Chapter 6 : Memory Part 1
“Yeah!”
“He got the quest!”
The main road which led to the western gate of the citadel of Serabourg was now crowded with people who were watching the test. The rumor about the test had spread to the entire city. Because of that...not only did players gather, the NPCs from all over the city started to gather in that place as well. As the number of people kept increasing by the minute, the guards who were stationed in the western gate were forced to make a circle formation around the area where Aria and Van were.
After Aria gave Van the quest to help Duke Kanus, Aria turned around and left Van who was still lying down and panting on the ground. She walked towards Rinea and the others who were also inside the circle formation but they were frozen still like a statue.
As Aria got closer Rinea opened her mouth and wanted to ask Aria to explain everything, but before she could say anything, Aria shook her head and said, “… Not here.”
Rinea understood what she meant when she saw Aria turn her head to look around them. Even though the guards had made a circle formation to prevent the onlookers to get close to them, and made it difficult for the onlookers to hear their conversation, Rinea knew that a player with a certain skill like
“… Follow me.”Aria said, and they began walking to the city.
As their group walked on, the guards who made the circle formation before was now making a wall, surrounding them and preventing the onlookers to get too close to their group and made the onlookers move away from the main road that goes to the city.
Rinea couldn’t understand why the guards were escorting them like they were important people. Even the nobles were rarely treated like this by the guards, unless their status was a Duke or a Count.
Aria led her group into the northern residential area where her mansion was located, but right behind them were the curious onlookers from the western gate. As Aria’s group was about to enter the gate to her mansion, the two guards at the gate helped them by teaming up with the other guards who were escorting them. The guards successfully blocked the onlookers from entering the mansion.
“Welcome back, My Lady”, greeted Maria as she bowed.
Aria nodded her head as a reply and said “… Empty room.”
Maria bowed again in understanding and led them into a room on the second floor, it was opposite to the wing where she met with Duke Kanus before. After serving tea and some snacks, Maria was about to excuse herself when Aria asked, “Duke Kanus?”
“Yes, he is still talking with miss Nedia in the other room.”
It was almost dark outside but they hadn’t finish talking yet. Aria thought for a second and said, “… tell them to eat dinner with us. Also, prepare two more seats.”
“Yes, My Lady”, replied Maria as she bowed and excused herself.
Aria then turned her head to look at Rinea and the others who were sitting on the sofa in front of her, their faces were telling her to hurry and explain everything,
Ever since Van showed up, Aria realized that she wouldn’t be able to keep her class a secret for much longer. Sooner or later they would know about her, since she was being treated like an NPC. Also, it seems that not only NPCs are treating her like one of them, the players were also starting to treat her like an NPC too, and Van’s actions was proof to that.
Since Aria spent most of her game time reading books in the Babel Tower, she didn’t have much of a chance to meet or talk with the other players. The only time she talked to the other players was during today in Serabourg but she only spoke to Rinea’s party members. So how did Van know about her? He introduced himself to her as if he had known from the start that she could give him a quest and the only reason she could think of was because of the NPCs.
Aria’s fame made the NPCs tell everyone about how she had single handedly defeated a dragon and that was why the players thought she was special. But it seemed that her main class’s side effect was causing the NPCs to tell the players that she was an NPC, which in effect made the players to start believing and thinking that she was an actual NPC too.
She saw that Rinea and her group was on the verge of explosion and they were about to burst from all the curiosity, Aria decided she had to tell them. She then started from the beginning of her journey and how everything started. No one dared to interrupt her story and they could only sit still in their place. The only thing that was visible and showed what was going inside their brains, were their facial expressions that kept changing as she went on with her story.
“… That’s why I tested him.”, said Aria as she finished her story.
Silence filled the entire room, they were all in shock and didn’t know how to respond to her story. To think that there was such a reason behind all of this. Their shock wasn’t only because they know that her main class is a goddess or that her stats were ridiculously high. But it was also because they still couldn’t understand how a girl, who was the same age as them, could become one of the board members of a large corporation.
“… Questions?”, asked Aria.
Liliana stared at her for awhile before she asked, “… If your race had changed, into that of a god, how can it be that there is no NPC who realized it? ”
NPCs can know someone’s race just by looking at them and would act appropriately depending on their race’s relationship with that person’s race. But Liliana remembered that the guard NPCs who were escorting them before treated Aria as one of the nobles in their Kingdom. If they knew that Aria was a goddess when they saw her, maybe they would have started kneeling in front of her, praying and even worshiping her out of the blue. But why didn’t they do so?
