The gates of the college stood wide open, unguarded and seemingly inviting. Blue Rose exchanged puzzled glances as they crossed the threshold into the grounds, expecting some sort of challenge or scrutiny. Yet, to their surprise, they encountered no resistance. They were struck by the absence of any guards or sentries. It was an unusual sight, one that left them feeling both intrigued and apprehensive. However, their concerns were quickly dispelled when Evileye, ever perceptive, realized the true reason behind the lack of security.
"It's the adventurer plates." Evileye remarked, her tone filled with a mixture of fascination and realization. She gestured to the adventurer plates hanging from their necks. "They're imbued with a powerful magic that allows us to enter the college grounds without any interference."
The others looked at their plates, marveling at the intricate enchantments woven into the metal. It was a testament to the advanced magical craftsmanship of this world, a world where even the most mundane objects were infused with potent sorcery. Evileye went on to explain that without the plates, they would likely have felt the full force of the college's defensive wards and spells – a hostile magical aura that would have repelled any unauthorized intruders with lethal force.
But with their adventurer plates safely around their necks, Blue Rose could move freely within the college grounds, unhindered by the magical barriers that protected its secrets and its students. It was a testament to their newfound status as recognized adventurers, a privilege that they would not take for granted.
As they made their way deeper into the college, Evileye couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder at the sheer magnitude of the magic that surrounded them.
"It's remarkable," Evileye murmured, her eyes alight with curiosity. "The magic in this world is unlike anything I've ever encountered. It's... alive, in a way. Reacting to our presence, our intentions."
“Are you fine now?” Gargaran asked, concerned after seeing the nausea that Evileye suffered when they entered the city.
“Yeah, I am slowly getting adapted to the magic-filled air.” Evileye nodded. “I wouldn’t wonder if this city gives birth to mages at a hundred percent rate.”
It was a world unlike any they had ever known. A somber thought entered Evileye’s mind.
If only Lakyus...
With Lakyus being carefully supported by Gargaran, the members of Blue Rose hurried through the bustling grounds of Winterhold College. Spotting a passing mage, they quickly approached, showing the mage the letter of recommendation that had led them to the college in search of treatment for their leader.
"Excuse me," Gargaran spoke up, her voice urgent yet hopeful, "We've been directed here with this letter. Our leader is in need of medical attention. Could you please guide us to the appropriate facilities?"
The mage took the letter, scanning it briefly before nodding in understanding.
"Of course," he replied. "Follow me. I'll take you to the House of Healing."
Blue Rose breathed a collective sigh of relief as they fell into step behind the mage, grateful for the guidance they had received. With each step, their anticipation grew, fueled by the hope that their leader would soon receive the care she so desperately needed.
As they made their way through the large buildings and student dormitories on the grounds of Winterhold College, passing students and scholars going about their studies, the mage led them to a grand building marked with the emblem of a healing staff.
"Here we are," the mage announced, gesturing toward the entrance. "The House of Healing. They'll be able to assist your leader here. Please allow me to leave you here as I have matters to attend to."
They thanked the mage who left immediately. With a mixture of gratitude and anxiety, Blue Rose entered the House of Healing, their hearts heavy with concern for Lakyus's well-being. Yet, they were determined to see her through this ordeal, no matter what kind of truth they will see or hear about their leader’s illness. Their footsteps quickening as they made their way inside. Gargaran held Lakyus close, a sense of urgency driving her forward as she prayed for her leader's swift recovery.
They were greeted by the soothing scent of herbs and potions, and the gentle hum of healing magic filled the air. But it seemed this building had no patients nor any crowd to slow their process for treating their leader.
Then Evileye detected someone’s magic and presence and immediately signaled others to caution. Contradicting their expectations, a mage who seemed to radiate enthusiasm and excitement, suddenly rushed out from a room in a dash after hearing their footsteps from the wooden floor. Her eyes lit up as she caught sight of Lakyus being carried in, and she hurried forward to welcome them.
"Welcome, welcome!" the mage exclaimed, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I've been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to tend to patients. It's not often we receive visitors in need of healing here in Winterhold, you see. But with so few injured people in the city, I've had little opportunity to fully display my abilities. It's a rare treat to have patients to tend to!”
Blue Rose exchanged glances, impressed by the mage's passion and dedication to her craft. Despite the seriousness of Lakyus's condition, they couldn't help but be buoyed by the mage's infectious energy.
