Epilogue

___

Never throughout the winds of time have I come across a soul so resilient. A soul so willing to forsake the easy road for the benefit of humanity, despite how it has beaten her down. Yet, my existence mourns her. The light within is fading. The white innocence of her hope fades to grey. The world of humanity breaks her apart, piece by little piece, and will only continue to do so. Growing with her, it has become difficult not to care about her. The only Bound I’ve come to truly want to save, has no other choice but to fight in a battle she was thrust into.

There is no saving her from this fate. It is now a matter of her survival and victory.

Trapped within her, I can feel her heart begin to race. Though the rest of her remains calm, the inner turmoil can’t be hidden from me. On this night, she waits for her first mission since her recovery concluded. A bank robbery, attempted by one known as Calendar Man. As she awaits his arrival, she stands ready on the roof above while the world celebrates this day of love. Valentines day. A day to be heartful and caring, once again she sacrifices the usual celebrations to continue the effort to keep Gotham safe. Seeing her from within makes it a sad sight, really. Though I am proud of her, I had hoped things would be different for Sarah. The fact she is missing so much life to live in pursuit of this, and not preferring it any other way. The matter of knowing she’ll never have a normal life…

But we mustn't cease. Sarah can never be safe unless the Bloodspiller is brought to a heel.

While she fronts the effort, I will find my own ways to stop the Bloodspiller. Now that my voice is heard again, I can trust she will not falter to fear or the voices of slaughter again. Every step she takes, I will take it with her. Walking this life with Sarah has made me stir with peculiar feelings. The disgust I once felt for humanity is now waning… As if seeing the world through her eyes has made me understand that mortal life is worth protecting. This was what humanity was meant to be, the light I’ve yet to see. Blinded by the darkness of the monsters I reincarnated into, I see the world and its light now. As long as she lives, I will stand by her. This child of hope, this mortal who’s opened my eyes… She is the key to Gotham’s salvation. The effort to stop Caedes is just the beginning. She might have the ability to open the eyes of these mortals as well.

I shudder to think what the Bloodspiller has in store. Whatever malicious plans she will concoct, I vow to combat them. I’ve let the Bloodspiller manipulate my Bounds for too long. It’s time for the cycle to end, and for a new one to begin.

As the night snows down upon Sarah, she waits. As her heart rate continues to increase, she prepares herself for the fight ahead. Five men come into view on the white dusted streets. Wind swirls around the rooftops, twisting and turning in every direction. She turns her head upward, looking to the sky. Looking for wherever I might be.

“Are you ready, Mortis?”

She speaks softly, waiting for my response. The five men stalk closer to the bank, preparing to break in. I could feel the power from my stir, relinquishing it to her will. Extending my hand to her and waiting for her to take it, I speak softly to her, keeping my word to the child of hope.

“I am, dear one. I’m always with you… Let us begin.”