Aria explained that was because there was no NPCs who lived in this realm that had ever seen a god before, so they didn’t know how gods or goddesses were supposed look like. Even the popes, of any church, never saw their gods directly because their gods were only using their shadows to make contact with them… Well, the gods weren’t supposed to be in this realm to begin with anyways.
But there was a way to know if someone was a god due to their divine power. People like Nedia, who could sense magic, was able to sense Aria’s divine power. Divine power wasn’t a rare thing in this realm. Some classes had their own divine power based magic or skill that could be learned by anyone but only if they were in the same class and had passed some tests or condition.
The only thing that was different with Aria’s divine power was her quality and quantity of it. As a goddess, Aria had a ridiculous amount of mana and divinity stat. Only gods who had it could increase the purity of their divine energy and divine energy is the source of all divine power. That was why as long as Aria didn’t use any divine power, no one would realize that she was a goddess. And because her appearance was the same as normal human, the NPCs thought of her as a human too.
Then Refa raised her hand and said, “If you are that powerful then you can easily become the emperor, isn’t that…” she stopped her sentence when she saw Aria shake her head.
Unicorn Corp had announced that the prize to the first player who could unite the entire Versailles Continent and become the emperor was that he/she will receive that month’s entire profit from Unicorn Corp and 5% of the Unicorn Corp’s shares.
Aria understood what Refa wanted to say, but before she could say anything to her.. a whisper with a familiar male voice interrupted her.
It was Byung Jun Yoo voice, the creator of Royal Road. He was using the game master’s whisper system to talk to them which could also be used to talk to any player that the game master wanted to.
“A game master?”, asked Wales who was confused as he read his whisper status window and found out that the one who was contacting them was the game master.
“… Professor? ” Said Aria as she tilted her head.
Aria called him ‘professor’ because Byung was her teacher. She didn’t really know the reason why Byung wanted to teach her. A few years ago when she met him for the first time, he suddenly asked her, “Are you interested in VR World?”. At that time she just heard about the project and only knew its general idea but she didn’t really know the detail of the project and was curious about it. So she answered, “Yes” to his question and on the next day Aria suddenly received a video call from Byung and he began to teach her, she never expected that it would turn out to be a full study of VR world, almost every day Byung would call her and begin to talk about VR world, Byung taught her everything about VR world including its core system which was created by Byung himself and was also the most top secret information of the Unicorn Corp.
Byung first met Aria in a party for the higher ups of Unicorn Corp, at first he was only curious of what kind of girl Erica was because she bought most of the Unicorn stock at that time, the rumor said that she was a genius with the ability of photographic memory. He was really surprised when he saw Aria. He would never forget that face, the face of his most closest childhood friend who was also his only love, the sole reason why he created Royal Road in the first place. After investigating Aria background using Versailles (The A.I), he found out that Aria was the granddaughter and that was why he decided to teach Aria everything about VR world.
Byung was introducing himself to Rinea and the others and then continued
“You are kidding… right?” Said Refa in disbelief.
In one of the business magazine that was released this month, there was an interview with one of the Unicorn Corp higher ups, and he gave the information about Unicorn profit in the first month after the release of Royal Road which had reached over $10 million and was predicted that it would keep increasing in the future. And he said that amount of money was only worth as a pocket money… no normal high school girl had such an insane amount of pocket money that could even buy a small island.
“… Aria.”
“… I know.” Replied Aria.
Yesterday (Real world time) she read the report about that in one of the documents that her mother had given to her.
“…Okay.” Said Aria as she nodded in understanding.
They answered in unison as they nodded “Okay”.
Aria remembered that there was a jewelry box on top of the dresser in her chamber when she took the crown, she didn’t really check what was inside the box before.
After saying that Byung cut off his whisper.
Silence filled the entire room, they were all still in shock after hearing all of that information, five minutes later Wales was the one who broke the silence with a question “What should we do now?”
“… Just like we had planned before, we need to increase our level to finish that mage quest.” Replied Rinea.
“But there are still a lot of people outside.”Said Refa as she looked through the window looking at the crowd of people.
