13- The Wrath of a Dragon

Ember didn't waste any time, immediately bathing the Demon King in a wave of fire. It threw up a barrier, but with its magic reserves so severely depleted, the barrier shattered immediately. The Demon King let out a howl as its skin sizzled in Embers Inferno. Fighting through the pain, the Demon King moved to counterattack. It charged directly through the fire, striking out at Ember with a vicious blow. Ember easily parried the blow with her claws and retaliated with a chomp to the shoulder.

With the Dragons Teeth immobilizing the Demon Kings arm, it quickly delivered a vicious kick to Ember. She was knocked back from the Demon King, taking a sizable chunk of the Demon Kings shoulder with her. With some distance between the Demon King and herself, she quickly unleashed another wave of fire. Scorching the Demon King again. The next several minutes were a flurry of claws and fire. The Demon King and Ember flew through the sky, engaging in a fierce melee with Ember repeatedly using her fire breath. For every blow the Demon King delivered, Ember delivered one right back with just as much ferocity.

Ember quickly realized that the Demon King was trying to engage in a battle of attrition. But that was just fine by her. Having fought Demon Kings before, she was acutely aware of how dependent they are on their regeneration abilities. After several more minutes of brutal combat, the Demon King suddenly unleashed a wave of force, putting considerable distance between Ember and itself.

The Demon King gave a smile, but that smile quickly became a fit of rage. Ember gave a smile, her sharp teeth glinting in the sunlight.

"Finally noticed the effect of my fire I see. You can't regenerate from your injuries. Wonder why that is?"

Now, while Demon Kings are evil and intent on conquering the world for their master, they aren't stupid. And it quickly realized that it couldn't win the fight. The Demon King quickly tried running away, but it was too late by that point. The Sky fortress was already in range of it. As the Demon King began to fly away, a blast from the Sky Fortress directly hit it, sending it directly into the ground.

Ember was right on top of the Demon King, immediately bathing it in another wave of fire. As she continued her attack, she gloated to the Demon King.

"Trying to run away?"

The Demon King glared at the Dublo, enraged that the Sky Fortress had prevented its escape.

"Don't worry about the Sky Fortress. It's just here to keep you in place. I fully intend to kill you personally."

The Demon King gave out a loud roar, charging directly for the dragon. She happily obliged. The resulting melee was fierce. Embers claws tore at the Demon King, severing the Demon Kings arm while the Demon King tore a massive wound in the Dragon's side. Ember bathed the Demon King in dragon fire, while simultaneously using healing magic to repair her wound. Seeing her recovery, the Demon King let out an enraged scream. Ember just gave another wicked smile.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

"Oh dear. You think I'd fight fair? After all the people your kind have butchered?"

The Demon King decided to try running away again, only to be slammed back down to the ground by another blast of the main guns of the Sky Fortress. Ember once again bathed it in a wave of Dragon fire.

The Demon King was furious and desperate. It knew it couldn't win this fight. Deciding that if it couldn't win, it would take Ember down with it. The Demon King began to destabilize its mana core. However, the next thing it knew, the Demon King found its vision spinning. What was going on? The Demon King then realized exactly what had happened, as its vision settled on its own headless body. The last thing it ever saw was Ember approaching it, pure contempt in her eyes.

"As if I'd give you the opportunity."

With that, Ember brought her claws down, reducing the Demon Kings head into a pulp.

----------------------------------------

The next few hours were a blur of activity. The Sky Fortress sent out patrols to mop up the remaining demons. Ember helped out of course, taking out several Demons, but as the day wound down, and the number of Demons remaining dwindled down. Ember found herself on one of the walkways on the edge of the sky fortress. Eventually, she was joined by the rest of the special production team and Null. The six of them gazed off into the sunset. Vane spoke up with a somber tone.

"The Colonel always loved watching the sunset when he got the chance."

Ember gave a whimsical grin.

"Yeah. Yeah, he did."

Branchleaf was holding a pot filled with soil and an acorn. Very respectfully, he knelt down in the direction of the crater, carefully planting the seed into the soil before infusing it with nature magic.

Meanwhile, Stonehammer pulled out a bottle of what looked to be expensive whiskey and uncorked it before ceremoniously dumping it over the edge of the ship.

Willis, for his part, pulled out an ornate, mechanical bird, infusing it with magic before releasing it. The six people watched it fly off into the sunset.

After the sun went down, with their respects paid, the six of them went their separate ways, with Vane accompanying Null.

----------------------------------------

As the two of them walked down the hallway, Vane spoke to Null.

"Well. Now that the Demon King is dead, we're going to get back to the plan to get you transitioned to a regular civilian life for a dungeon."

Null walked slowly. Thinking carefully of his response.

Will that be enough? Originally, I agreed with you. I just wanted to transition to a regular dungeon life. Now... now I don't know.

Vane nodded.

"For most of us here. It's the same way. I also originally just wanted to be a civilian. After Demons massacred my friends and family though, I knew I wanted to be a part of the military to defend this world from those vile abominations."

Null slowed down to a stop.

I see.

Vane grabbed Nulls shoulder.

"If you really want to join the military, then you need to learn how to properly be a dungeon. That being said, you don't need to be a member of the Military to fight Demons. We mainly deal with the Demon kings, but the regular demons that escape are normally dealt with by the Adventurers and the Dungeon guild. Think about that. Okay?"

Null relented, seeing the sense in Vane's words. Vane released Null's shoulder

"At any rate, we're going to have a memorial service for everyone that didn't make it tomorrow. Would you like to join us with the rest of the crew?"

Null nodded.

Yeah. Yeah, I'd like that.

With that, Vane led Null to a room he could use for the night before retiring to his own to get some much-needed rest.