"Greetings! I am Abalay. I've always wanted to put my healing prowess to the test," she continued, her excitement bubbling over and beamed with pride as she introduced herself to Blue Rose. "As you can see with my Golden Badge, I am graduate of the Restoration School here at Winterhold College. So I can guarantee you my restoration skills!"
Evileye scanned the woman mage in her eyes to sense her level of magic and Evileye judged her to be of that of the above the average imperial mage she encountered, which impressed her a little that this city treats mages on this level as a minor healer. She made a small finger signal to the rest of her team that gestures the clear sign for the mage.
The mage in question hopped around with great energy which was unlike her visitors who were just surprised and confused at her excitement.
“Is she the patient?” She asked, pointing at Lakyus.
“Yes.” Gargaran nodded.
The mage quickly changed her mood from excitement to a serious face as she took out some tools from her large side pocket of her robes. Then she used that to check the pulse and complexion of Lakyus.
“What was… her illness or her injuries?”
“That’s the problem, we don’t know what it is.” Evileye said. “She just don’t… well, she became inactive like that.”
“Hmmm…” the mage checked Lakyus’ eyes, breathing rate and reaction to external stimuli such as pain by pinching her arms and the body points on her hands, which she gave no response. “I need to check her more in my clinic more. Please carry her.”
With a warm smile, Abalay gestured for them to follow her as she led them into her clinic, which doubled as her personal room. The space was cozy yet cluttered, filled with shelves upon shelves of books and scrolls, each containing knowledge and wisdom accumulated over years of study.
She bustled about and quickly went back to her room, her movements quick and efficient as she prepared a nearby cot for Lakyus by the time they arrived to her room.
"This is where I do most of my healing work," Abalay explained, her eyes sparkling with pride. "I find that being surrounded by books helps to focus my energies and enhance my abilities."
Blue Rose nodded in understanding, impressed by the mage's dedication to her craft. They gently laid Lakyus down on the cot. She was still unresponsive to anything they will do to her.
“Please do take her armor off. Just leave her clothes instead.” the mage instructed.
With a nod, Blue Rose settled in and helped each other in taking off the armor, placing their trust in the capable hands of the eager mage. As she began her inspection for her work, they could only hope and pray that her healing abilities would be enough to see Lakyus through her ordeal.
As Abalay conducted her examination of Lakyus, her keen eyes and skilled hands moved with precision and care and her hands glowing with healing energy. With each observation, she grew more attuned to the nature of Lakyus's ailment, sensing that it ran deeper than physical injury. She inspected Lakyus's eyes, Abalay detected a haunting emptiness, a sorrow that seemed to linger behind their depths. She noted the way Lakyus's hands trembled ever so slightly, a telltale sign of the inner turmoil she was facing.
“Were you diving in a dungeon and she was struck by some eerily colored spell or magic?” the mage asked.
“You mean a curse?” Evileye asked.
“Yeah.” the mage replied.
“Not that I know of. Because I scanned her many times already and found no traces of any curses or debuff magic on her.” Evileye replied while looking at her companions. “But…”
“Oh you’re a mage too! Thank the Great Mortred! This makes the procedure easier and faster to explain with a fellow mage present.” Abalay clasped her two hands together.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
“What happened to her before she became to this state?” Abalay interrupted her and asked. “I am sorry, but I am not being nosy. This is part of my inspection to find out what ails her.”
“Well… its a long story.” Gargaran said.
“A story that I needed to hear in order to treat her.” Abalay insisted.
“Well, we are from a very another country that is far from her and also adventurers on that place. And Lakyus was a noble of that country so she was born and trained as a leader, which she would became one for our group.”
“Can you tell me more about her personality?”
“And she was our healer, damage dealer and tank due to her great martial skill and equipment. She is very courageous and a determined person. Once she sets her eyes on a goal, she will never divert from it unless she sees another substitute or better option. She doesn't shy away from confronting formidable adversaries and challenges.” Tina explained.
“As an experienced adventurer, Lakyus is a skilled fighter, proficient in various combat techniques and strategies. Her combat prowess is formidable, making her a valuable asset in battles against powerful adversaries.” Tia added her thoughts. “Lakyus demonstrates intelligence and strategic thinking in her approach to challenges. She carefully evaluates situations and devises plans to overcome obstacles, utilizing both her combat skills and tactical acumen.”
“Despite her strength and determination, Lakyus also possesses a compassionate side. She shows empathy towards others, especially those in need or who have suffered injustices. This compassion fuels her desire to fight against evil and protect the innocent.” Gargaran said with a tinge of nostalgia.