Even though the darkness had covered the sky and it was almost dinner time, the onlookers who had followed them from the western gate were still gathering outside the gate, and as she continued to observe the crowd, she then said “I don’t think they will go anytime soon.“
While sipping her tea Liliana remembered Aria’s conversation with that beautiful red haired maid and said “Didn’t Aria say we can eat dinner before.”
Trying to remember for a moment Rinea then said “Ah you are right… Are you telling us to stay? ” Asked Rinea as she turned her head to look at Aria who was also sipping her tea.
Aria then nodded her head as she put down her tea and said “… Yes.”
“Hm… hey, is that Van? ” Said Refa who was still looking at the crowd.
Outside the gate Van and the warrior who was with him before were talking to the guards.
But before anyone could say anything, a knock on the door made them to turn their head to took at the door.
Knock Knock
“… Come in.”Said Aria
The one who was knocking the door was Maria, she then entered the room and bowed as she said “Dinner is ready.”
Maria led them to the first floor towards a large white colored twin wooden door, the first thing that they notice when Maria opened the door was the nice and delicious smell of food, inside the room they could see a very long decorated dining table with a row of elegant chairs on each side and on top of the table, various kind of luxurious food were lined up and arranged neatly.
As they sat on their chairs, a middle age knight and a beautiful woman wearing a dark green robe entered the room and introduced themselves as Duke Kanus and Nedia. Not too long after they entered, Maria came back into the room to informed Aria that there were two adventurers who were looking for Duke Kanus, of course that two adventurers were Van and the warrior. Aria had expected that the two of them would come to her mansion that was why she ordered Maria to prepare two more seats before, she then told Maria to let them in so they can have dinner with them.
After the dinner Duke Kanus turned his head to look at Van who was sitting on his left “So why are you looking for me?”
Van didn’t answer the Duke but turned his head to look at Aria in question, he thought that Aria had told the Duke the reason why he was looking for him, but Aria just stared back at him without saying anything.
Van then realized that Aria hadn’t told Duke Kanus anything and then he explained it to him why he was looking for him.
“Well, I was actually planning to ask for help from the adventurers… we really need any help that we can get right now, and if Lady Aria recommended you then you must be quite skilled.”
As if to avoid Duke Kanus gaze, Van turned his head, looking at the table as he muttered to himself “No… I am not really that skilled…”
But it still could be heard by Duke Kanus who sat next to him. He frowned looking at Van gloomy face and then asked “What’s wrong? Why are you so gloomy.”
The one who answered Duke Kanus question wasn’t Van, but the warrior who was sitting next to Van..
“He thinks that he isn’t that skilled because he couldn’t land even a single attack on Lady Aria when she tested him.” Said the warrior with a grin on his face.
After the test, Van was always sighing and sometimes muttered to himself, his pride as the highest level players in the west was shattered to pieces when Aria defeated… no, should be said as toying with him like a little kid.
“Boris!”
Boris was one of the strongest player in his guild and also Van’s best friend, he was also acting as Van’s personal bodyguard. Because of the activity of Crescent Moon guild which helped the beginner and also protecting them from the PKs, many PKs hated them and sometimes tried to PK Van who was the leader of Crescent Moon guild.
“Ha ha ha ha ha you shouldn’t think badly of yourself, even I don’t think that I can land a single hit on her.” Said Duke Kanus with a smile on his face to cheer him up.
They chatted for awhile and after that Duke Kanus excused himself because he needed to go back to his office while also taking Van and Boris with him,
Aria then looked at Nedia and asked “… Not going?”
Nedia shook her head and explained “No, I have already helped him a bit by giving a few advice on strategy.”
“… Nothing more? ”Asked Aria with her usual expressionless face.
Nedia smiled at her knowing what she meant by asking her that question and then answered “Don’t worry, I didn’t do anything else.”
An immortal being like Nedia or herself shouldn’t interfere with mortal world too much, because it could destroy the balance of power or even bring chaos into this realm. That’s why Aria refused to help directly on the war and only told Nedia to move the army.
Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
Nedia also didn’t plan on doing such a thing, bullying someone who was weaker than herself wasn’t fun at all, for her, battling with someone who was stronger than her like her battle with Aria was the most fun thing that she had ever felt.
