve him, and his love and care? She felt tears prickle her eyes. Bright saw this and pulled her in for a hug.

“The allure of a spy is tempting though”

That made her laugh.
