Sean could bet that fog wasn't this thick normally. It had naturally rolled in the day most of the people had disappeared. When Sean and his remaining neighbors had finally gathered they had discussed evacuating.
They didn't come to a common census as there simply wasn't much information.
The fog ensured that no one could see further than their own hands either. What they didn't know, was that it also had an unnatural ability of sound isolation.
If they could hear the noises from more than a few meters, they would have heard the raging car crashes and explosions.
The inferno was quickly consumed and extinguished like it never existed.
More and more people grew agitated as no response came from the government.
One of them, an elderly man decided to leave with his wife. No one tried to stop him, they weren't sure of the right thing to do.
The elderly couple hadn't made it out of the city when their car crashed, the headlights did little to light the path. The old lady died due to severe head trauma.
The old man had a much worse fate awaiting him, as he survived only to bleed to death, alone and without help.
Their deaths didn't stop the others from leaving, those who were in the unknown believed that they had made it out.
Still, not all of them traveled using vehicles, a middle-aged man who had been living alone in his apartment decided to scout the path on foot.
People supported his actions, after all, few were willing to go far from the apartment, however restless they were.
The man was called Ron. He was as courageous as the next person but he had a timid personality, likely the reason why his career as a salesman hadn't seen much growth.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
His job was still very demanding as he had to collect and compile the responses from the people who refused to buy from him, let's just say people weren't very polite with their feedback, even more so when the salesman in question lacked confidence.
His job made sure that he roamed a lot and hence, he hadn't stocked up much food, however bad he was at reading social cues, he knew that people wouldn't be willing to help him out, given the uncertain situation they were in.
To make things worse there hadn't been any electricity for two days now, making things more likely to spoil soon. None of them had noticed that even their leftovers from days before had yet to go bad.
With Ron's lead, a few others decided to check things out, one of whom was Sean. Unlike most people, he knew that things weren't going to get better. All of them knew that people had disappeared, but that was all they knew. They all had their theories but as it had been a holiday, most of them had been in their homes, oblivious to what had happened.
Sean was the only one who saw it happen, his friend, Matthew, had been with him. He had seen him disappear before his eyes.
He had failed to register it for a long while, thinking that he must have been seeing things. For a while, he thought that it must have been schizophrenia, even though he had never had an episode before.
After freaking out for a while, he decided to call Matthew to confirm his ideas.
But he visibly shuddered when he saw a light on the couch, where they had been sitting the whole day. To make sure, he turned on the TV, and the movie they were watching was indeed paused. It had been suggested by Matthew.
After hearing others, he realized that none of them knew what had happened. Due to fear of being ridiculed, he decided to keep it to himself.
He decided to follow Ron to see if escape was possible.
Ron wasn't privy to his intentions and was only going to stock up on food. He thought that with more people joining him, they'd have an easier time carrying back more food.
They walked in a line so the person in front could make sure that the path was clear. Spreading out would make it more likely for them to fall on their face.
The path was mostly clear but they hadn't failed to notice a car crash site. Most of them gasped at the sight. The car crash was pretty rough, the driver had failed to make a turn.
It was pretty obvious as the car had rammed through a building at an intersection. The windshield was busted open and mirror fragments were embedded everywhere.
The driver would have been dismembered, which made his absence pretty shocking along with the fact there was no blood anywhere near.
They were now getting anxious, the car crashes were becoming more and more frequent. All of them were subconsciously holding back their breaths.