“By the way Aria, what kind of quest did you give to Van?” Asked Wales as he listened to her conversation with Nedia.
Wales had hold himself from asking this question because Van and Boris were eating with them before, but now after they had left he didn’t have to hold it back anymore.
Aria thought for awhile, it was too troublesome to tell them the detail, so she opened her quest status window to share with them the information about the quest she had given to Van.
Aria’s quest status window was a bit different from the usual players, her quest window was divided into two parts, the first was the usual quest status window which was for the quest that she had accepted, and the second was for the quest that she had given to the other players. As she read the information on the second part of the quest status window, she found out that she also could give quests to the NPCs,
Upon receiving the quest information and read its content, Wales shook her head in disbelief while Rinea, Refa, and Liliana looked at her with a strange expression on their face.
Looking at their reaction, Aria then asked “… What?”
“… You are quite cruel you know… did you have a grudge against Van or something? ” Asked Rinea.
Confused, Aria asked again.”… Why?”
Rinea than explained “ Van level is 243, and you gave him a level C quest which was recommended for players with level 300… and the war will happened in a month. There is no way he can level up to level 300 in only a month.”
In Royal Road monsters under level 150 were set to be weak, it was set like that to let the players to get used fighting mobs and they only had a little exp. That’s why it was quite an abnormal thing for Rinea’s group to reach over level 150 in only just 4 months game time by themselves, it was a different thing if they had a guild to help power level them, like most of the guilds did including Van’s guild.
For monsters around level 150-250, they were set to be normal, but there were quite a few types of monsters were set to be quite strong on this level and they had a normal amount of exp.
And almost every types of monsters with level 250 or higher, were set to be strong and had high intelligent the more level they had, but in return they had a lot of exp.
Now Aria understood why they had that strange expression on their face, but Aria shook her head and explained to them that should be the case if Duke Kanus was the one who gave Van the quest, like what he had said before “Well, I was actually planning to ask for help from the adventurers… we really need any help that we can get right now.” and if she didn’t help by ordering Nedia to move the army and herself protecting western border, then yes, the difficulty of the quest would be C. But the condition now had changed when Aria decided to help the Duke, even though the quest window said it was a level C quest, but the actual level of the difficulty should have been reduce to level D++ which was recommended for players with level 250.
“Sigh… you should have said that to Van before. I bet he didn’t know that the difficulty of the quest had been reduced and still in a panic right now.”Said Rinea as she pitied Van.
What Rinea said was right on the mark, the reason why Van was always sighing and muttered to himself wasn’t just because he was toyed by Aria, but also because the content of the quest he received said that it was a level C quest. Ever since he knew that, he had racked his brain searching for a way to increase his level to level 300 in a month, till he felt as if his brain would melt because of too much thinking.

Underworld Realm
A man wearing a black knight armor with a huge black claymore on his back walked towards a castle, as he reached the gate, two dark knights who were guarding the gate saluted the man, but the man just walked pass them without giving them any kind of response as if they were never existed.
He walked through a very long hallway until he arrived at a huge black door, he pushed the door to open it, behind the door a room with a row of blue fire which were floating in the air at each side of the room, at the center back of the room, there was a woman sitting elegantly on a throne, she was a beautiful woman with dark skin wearing a black dress.
The man walked then knelt down in front of the woman, and with a heavy voice the man asked her “Did you call for me?”
“Yes, I want you to investigate something.”
The man tilted his head and said “Only investigate?”
The man was quite confused, she never asked him to investigate something before, usually she asked him to destroy something or kill someone who could become a danger or harm them, the one who was usually do the investigation for her were the other low or mid level demons.
“No, I know what you are thinking, but this time I don’t think they can do it … maybe this is the most difficult task that I have ever given to you.” Said the woman as she looked at the man, assessing his ability.
“Ha ha ha you must be joking. I who is the contractor of Goddess Hel, nothing can be too difficult and cannot be done by me as long as you are with me.’ Declared the man with full of pride.
“Thank you Devon, I really appreciate that, but this time your opponent is not a mortal being.” Said Hel as she smiled at the man.
“… A dragon? ” Asked Devon.
If it was a dragon then it might be difficult for him, not too long ago Hel asked him to retrieve an artifact in its lair, at that time he almost died because of the dragon used its breath to attack him and was forced to summon five high level demons to help him to kill the dragon.
