Chapter 2: A dwarf?

I woke up rather early. Demon lords do not really need that much sleep. What with the heroes and armies constantly attacking you, you do learn that you do not have enough time to sleep. Besides, quite a lot of demon lords have their castles built on top of an active volcano which are noisy, often shake and fairly bright. Stupid as it may sound, it is a natural defense but it does mean that demon lords, at least in my world, have evolved to need less sleep.

I look out of the inn room window to see the sun slightly higher than sunrise. I don't know the current season so I can only guess it is from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. It sort of seems like Arthur forgot me. That is what it seems like but then there is a loud bang at the door.

"Time for your lessons Drac" (Arthur)

I open the door and leave with Arthur and we start heading to the castle and no, I have no change of clothes. Once again, scummy King.

Even though it is light, it is still fairly cold. The worse thing for a demon lord who lived on a volcano. My guess was that it was Winter which meant that I woke up later than I thought. For a Captain, Arthur isn't very punctual. Once we got to the castle, I could inspect it. In the dark, it did not seem that good but now, it looked better than my own. Of course, nothing would compare to the black walls and tapestries made from human hair; and there were no corpses lying around, but it still seemed much better than mine.

It seemed like the King had spent an enormous sum of money on his castle.

As soon as we go through the main entrance, we head right and up a spiral staircase to a large library. Once again, I was rather concerned with the king. There were little to no books, meaning that the King doesn't care for knowledge. Most castles have at least one great library. Even mine had one, even if they were stolen by my ancestors.

"Sit down and wait for the librarian. I will be back to get you some lunch, then we will train" (Arthur)

Without letting me say anything, Arthur left the rather disappointing library and I sat there waiting. No one came after a while so I decided to get out some books on my own and read them. I picked out out three interesting looking books: The History of Golrend, The onslaught of the Demon Lord, Currency for children.

The History of Golrend  basically summarized the kingdom's history. The kingdom I was summoned to is called Golrend. In the past, demon lords have threatened the land and have attacked it. Each time though, heroes stopped it. The most recent hero, Aaron, stopped the demon lord and founded his own kingdom and he called it Golrend. The current King is one of his descendants. The nobles in the kingdom all descend from people who helped Aaron in his journey like his companions.

This kind of plays to my advantage. When I have my own kingdom, I can bring Golrend down from underneath the King's feet by corrupting the nobles and leading a rebellion.

The onslaught of the Demon Lord made me cry. It is the oldest of the three books and tells how a past demon lord wiped out 90% of the human population. The guy I will have to beat is supposed to be at least twice as powerful.

The last book, Currency for Children, was the most informing. Apparently, this world does not deal in souls. Instead, it deals with coinage. pfff undeveloped. Copper is the lowest form of currency. 50 copper for a silver coin. 100 silver for a gold. To put that in perspective, the inn room that Arthur paid for me cost 20 copper per night and I wasn't even provided food. So 8 silver 20 copper for three weeks. It was fairly run down and I... wait, I didn't have breakfast at all.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

As if my stomach realized at the same time, it growled rather loudly. At the same time, a pile of books moved. A rather short creature emerged from it. At first I thought it was a child but it was strangely wrinkled and had grey hair. Sure, in my world we have races other than humans but I hadn't seen any in this world so I guessed there weren't any.

"A... dwarf?" (Drac)

"Stupid human, I'm a halfling obviously. Anyway, what are you doing trespassing in my library?" (Wrinkly halfling librarian)

"Umm..." (Drac)

"Oh that's right, I have to teach an oaf about Golrend." (Wrinkly halfling librarian)

Wow. First he calls me stupid. Then he accuses me of trespassing and now, he interrupts me.

"Well, what are you waiting for, follow me." (Asshole halfling librarian)

He beckons at me like one would towards an ignorant child. Annoyed, I follow him and we enter a passageway that I had no idea was there. It had been previously been blocked off by a halfling that pisses me off, sleeping in a pile of books. Not on one, but in one.

It leads to a room that is slightly bigger than the previous one. Looks like the King cared about books more than I thought, if only slightly. The room had books and scrolls. The halfling pulls out a large-ish scroll and unravels it. It seemed to be a map.

"This continent is called Acronia..." (librarian halfling)

Author note:

Sorry this chapter is a bit boring. I wanted to include quite a bit about what happens in the library.

Also, just to let you guys know, I will have to release tomorrows chapter in the afternoon GMT and will try to get it up around 15:00, maybe earlier. I have something important to do tomorrow morning and will hopefully be back at lunchtime and finish the chapter that I have already half written. I hope you look forward to it.

Extra: This morning I noticed that my first chapter had been approved and it had 100+ views on it and with my second chapter out, I have 640+ views all together. Thank you for reading this novel. I honestly thought at best I would get 10 views in a week. Thank you so much for taking the time to read it. I know each chapter is short but I also know that for some it can be easier to read little bits at a time. I will probably get each chapter out daily so per week, I should be giving you about 6300 words which is more and less than other authors. I personally prefer this way as I can get you guys' feedback quicker and improve my work faster than if I did large chapters weekly. Once again, thank you.
