The Era of Neo-Evolution
Becoming a Mercenary

Becoming a Mercenary

After sorting through his memories and learning of the history of this world, Namir began to think of what he should do now. He eventually concluded that he should start working towards the goal of gaining his first evolutionary trait, feeling the best profession for someone such as him would be a mercenary as well as understanding that being weak in a world like this would be a heavy disadvantage, especially for a human who would already find themselves discriminated against. Across the galaxy a majority of species look down upon or fear humans, having very few allies; this would lead to tons of conflicts and skirmishes that he couldn't survive without strength.

Namir had a well thought out idea of what type of evolution he should get, "I was a sniper for the army, so I should probably get some type of eyesight from something like a bird." Namir, having thought through what he should try and acquire as his first evolution, realized there was just one problem left, money. He realized that the background of Namir Prince was similar to his, Namir Webster's, he grew up as an orphan and was adopted by an amazing family; though unlike in his previous life, this Namir's family was poor and his adopted father had long since passed.

"I remember that due to evolution and the strong creatures on this planet that they set up mercenary missions involving hunting the beasts on this planet. Also, if I wish to have a constant stable flow of income, I should create a company online that exports the rarer and more valuable animals from this planet to others. However, that is for later when I can afford the permits and have enough income for promoting such a business as well as having enough to acquire a bot to sell the items at the optimal pricing for each planet. And most importantly, when I have the strength to fight these species by myself."

Namir, having thought through a short term and long-term goal to make a living and prepare himself for the future life he had chosen, started to look on his outdated Holopad at the pricings of the different bird type sight-based Neo-Nutrients. He found the bird with the eyesight best suited for him would be a Nethel Eagle, this sight suited a sniper almost perfectly.

Price: 12,000 Galactic Credits

Galactic Credits were the commonly used currency system for humans as well as most sentient species in the universe. 12,000 credits would be considered incredibly cheap by Neo-Nutrient standards, prices ranging from 10,000-10,000,000,000 Credits( Credits currency is incomparable to a system of currency now, they wouldn't even be tradeable as credits are that much more valuable). There were also certain types of Neo-Nutrients that weren't given a price as they were viewed by those who had them as invaluable. Even though it is considered cheap for a Neo-Nutrient, that would still be enough to pay Samir and his mother's rent for well over a year, and only because the planet he lived on was considered rather low-rated in terms of pricing.

For instance, the price of Mason's Zenith Mantis upgrade was around 1,000,000 credits as a Zenith Mantis is one of the more powerful animals on the planet of Zenith. While Zenith is not one of the most powerful planets it is still filled with incredibly strong creatures; Zenith mantises were around 152cm (around 5ft) and had sharp, bladed hands that were each around 3 feet long, and not to forget the crazy strong legs they had that could launch them upwards of 20 meters in the air (around 65 feet).

After finding an animal that suits his current needs, he decided to look for any mercenary missions that met his prerequisite of being repeatable as well as within his current body's skill range. After sifting through hundreds of missions he finally found one that was within his range of ability to complete.

Hunting Orcs

Kill and bring back the ear of at least 10 orcs for this mission to be counted as successful

Rookie Mercenary and above

Mission repeatable

Mission Reward: 750 Credits

The reason the mission was repeatable was due to a strange effect of the planet Zenith, there was a strange energy source that allowed creatures on it to breed rapidly and increased their strength growth factor (SGF). The strength growth factor is something that higher ranked beings came up with to show the growth speed of different species. This was a quest to hunt Orcs, an incredibly strong yet stupid species that could be taken care of by anyone who is careful and prepared. The reason the mission paid so much is due to the overpopulation of the Orc species during the summer of planet Zenith.

'The summer should go on for another 122 days (about 4 months) since it's still only a little over half over.' This was another thing Namir discovered, due to Zenith being quite a bit further away from its sun than Earth was to it's, and it rotating far slower caused the planet to have around 1,100 days (about 3 years). The reason people could survive in these conditions was something that was discovered after humans began to travel space, they found that the traits gained through Neo-Nutrients could be kept within the human genes through adaptation.

Namir instantly signed up as a Rookie Mercenary online before checking his bank account to see how much he had, '500 GC huh, more than enough for what I have planned.' Namir had saved up this amount of money through a year of hard work at a part-time job. With that last thought Namir switched sites to the Galactic Market and set the planet to Zenith of the Marx Galaxy.

He bought a military-grade shovel, spear, a camo tarp, a standard military backpack, and enough supplies to last four days (hammock, food, water, etc.). He set it to delivery, not minding the extra he would have to pay, he would have more than enough GC after his hunting trip. Before leaving he did not forget; however, to leave a note for his mother that he would be spending the next couple of nights at a friend's house but would be back before next Monday, feeling more than a little guilty at this lie.

In the middle of a pitch-black forest, one could see a tall figure digging a hole that had to be at least 15 ft. deep and 35 ft. long, this figure of course being Namir. 'This should be big enough, a troll is only 11'-13' ft. tall (335-396cm), I should be able to fit seven trolls in there with ease.' Finally done with his work for the day he climbed a tree and unwrapping the hammock that was around his waist before tying it between two sturdy branches and falling asleep.

~ 5 hours later ~

Waking up to the sound of birds chirping, Namir quickly reaffirmed that yesterday had not, in fact, been a dream. Taking a minute to gather his bearings Namir began to swiftly scale down the tree, or so he wished. 'This damn body is far too thin compared to my old frame. After I get back, I will have to put myself on a strict regime to put on some muscle.', he thought as he slowly climbed down the tree at a speed matching that of a snail.