“Within the Blue Roses, Lakyus holds a leadership role, guiding and coordinating the group's activities. Her leadership qualities are evident in her decisiveness and ability to inspire others. Lakyus is fiercely loyal to her comrades and allies, demonstrating unwavering dedication to their cause. Her loyalty extends beyond mere camaraderie, as she is deeply committed to protecting the people she cares about.” Evileye closed in. “And her greatest and probably proud asset that she stands strong was her strong sense of justice. Driven by a desire to right wrongs and uphold moral principles. She actively seeks to confront injustice and protect those who cannot defend themselves, embodying a sense of righteousness in her actions.”
“So overall, Lakyus is a courageous, determined leader with a strong sense of loyalty, compassion, and justice. Her combination of strength, skill, and noble ideals makes her a compelling person.” Abalay concluded.
But it was when Abalay delved into Lakyus's past, asking about her life and experiences, that the true nature of her condition became clear. Through careful questioning and empathetic listening from the tales of her companions, Abalay pieced together the fragments of Lakyus's story, uncovering the psychological trauma that lay at the root of her suffering.
"It's most likely that she received, not a physical injury but deep emotional wounds." Abalay murmured, her voice soft yet resolute. "Her body may be whole, but her spirit is fractured… can I ask if there is or something very bad happened recently where Lakyus got involved with?"
Blue Rose looked at each other and sighed. Evileye decided to open up the issue.
“We… actually… back in our home… we left many friends. We were forced to make a choice. To save ourselves or die with others. We know… all four of us know that we are not heroes who could defeat evil just like in those fantasy books for young child.” Evileye’s frustration and regret pours out on her shaking voice. “Except Lakyus… we know she will try to save others even to her death. She will make a stand even if she dies trying. We know this… that’s why…”
“Go on… I’ll wait.” Alabay patiently waits for Evileye to finish.
“… that’s why we forced her to NOT make that choice.” Evileye continued. “...we stopped her from making that choice and dragged her with us in our escape… and when she woke up... that’s what happened.”
“I see now...”Abalay began to formulate a treatment plan, drawing upon her expertise in restoration magic and her deep understanding of the human psyche. And as she worked tirelessly to mend the wounds that lay hidden within Lakyus's heart and mind, she couldn't help but feel a profound sense of empathy for the woman lying before her. She recognized in Lakyus a kindred spirit, one who had dedicated her life to serving others with unwavering faith and courage.
From the stories shared by the members of Blue Rose, Abalay pieced together a portrait of Lakyus as a paragon of virtue and honor, a beacon of light in a world shrouded in darkness.
But beneath the surface, she sensed a wellspring of inner turmoil, a burden of guilt and self-blame that threatened to consume her patient from within.
"It's not uncommon," Abalay murmured softly, her voice tinged with understanding. "For those who walk the path of purity and righteousness, the weight of responsibility can be overwhelming. The constant pressure to save others, to uphold one's principles at all costs—it can take a toll on even the strongest of souls."
She paused, her gaze lingering on Lakyus's still form.
"I believe what broke Lakyus's sanity was not a physical wound, but a deep-seated sense of guilt and self-pity. She blames herself for the suffering of others, for the injustices of the world. It's a burden that many monks, priests, and paladins carry, a shadow that haunts them even in their brightest moments."
As she spoke, Abalay's heart ached for Lakyus, knowing the pain she must be enduring.
“But can you treat her?” As Evileye and her companions anxiously asked, they couldn't help but hold onto a glimmer of hope that the skilled mage would be able to provide a solution for Lakyus' affliction.
However, their hopes were quickly dashed as Abalay delivered her frank and sobering response.
"I'm afraid there is no treatment that I or anyone else can offer." Abalay began with a tone of regret. "The truth is, healing emotional trauma is a deeply personal journey, one that only Lakyus herself can undertake."
She paused, her expression grave as she continued.
"Others will offer hypnosis or even altering her memories but… attempting to forcibly remove the trauma would only cause further harm on the long term, risking irreversible damage to her psyche.” Abalay said.
The Blue Roses hung their heads in despair as they heard her words. The weight of their truth settling over the group like a heavy shroud. It was a harsh and painful reality to confront, but one that they knew they could not ignore. But then they heard something that raised their heads a little.
“The only path to true healing for her affliction lies in acceptance. The person afflicted must come to accept that they are not infallible." Abalay explained. "They must acknowledge their own limitations and recognize that they cannot save everyone. It's a difficult truth to swallow, but it's the only way forward."
As Blue Rose reflected on the situation, they heard a statement that sparked a glimmer of hope within them.
