Chapter 18 Ambushed

*Boom*

Sounds of heavy combat sounded through the forest. Explosions, Fire, Tremors, lots of things were happening.

In the middle of all it was Kitsu, Rook and I and in the middle of us was a rare monster found in deep mountains. A Silverback.

This monster is said to be around level 500 and is know by the term Field Boss. A boss monster that lives in the open and not in a dungeon. The silverback was a large Ape body easily 9 meters tall with pure snow white fur. He lives in dense forests where it has plenty of huge trees that can support its size while I climbs.

Even with its immense size its agile and a big pain in the ass because its hard to hit him. Us three had to work together to get him to the ground so we can fight because he has home field advantage which gives him a power boost just like we get when we are in the castle.

How did we get into a fight with this thing. Well we weren't searching for it thats for sure. We had been traveling for about 2 days. With Rook the distance we covered was equal to what we covered in a week when we were going to Galton.

We had stopped for the night in the forest known as Dusk Glade Forest.

We had set up camp and were already sleeping. I was in my sleeping bag which was more of a one slightly thicker blanket to lay on and a thinner one to cover myself. I was laying down on Rook who let me sleep on his back so I wouldn’t stay on the ground.

It was around midnight when Rook suddenly stood up on edge. I instantly woke up noticing his sudden tension. Looking down Kitsu was already on full alert looking out into the forest. He was making a low growl. I transformed into my demon form and got ready pulling my chained sickle.

Out of no where the huge Silver ape body came falling down towards us. Its been a few hours since we started and the sun was starting to appear already.

As he climbed the tree once again I readied my magic.

Baal: Guys I’m going to burn the area clear out.

The two just look and ran away. I began channeling my magic and then activate a fire spell.

[Fire Field]

In an area 50 meters around me the area completely caught fire and began spreading and quickly devouring the vegetation within without spreading beyond this point. To perform this large of a spell cost a lot of mana I will tell you that and its only my affinity to fire magic that minimized the cost.

As the last tree fell I extinguish the fire which leaves a burnt barren land. After a bit my two companions appear and run next to me.

???: GRRR GRAWWWWWW

The growling came from a be north and when we looked the Silverback, which had been caught in the AoE attack had a few burns but was extremely angry now.

Kitsu: Master things aren’t looking good. Judging by his posture. If we continue this for much longer he will enter berserk state.

His life was already at 40% but so was mine thank to healing. Kitsu had kept a distance and attacked with magic but Rook got up close and personal with him when he was able to get a hit in with his drill horn. The price for that though was a beating that would kill a human.

Kitsu: You haven’t practiced it master but I think you should use that formation the human wrote down in the book and had Rachet hide with magic.

(http://imgur.com/72eYNYZ This design more or less for magic circles in this world. Outer rim holds circuit like design)

Baal: If you two can keep him distracted then I’ll do it.

Kitsu: Go then.

Baal: Don’t die here thats an order.

Rook: Heh Yes master.

I unfolded my wings and flew up high before the Silverback reacted. Kitsu began firing ball of fire to get his attention while Rook charged a dark flame bomb and shot it at the ape.

He dodged the attack but the plan was to corner him in the open space here where we could fight more fairly.

In the air I pulled out my gun. It had ranked up with me and was now a Lesser Tengu Colt Supernatural. The red color before was now gone and now it was black but with red writing I didn’t understand. It was charged with six bullets but what I was going to do was something I’m not sure works. Dok wrote in the book Lilian gave me about a type of magic circle which has smaller circles within to strengthen its power.

During the time he was writing the book I had allowed him a small glimpse into the books first 3 chapters which explain what the circles were and how they worked. He said that weapons can be used as a medium to create the circles that are more complex. When I showed him my gun his eyes began shining and when I pulled out one of the solid mana bullets he was intrigued. He asked me if I ever thought of drawing the magic circle on the bullet. Obviously not since we barely know what the circles can really do. Anyway he spent a long time hoarded up in the library writing that book for us with what he learned.

For me he created something know as the Pentagram Formation. There is also Teragram and Trigram which correspond with how many inner circles it makes up.

(http://th00.deviantart.net/fs36/PRE/i/2008/254/b/8/Magic_Circle_by_Kohalu.jpg Something like this but with 5 circles instead of six)

After measuring my bullets he went about how to draw the circles on them and so he made the circle on the casing, which fly with the bullet as the mana source.