With that out of the way Namir checked the pit to make sure nothing fell in before grabbing the camo tarp to place over the hole, he then went around the clearing collecting leaves to place over it. Having his trap set, Namir grabbed a couple of hours' worth of ration as well as two water bottles and a dozen stones, placing them in his backpack before heading out to find a group of Orcs.

~~~~
It did not take long to find a group of six Orc's together, 'This is around the number of Orcs I want, I should quickly lure them back towards the trap.' Orcs were creatures known to gather in small groups of 4-11 when not all packed in a village together.
Quickly and quietly climbing a tree, Namir sat on a thick branch of the tree before lining up his throw and flinging a stone at one of the orcs. The orc, feeling something smack against its back, turned around to see what it was. Not seeing anything it was about to turn around when another stone came flying and smacked against its face. Angry at the stinging feeling on its forehead it yelled over to the other Orcs, before leading them in the direction the object came from. Namir seeing a chance from his success, quickly stood up from the tree; showing himself to the Orcs before jumping down and beginning to run away.
~~~~

Currently you could see a figure quickly running and around 20 meters behind him six Orcs could be seen chasing him; however, they were slowly gaining on him.

19 meters…

16 meters…

14 meters…

10 meters…

When they were around 10 meters behind the figure you could see it jump over a spot in the forest. The Orcs, not paying attention to such actions, continued running after the figure. The Orcs continue to run around 10 meters before they felt the ground below them sink, and then they fell into a pit.

The figure, Namir, could be seen peeking his head over the hole to look down at the Orcs, seeing them down there trying to get out but clearly not able to, Namir felt relieved his trap worked. Quickly walking over to his bag, he grabs the spear from the side holster of it before slowly walking back towards the Orcs.

Looking over the edge Namir could see the Orcs roaring from within the hole in rage, realizing they could not get out. Picking one of them as his target Namir started stabbing the spear down at it, feeling the spear connect Namir let out a sigh of resignation, realizing that it was going to take a while to kill them.

~ 3 hours later ~

It was bright out yet still early, yet you could see the figure of Namir lying on the ground, breathing heavily. 'That took way too fucking long, luckily for me something unexpected happened; the orcs got angry at their apparent helplessness and began to attack one another.' Quickly gaining his breath, Namir slowly dragged out the Orcs bodies before cutting off one of the Orcs ears. "Alright time to repeat this."

~~~~
It had been around a week since Namir started hunting Orcs and already collected 272 Orc ears. This was enough to complete the mission 27 times earning him 20,250 GC, more than enough to buy the Neo-Nutrient. 'With this I should also buy a bow and a sniper, the bow for hunting and the sniper for combat with people.'
Deciding that it was time for him to head back home, he slowly gathered his supplies before heading out of Zenith Forest and back towards Marx City.
A short while later Namir could be seen slowly walking down the road towards his house, taking out his key and unlocking the door before entering. 'Mom should still be at work for another few hours, I should get changed and order the stuff I want before she comes back.'
Namir took a quick 13-minute shower before getting on his Holopad to buy that Bald Eagle Nutrient. Purchasing the Nutrient his funds quickly drained to around 8,000 GC. Scrolling through his holopad Namir found a foldable longbow for easier storing and a medium quality sniper rifle, the price of both together being around 7,450 GC, but with the code of shipping came out to around 7,900 GC.
Having bought everything he needed he waited for a second before the objects materialized in front of him. Deciding to wait to drink the Nutrient until after talking to his mom, Namir carefully placed it in a drawer so it would not be easily knocked over or spill.
Turning his attention to the weapons, he decided that he should go to a virtual world shooting range to test out how effective the sniper was. Checking the time to make sure his mom was still at work for an hour, or two Namir instantly signed on to his VR account on his Holopad before choosing a shooting range.
Closing his eyes, when he opened them again Namir found himself within a shooting range filled with the loud sound of gunshots. Walking over to a terminal Namir quickly chose the moving target option with a range of 3 miles, the limit of the human eye. He then switched to the select weapon menu and chose his exact sniper but with an iron sight as well as his longbow.
Feeling the floor disappear beneath him he quickly reappeared in a forested environment with animals and other species running around. Scaling a tree and lying down on the branch Namir viewed as the best for sight, he took out his sniper and lined his sights up with an orc. 'I should first start out with slow moving targets and then when I am a bit more used to this gun and body move on to faster moving targets.
~ 1 hour later ~
A satisfied Namir could be seen looking at his score for the shooting range.
New Personal Best
Accuracy 9.6/10
Range 10/10
Moving Target 9.1/10
Deciding to reward himself he walked to the fridge and pulled out a beer. Taking a swig, he started heading back towards his room, yet before he could even take a couple steps the front door was opened. He was startled, freezing in place staring toward the door like a deer in headlights.
The one to open the door was a woman who looked to be no older than 30, she had looks like Namir, with thin yet sharp eyebrows, a thin nose, full cherry red lips, with a beautiful mocha brown skin, she was rather tall for a women standing at 1.83 m (about 6ft). Anyone who had seen her would come to consider her to be a beautiful young woman.
The second she walked into the house and her eyes looked up, she noticed Namir and a relieved, yet angry expression appeared on her face. She instantly walked over and began looking at him all over while saying, "Where have you been, I've been so worried about you. If you dare lie to me and say you were at a friend's house again, I'll lock you up and not let you leave this house for the next month." This young-looking woman was Namir's mother.
