Mike’s POV

Neil did not talk the rest of the ride after what Nikita said to him. I understood what she was going through, but she was being a bitch right now. As if I wasn’t going through the same thing, like I wasn’t a fish under water. I wanted to wait, when we were alone, before I asked who her patron god was, but it seems I couldn’t wait.

“Hey Nikki” She hummed in response. I felt anger rising in my chest, but I pushed it down. This was no time for arguments. “Who came to you?” She hummed again in question. “Like the god, which god came to you?”

I felt the atmosphere in the car shift. I saw Nikki go stiff in the mirror and my dad swerved, going off the road a bit and even Neil turned to look at me. I asked her again but she did not answer.

Dad is here? Are you crazy?

“Dad knows about all this. He was born in it remember?” I refused to patronize her today and I hoped she realized that. She shifted in her seat.

“Mawu”

Damn, Mawu, the Mawu. I wondered how he looked like. Probably regal looking with gold chains about his neck and striking fear into his enemies.

“Female?” my dad asked, his voice shaking a bit.

“How is Mawu a female?” It just wasn’t possible, everyone knows that Mawu is the male Èʋegbe god.

“It’s a common mistake” Neil began softly, still looking out the window “No one knows exactly how people began to say she was male, but it happened around the time the Europeans first came to Africa. Mawu is a twin, her brother is Lisa. The main god, the god of all is normally referred to as Nana Buruku”

“Did she tell you to do something?” Dad asked. She was silent for a while.

“No” Dad sighed in relief, I wanted to ask why but was interrupted “She kept on saying we were gods though. Like we were the same” my dad’s knuckles tightened against the steering wheel “we’re not, right?”

Dad did not answer, he did not even get the slightest chance to because I screamed.

There was a pain in my head, like I was being stabbed over and over again. I vaguely felt Neil shake me asking what the problem is and Nikki and my dad screaming my name. I couldn’t see, everything was pitch black then I saw Ifa, he was translucent. I screamed to him, and he turned and rushed to me.

My head felt light, as though it was filled with lead and the lead was quickly drained away.

The car was no more on the road, it was now in the bush at the side of the road and my companions looked scared, very scared.
