The Fallen’s Ballad
A Prize Worth Keeping

A Prize Worth Keeping

As the four arrive in the city of Lastvein, and step out of the carriage two of the riders immediately split off. Typically both Magdalene and Jinn split up and use stealth abilities leaving the two children to have their space. Lastvein while only a quarter of the size compared to the Kingdom's Capital still qualified to be the third largest city in the country. Only an hour ride outside the Bladesinger territory, it was a town known for its free trade market and guilds. The reason Chae was so adamant about going to city was due to a festival centered at the market much to Digaos chagrin. He definitely had a preference to quality over quantity when it came to other people.

"Come on, I heard the games they have here are great this year." She says pulling him by his hand throughout the crowd.

For the next few hours the two had went booth to booth unfortunately only winning a few prizes due to Digaos opting out of most games. Chae had at first yelled at him for not trying out more games or helping her.

"My stats are too high considering most kids don't even have access to stats past one at our ages, with a total stat count of seventeen wouldn't that just be unfair of me to participate?"

She was shocked at his reasoning, usually the boy was proud to show off his abilities, but only when it mattered so it made sense to not contest with children who had no chance against him. What really surprised her was he had just gave an insight into how high his total stats really were. She opened up her stats to take a quick look.

Strength: 1

Agility: 1

Vitality: 1

Perception: 1

Intelligence: 2

Luck: 3

She had talked to Jinn about her stats before, and he praised her for having a total of nine before the age of six. Especially her luck due to that being one of the hardest to increase as well as important for a merchant. Digaos number astounded her with almost twice what she had. This was just another of the many things that made her proud to be close to him. Even as difficult as his personality was, he was reliable. She never felt alone around him as she did when away. Their arranged engagement to her wasn't a thing of romance, she wasn't sure she understood what the was yet anyways and was sure it was the same for him. No, their engagement to her was assurance he would continue to be there for her.

As she looked back up from her status she saw a booth connected to a range along a corner alley, it was a hobbled together archery booth, and behind the booth was a elderly man with torn grimy adventuring gear. With not many people going up to the stand she almost disregarded the booth entirely until she looked over and saw Digaos staring past the old man to a pedestal behind him. On top of the pedestal was a whicker basket, in it was a fist sized oblong ethereal green with deep purple veined jewel. It was strange she knew he wasn't interested in jewelry outside of practicality like his ring, Clothing and fashion yes, but never jewelry. Although seeing him actually look at something with that kind of interest pushed her forwards as she went up to the booth turning towards her companion.

"Come on Digaos!"

He smiles and nods, as they are moving towards the booth he gets a chill up his spine and turns to the alley that runs parallel with him seeing two figures dart left down it. Chae starts to appraise the booth and bows at it, while Digaos peers around focusing all that he can on the shadows looking for his guardian knight. As usual he is unable to find Magdalene in a setting like this. Thankfully he manages to see the blurred figure of Sir Jinn crossing across the roof top of a bar across the courtyard from them.

Perception: 2 > 3

Ignoring the notification he could appreciate later he made eye contact with Sir Jinn who looked perplexed when his eyes caught. Without hesitation he mouth out "Check the alley to our left, two people staring at us moved as soon as I saw them, tell Magdalene to check other darkened places around us to be sure".

In the next moment the blurry figure he gave off became clear as he deactivated his stealth skill and moved at extreme speeds towards the alley. Turning his attention back to the booth in front of him trusting their guards he picked up on the conversation here.

"A Silver per shot, two bullseyes to acquire a prize." He sweeps his arm over the table beside him with all different items up there, a broken dagger with Runic designs, a type of ore that looked like gold but brighter, a few potions with tags below them covering different effects, and a Goblin hand axe. All things an adventurer could have in their bag at anytime. Digaos was under the impression that's what this was, just an older adventurer looking to pick up some extra coin after a dungeon dive that did not go well.

"What about that jewel in the basket there?" Chae asked pointing to the thing that had caught his eyes initially, he smiled inwardly knowing how that wasn't a jewel.

"Ahh good eye young lady, that is a Wyvern's eye, a rare jewel only found on the east continent." A con artist Digaos thought, he wondered what outrageous price the owner would ask for this fake jewel he had.

"To take a shot for that prize it is one gold per shot requiring three bullseyes." He says this like it should be shocking, but whether its Chae's reaction to the price being low for something so beautiful in her opinion, or his smile at how cheap it is for what the item actually was neither gave an expected reaction. Chae then turns to Digaos " I know you said you wouldn't participate, but this isn't a kids game and its priced fair enough to be okay and take it."

He nods while stepping forwards pulling three gold from his pocket "Yes, you are right, I will step up for this one. Just three arrows sir, can we use our own bow?"

The older man confused looking from both children says " Yes, but you can keep your gold until you return with the bow if you'd like?"

So he wasn't a complete con artist not accepting the gold before they returned. Digaos waved the statement off looking towards the Obsidian ring he had on his left pinky. After putting mana into it a dimensional rift opened and he was able to pull out a training bow he had in his storage ring. With his other hand he reached out for the arrows.

"That's fine I have my bow here, I am ready as soon as I get the arrows."

The Booth older started to stammer, but relaxed himself quick and took a new demeanor knowing a child with a Storage ring and gold coins to throw at a game like this would definitely be a noble. He handed over the three arrows slightly bowing to Digaos as he did. Digaos walked up to the first barrier, looking down the range there were two small targets around 100 yards down. Focusing Digaos notched an arrow and while letting out a breath releases it.

*Vssh* *Thhwmp* Hitting the target with a wild force piercing threw to the feathers with a direct bullseye, the owner shouts "Hit!" As he starts to congratulate Digaos the boy has already notched another arrow and is releasing it. *Vssh* *Thhwmp*

"Another bullseye! If you'll wait I will go down and remove the arrows for your third shot."

Already on a roll Digaos smiles and notches another arrow "No need".

The Third arrow flies through the open space hitting the first arrow dead center while splitting it and pushing it the rest of the way though the target.

"That was amazing!" Chae screams from behind Digaos amazed having never seen Digaos shoot before. It was just another example that he could do anything he tried she thought.

"That was amazing young sir." The old man says as he pulls the green and purple "jewel" from the basket and walked over to him. "This is for you" he smiles handing over it to Digaos who nods and looks to Chae.

"Here Chae this is for you, now lets go and find something to eat." Placing it in her hand she blushes before nodding and following him.

After making it to a booth with grilled kabobs, they stood in line. Chae was holding up the prize they had just won. "I wonder how hard it would be to turn this into a necklace, the shape is way to smooth to be natural."

Digaos laughs "Chae that isn't a Wyvern Heart or whatever he said it was, it isn't even a jewel."

"Are you saying he scammed us?!" She yelled in anger turning a lot of eyes towards them.

He shushes her closing her hands around the item and leaning in by her ear. "No, its worth much more than any jewel so relax, and keep it hidden out of sight."

She nods placing it into the inner part of her dress, then turns back to him expectantly already knowing he will satisfy her curiosity about what the item was.

"It is your second guard, something to protect you while myself and Sir Jinn are not around. It's a Basilisk egg, one close to hatching at that so keep it close."