"…while I couldn't offer a direct cure for her emotional trauma, I could still provide invaluable support through her restoration spells. I have spells that I used that you can consider to be a mental massage or anesthetic that soothes a troubled mind. I usually use this to soldiers who suffered a trauma, a survivor or a victim of an assault." Abalay explained. "Though it may not fully heal her, it can provide some relief, soothing the turmoil within her mind and allowing her to find a moment of peace. And this way, I could initiate a dialogue with her and with your help, You could also provide small talks to her that will begin stimulation on her part that would result a response. A response or reaction from her is our priority."
She turned to Evileye and her companions with a steady and resolute gaze. Abalay emphasized the importance of starting a dialogue with Lakyus, even if she initially resisted.
"Small talk can go a long way," she suggested. "It's a way to establish a connection, to show Lakyus that she is not alone in bearing her burden. And with time and patience, she may come to realize that she has allies who are willing to stand by her side no matter what. Your presence and support are her greatest assets in overcoming this dilemma."
With a gentle yet firm demeanor, she outlined the first step: ensuring her patient to receive consistent rest and tranquility for her mind.
"I will need Lakyus to remain under my care for at least a week," Abalay explained, her voice infused with quiet determination. "During this time, I will use my healing magic to soothe her mind and send her calming thoughts that will help alleviate her mental exhaustion."
Turning her attention to Evileye and the members of Blue Rose, Abalay extended an invitation for them to stay as well.
"You are all welcome to stay here with Lakyus," she offered, gesturing toward the bunkbeds hidden beneath her cluttered shelves of books. "I have space for everyone, and as long as you abide by the rules of the College, there should be no issue with adventurers staying in my clinic. I don’t get many patients anyway after Winterhold College started sending healing mages across the holds."
Evileye and her companions expressed their gratitude to Abalay for her generous offer, assuring her that they would gladly accept her hospitality. However, it seems Blue Rose realized another thing that Abalay forgot to mention first.
"We appreciate your kindness, Abalay." Evileye began with an earnest tone. "But we must also ensure that we can compensate you properly for your expertise and care."
Abalay's expression was surprised for a moment, understanding dawned in her eyes as she realized her oversight.
“Ha? Eh? O-of course! Of course! I actually forgot the topic about payment." she replied while scratching her head in embarrassment. "I apologize for not discussing payment sooner! I was so excited and focused to receive my first patient in this month that I forgot about it.
Then she paused, contemplating their predicament for a moment before a thoughtful expression crossed her features.
“Hmm… about 50 gold coins for the cost for my treatment and care for Lakyus.” Abalay said. “While I cannot waive the fee for my services, I am willing to negotiate a fair pric-”
"It seems fair," Gargaran remarked, her tone reflecting a sense of agreement. "We should be able to earn enough to cover the cost in no time. ” The rest of the Blue Rose nodded in understanding, she considered the amount to be quite reasonable. Leaving the mage in shock.
“Geeez, adventurers really are money makers huh.” Abalay said her impression out loud.
“But we actually…” Gargaran started to smile as if wanting to ask for something.
“Don’t have the gold yet. We actually just arrived in the city in our rush to find an immediate treatment of Lakyus.” Evileye completed the statement of her companion. “So we may need to accept some quests first to get the money we needed to pay for her treatment.”
“Oh…” Abalay started to understand more of their situation. “ D-dont worry! It is actually one of your benefits as an adventurer to receive treatment before payment. Your priority should be Lakyus's well-being, and I will do my best to accommodate her needs in this matter on your absence."
With their decision made, Evileye and her companions prepared to leave Lakyus in Abalay's capable hands as they ventured back to the Guild to begin accepting some quests.
“Lakyus, we will be back. Please take care of yourself and don’t worry. We will get you back in shape as long as it takes at any costs.” Evileye held Lakyus hands who still gave no response with her empty eyes. All of them bid farewell to their injured leader, they promised to return soon.
“Shouldn’t you rest for now? It’s already the start of the night.” Abalay said.
“But we could get quests and contracts easier when everyone is asleep. And its much better to go for a quest at night.” Gargaran said as she rested her large ax on her shoulder. “We’ll be back, maybe tomorrow morning.”
With a sense of new hopeful purpose driving them forward, the members of Blue Rose set out once more, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead as they worked to secure the funds necessary to pay for Lakyus's treatment.
The mage paused, her gaze sweeping over the group with a sense of sincerity. And as they departed, Abalay couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life. She swore deep inside her, that she will do her utmost duty to treat the patient that was left on her care.
