A Sticky Solution

----------------------------------------

I get up with the morning dew still hanging in the air, making it so peaceful. After stretching for my morning exercises, I decide I need to get some logs from the forest to make better things like a tanning rack or maybe some gear. Who knows what I will find, but I need to be careful and go around the wolves that are near the edge of the forest of the clearing. I don’t think that with my limited material weapons and gear I can stand much of a chance against them. Maybe I would if I had a sword or even better, stronger needles. The needles I have are simple, weak wood that you can find from any birch tree.

I pack up some basic stuff like food and my canteen. I really need to find a river or something I can fill it up with. This Canteen holds more water than normal, so I’m wondering if I can copy the same idea to make storage items. Knowing how to make those will be like winning the Super Bowl. I will be able to make rings or bags or other items to hold huge amounts of items.

One of the things I learned from mages and enchanters is that, in order to do huge spells or enchant items with good properties like the ability to steal life energy or mana, a huge amount of mana is required to do anything in magic. Even if you focus your entire class or character to be a mage it still might not be enough, even at a high level. It usually requires a special class or skill.

One of the things I found when I was playing is that some mages learned to make Mana Crystals. They were very useful to hold mana for later use or used to craft special swords to hold mana and say…light on fire. Yes, those swords that usually have the ability to light on fire or say unleash a wind slash, they probably have a Mana Crystals. This is not common knowledge to everyone, even the creations of the crystals were a close guarded secret that not many were privileged to know.

Even Kings and Lords could not force the people that knew these secrets to give it away. They are like an outside force, they don't have to follow the rules because even the weakest ones could have the mana of 5 mages on the same level. That is a scary thing to think if he used a fire ball which he poured enough mana into, the spell could do an unknown amount of damage.

If I can figure out how to make both of those items I can make lots of money and really good gear. Now, the benefit of having no classes is that you do not need to focus on only one aspect of something, like a rogue on hiding or sneak attacks. You can also focus on being a mage or a warrior and be able to get rid of class weak points. This is not always the best choice, a class can also give bonus stats or boost to your special skill right away. These are all things that I will have to try and figure out in the future, for now I need to get to the woods without getting eaten or killed. I will also need to try and carry some decent sized logs back to camp so that I can make some better items.

I start to move towards the woods, watching the foxes and wolves positions so that I don’t get into a fight. I do not need to draw attention to myself or get tired before I even make it to the woods.

I avoid a small group of foxes and reach the first few trees. Releasing a small breath of relief because that was just way to close. I start moving a little more slowly looking around the forest with small amounts of light reaching the ground from the coverage from the tree tops. I duck behind a tree as I see a wolf walk out from behind a tree looking around like it senses me. I know it can't smell me because I am downwind from it, something you learn soon after trying to hunt monsters.

I sneak a look at the wolf only to quickly pull myself back after seeing the wolf start to turn its head towards me. I know that I need to stay still and try not to run or else I will be seen or heard. I keep myself calm and wait for the wolf to move.

After some time I hear the wolf moving away, I slowly peak out again to see the wolf is far off in the distance. I slowly move from behind my hiding spot, looking around carefully. I know wolves are pack animals and often travel in groups. After I look around for a bit, I see that there are no wolves and move onwards.

I continue this process for some time hiding, moving, and looking. I found some logs but none of them are useful. Most of the logs are rotten or termite infested. I move forward a bit more, look around my sides, then run into something tuff.

I look and I was stuck in a spider web. Dammit!

I try to get it off of me but it is tough like rope. Then, I freeze because I remember two things. One is that this can be used as a string to craft gear. Two, spiders make these webs and I don’t want to be caught on the other end of the food chain.

I look around trying to find something to help me get unstuck. Something wet hits my shoulder in the process of getting almost free and I look up to see a 3 foot wide, 2 feet tall spider above me. Noticing immediately that I’m free, I move back and throw a needle out of habit. I hit the spider in the eye and it screeches in surprise as it felt the pain. I move back as the spider tries to attack me its venom. I roll to my right, jump to my feet, and flip backwards as the spider pounces were I was just standing. I throw another needle at the spider and it scrapes along the side of it. The spider moves to spit venom at me before I can move behind a tree. A small amount of venom hits my left arm.

I feel a pain and numbing sensation where the venom hits. Turns out the venom has a small burning and paralyzing effect. I wish this was not the way I found out what it does. I move right, grabbing another needle, then move back to my left to throwing the needle at the spider from behind the tree, hitting it in another one of its eyes.

I move behind another tree. I just can't fight fair against a stronger creature. Looking around the tree, I see the spider is moving more sluggishly and like it is having a bit of trouble seeing where it is. I jump out and aim where one of its legs meet its body. I miss the spot, but I do manage to hurt it a bit. The spider looks towards my direction and spits venom at me. I roll behind another tree barley dodging the venom.

I get up and grab another needle, ready to throw. I decide to start running around the spider, throwing rapidly at its legs. Finally reaching behind a tree to catch my breath I looking at the spider, it’s fallen down from its standing position. Many of my needles missed but a few still managed to hit its legs. I run up quickly and start to stab the spider’s head before it can get back up and do more damage to me. I end up stabbing the spider for who knows how long until I stop and realize that it was already dead. By that time I was dead tired.

I stand up and stagger to a tree, then slide with my back to the tree, feeling my energy leaving me. I feel my eyes fluttering to stay open, but in vain, I fall asleep.

When I wake up I feel pain all around my body. Muscles are hurting that I didn't even know were there. The light fading from the sky, I pick myself up against my body’s protests, walk over to the spider and start to take it apart. I find the venom sack and webbing in its back, then gather whatever else I can before I start to head back to my camp.

Slowly, I make it through the woods trying to keep hidden, but it still felt like I was being watched. However, I never seeing what was looking at me. After some time I reach the edge of the woods and look back. At the edge of the woods I see a bright pair or red eyes looking at me for a second before it disappears from sight. I try looking for the eyes or what it belonged to but I couldn't see anything. The light is fading from the sky, hitting dusk as I go through the field before reaching my camp.

I set everything down that I got, took out a piece of web and looked it over. It is strong like rope yet slightly larger than string. It is still sticky but I know once it dries out it will be more useful. I get started by laying down all the webbing I got from the spider. There is enough to make a good deal of items, but it will not last forever. I will need to find a way to farm those spider webs. I will also need to find some logs to craft better items.

After I am done laying out the web to dry I go and light the fire. Once I am done I start eating some food that I had cooked before, only now do realizing that I am so hungry. I finish my meal and lay back, looking up at the stars that are looking down on me until I fall asleep due to the exhaustion.

I wake up in the morning after my long rest. The webs are almost dry but not quite done. I get up, start the fire, and go hunt some rabbits for a breakfast. I get back, cook my meal, and look at the web as a God sent gift. This will allow me to make equipment now so I won’t be as vulnerable as I have been. Maybe I will try to make better boots first. Though I would like to do all of that I still have many things I need to do. I need to get more fur for crafting, even though I have a good number of rabbit skins I only have one fox pelt. I need to get more and use the rabbit furs as training to get the tailoring skill. I won't work with the fox pelt until I have that skill, so that I do not waste any that I get.

Well…I guess it's time for some skill grinding and hunting.......