Hel shook her head and stared at Devon for awhile and then said “Worse than a dragon… It’s a goddess.“
Devon’s eyes were opened wide and stared at Hel in disbelief, then he said “Is she insane or what? ”
Devon knew that if a god came to the Mortal world Realm they would lose their divine power which was the same as losing their status as a god, no sane gods would do such a thing.
Hel smiled bitterly at his reaction and replied “She didn’t lose her divine power.”
“… How?” Asked Devon in a shock, but there was a bit of amazement in his voice.
“That’s one of the thing that I want you to investigate.”
Devon took a few deep breath to calm himself and said “… I understand, where can I find her?”
“I don’t know her exact location, but the last time I felt her power was in the western part of the continent.”
“Alright, I will investigate it from there.” Said Devon as he stood up and walked toward the door.
Looking at Devon’s back as he walked, Hel muttered to herself “ I hope she doesn’t kill him…”
She had known Devon since he became her contractor for almost five years now, she understood his personality very well, bad and good.
Devon was very loyal and would never betray her no matter what, she really like and really appreciate that side of him, but his pride and arrogance sometimes… no maybe almost always brought trouble.
Hel remembered the last time she gave him a task to retrieve a relic from one of the dragon lords lair, she told him to only retrieve the relic and not to fight with the dragon lord, but his pride and arrogance thinking that he was the strongest being in the Mortalworld made him to ignore her order and challenged the dragon lord, he almost died and forced to summon 5 high level demons to assist him. Well that wouldn’t be a problem if he just defeated it, but he went as far as to kill the dragon lord, the other dragon lords who knew their friend death were in rage and now he was wanted by the entire dragon race.
“I hope this will become a good lesson for him………maybe I should start looking for his replacement.”

Aria’s Mansion
“How is it? “ Asked Rinea to her sister.
In the morning after the breakfast, Refa went to scout the area around the mansion and had just returned.
Refa shook her head as she sat next to her and answered “Not good, even though their number have decreased but I still can sense quite a lot of them who used
As she sighed Rinea turned her head to look at the others and stopped her gaze at Aria who was now wearing her white dress and asked “What now?“.
It seemed her prediction were right, Aria had thought that there was no way the other players would leave Rinea’s group alone, it was obvious that the other players wanted to get any kind of information from them which could help them to get close to her, that was why if her prediction was right she planned to bring them to Babel Tower.
Before Aria could say anything, a telepathy from Babel interrupted her.
<… Tell me.>
<… I will be there.>
Aria then turned her head to her left, looking at Nedia who was sitting alone on the corner of the room. It seemed she also had been informed about the problem because she was staring at her while wearing an expression that asked her if it was really alright to bring along Rinea’s group with them back to Babel Tower.
Babel Tower wasn’t a place that could be entered easily by anyone, in the past, Goddess of Knowledge had forbade anyone from entering it and placed a very powerful magic which would reject anyone from entering and attacked anyone who forced their way into the tower, even the gods themselves would have a hard time dealing with this magic.
There was only one way to enter the tower safely, that was if Aria or Babel invited them into the tower then they could enter, but wouldn’t be able to read any books which were stored inside it and if they wanted to read the books, they must get Aria permission first.
Nedia was lucky to meet Babel who at that time was preparing a barrier around the tower when she came to the tower for the first time. There was no way she could enter the tower without Babel inviting her to wait for Aria inside the tower, and of course after she became Aria servant, Aria gave her the permission to read the books on the first section of the library (1st – 50th floor).
Aria understood what Nedia was thinking, there was a difference between Babel and Aria invitation, once Aria invited someone to enter the tower then they weren’t only able to enter anytime they want, though it was limited to the first section, but they also could read any books that were stored in there.
Aria then nodded as an approval, then she stood up and walked to a wider space in the room while signaling Rinea’s group to stand up and gathered around her.
They didn’t really know what was going on but followed Aria’s signal and gathered around her.
Nedia walked toward them while muttered some incantation, suddenly a white circle appeared on the floor where they were standing and with a white flash they arrived in a large room filled with tens of thousands shelves of books.
“… Where is this place? ” Asked Wales in astonishment.
Aria didn’t have to answer his question because Babel who greeted her as he floating in the air had answered his question.
“Welcome back My Lady. Ah so you have brought guests with you. Welcome to Babel Tower.”
“Wow, its an Ego book!, it’s my first time seeing one!.” Yelled Rinea as she jumped in excitement.
Ego books were a very rare book that could talk and had their own personalities. Not only they had very high intelligent and magical capabilities, but they also stored many information about the world, rare magics and skills inside them, that was why a lot of people dreamed to have them and searched for them, but none of them had ever found one and at the end they were treated only as a myth.
“Ah yes thank you, my name is Babel, it’s a pleasure to meet you all.”
Babel was the first Ego book that had ever exist in this world, created by the Goddess of Knowledge herself and it became the foundation of the other Ego books that were created by the other races.
Before anyone could say anything anymore, Aria said “… Talk later, problem?
“Yes My Lady, let’s go outside.”
As they walked toward the huge door that led them outside, Babel then explained that at first after the battle between her and Nedia, he felt something was strange but he thought it was just his imagination and didn’t really think much about it. But yesterday after she had left the tower, the strange feeling which he had felt since that day was getting stronger and stronger, and this morning he felt it clearly, something strange was happening outside the tower and he went to check it.
“And what I found was that.” Said Babel as he looked at the sky.
A huge crack had appeared and were covering the sky above Etna Forest, it was like a crack on the glass which kept spreading slowly but surely to the entire glass, making it looked like it would break to pieces if you touched it.
“What the hell is that thing?” Asked Rinea.
The one who answered her question was Nedia “… The dimension is falling apart.”
“Ah so you think so too.” Said Babel in agreement.
Aria then turned her head, looking at both of them as if to ask for an explanation.
Looking at her Babel then started explaining “This is only my theory… when My Lady’s realm and this realm fused, the dimension around the forest started to change, the change itself didn’t pose any real danger but it caused the dimension to become unstable. It won’t become a problem even if we just leave it like that because as time passes the dimension will become stable by itself. But the magic collision between the two of you has made the dimension unstable due to receiving a huge impact, the dimension is starting to fall apart.”
“But why didn’t it start to fall apart after that battle?” Asked Nedia.
“My guess is that because of My Lady’s existence in this tower it suppressed the process to its minimum. But yesterday My Lady left the tower.”
“So the crack began to show up after Aria left the tower…” Muttered Nedia to herself.
“If Aria didn’t leave the tower would the process have stopped?” Asked Wales as he looked at the crack which was getting bigger and bigger, he then continued asking “Why is it still getting bigger even though Aria is here?”
Babel then answered “No, My Lady existence only suppressed the process, and it seems now the damage is already too severe that even My Lady’s existence cannot suppress it anymore. If we don’t stop it, I fear that this realm will no longer exist.”
“Is there a way to fix this?” Asked Liliana.
With an apologetic tone Babel said “I am very sorry, if I still have my power then maybe I can do something to fix the damage, but now I have lost almost all of my power, there is nothing that I can do now…”
“Oh come on now! The world ends just a month (Real time) after I played it! Let’s protest to Unicorn! If they didn’t fix this mess I will sue them! ” Yelled Rinea.
Refa tried to calm her down by saying “Sis! Aria is here you know.”
“Eh ah. Sorry… I forgot you are one of the board members…”
“… It’s fine.”
Aria didn’t really mind her, it was a natural thing for her to say that kind of thing and understood that she didn’t really intend to do such a thing. If the world really got destroyed like this, maybe, no she could guarantee that almost every player who played RR would protest and sue Unicorn Corp for that.
The problem was, even if they really protest and sue Unicorn Corp, there was no way Unicorn could fix this problem. RR wasn’t like a normal MMORPG that could be fully controlled by the game master, this game was an independent game that couldn’t be fully controlled by anyone, even the game master himself only had a very limited control over it.
“… Game master…” Muttered Aria.
Now that you mention game master, didn’t Byung say “Check the jewelry box in your chamber.” before he cut off his whisper. As the game master he must be know that this would happen, so he must be saying there was a way to fix this problem inside her jewelry box.
Aria then turned around and walked toward the door but before she opened it, Rinea called her “Hey Aria, where are you going?”
But Aria didn’t answer her and just walked into the tower, from behind, she could hear Rinea yelled “Hey wait for me!” and her running steps trying to catch up to her.