To draw the circle it turns a 50 mana point bullet into a 500 mana point bullet as such it has an annoyingly long charge time. I could make 2 at a time and it took about 3 minute each. This was strictly a one use thing which I needed a team for. I would be unable to attack my opponent while I charged so I needed others to distract them as well as seal his movements so that the attack will hit properly.

After 9 minutes I was finally done. The bullets were now 3 fire bomb spells and 2 dark flame. The last bullet was a pure mana bullet with engravings for a massive circle which will link the 5 other spells.

Baal: Guys I’m ready.

Kitsu: Finally. Rook Lets trap him.

The two started casting spells. The Silverback was at its edge and roared in anger as the two started up again. But the spells were quick to cast.

Kitsu: “Hell Chains”

Rook: “Infernal Chains”

Many chains appeared from the ground and wrapped around the ape. The Hell flames grabbed a hold with a firm grasp around him while the Infernal Chains dug in with long knives and dragged him to his knees. The combination immobilized the monster.

I aimed my gun down while I flew from above and the first 3 shots that went out were the firebombs. They all had delays in them so it wouldn’t activate instantly. The five bullets together would make a star shape when they link within the circle of the final circle. The firebombs took the spots of the legs and head and the dark flame took the spot of the arms. Each shot created a circle a meter and a half in diameter.

When I shot the final bullet it went right behind the beast and opened a huge circle encasing all the other smaller ones.

I flew down and landed outside of it and I began feeling something. I heard a name and a chant. I began saying it while holding my hands towards the Silverback.

“The Black Flames of hell. The Raging Flames of man. The Wrath of the Flames that Consume Man, Beast and Demon. Flare up and Consume one more.” [Nightmare Inferno]

As soon as I finish the chant the entire circle grew bright. Suddenly Black fires rose from the circle in the same of Humanoids, Beasts and Demon. Their eyes glowing red with hunger and rage. At the center the Silverback began to tremble in fear. She struggled hard and broke the chains holding him and jumped away. All the human shaped ones all grew Red with rage as he ran and let out wails of rage and all the Fire spectra chased the Silverback.

Kitsu: I...have never thought...such scary flames existed.

Baal: Neither did I.

The rage behind the flames continued as the gained on the beast and soon they caught him. Seeing his demise he turned around and tried to fight only to have his arm grabbed by a demon. The black flame opened its jaws and chomped down on his hand. The others grabbed onto other parts and started to eat him alive.

I, who was still a little over 3 years old even though my body looked over 18, couldn’t stomach the scene started to vomit. I was used to blood since I have hunted animals since I was really tiny but to see a monster being eaten alive while it roared in pain. I was certain this would cause anyone, no matter how experienced they were, to return their breakfast.

No matter how much his body was eaten he would roar more and after 15 excruciating minutes the flames ate the last bits of his body. The moment it ate the last piece all the flames gathered in the center of the magic circle. A moment later bright light within the flames start to gather at the center.

It kept gathering until it was about the size of an orange. The circle started to vanish and the fire died down. As the last bit vanished we saw two things within the fire.

One was the Silverback still chained down as if it was never eaten alive and in front of it a perfectly spherical crystal that shined like the rainbow.

Baal: Umm...it wasn't just me that saw him get eaten right.

Kitsu: I saw it as well.

Rook: I saw as well.

Baal: They why is he still hear?

*DING*

You gained a new skillMultigram Magic Circle Formation

A newly rediscovered art. By combining several magic circles within a larger one you can create unknown spells with miraculous or horrendous effects.

Possible Formations:

Trigram (3 Spell Combo)

Tetragram (4 Spell Combo

Pentagram (5 Spell Combo

Nightmare Inferno

“The Black Flames of hell. The Raging Flames of man. The Wrath of the Flames that Consume Man, Beast and Demon. Flare up and Consume one more.”

You call upon the flames of gluttony. These flames rise from the depths of the deepest parts of hell and to consume the very soul of whole ever should be the target. They will follow him to the edge of the world until he is caught.

As soon as the spell is cast an illusion is cast which separate the soul from the body of the target. When the soul is consumed the flames gather the soul within a crystal which holds the soul.

Mana cost 3000 mana (500 each bullet)

Spell can't be cast again for 1 month

Overheat of you gun. Can't use it for 1 week

User will suffer 1 week of Nightmares

Creates a soul crystal if the creature has a soul large and powerful enough to form one

(just a note lack of sleep causes other effects as does fear)

I stared wide eyed at the messages.

Baal: What we saw was an illusion. The flame creatures ate the Silverbacks soul.

Kitsu: What a horrible way to die. I can’t help but pity him.

I pull out a blank page and start drawing. Dok had asked me if I ever make a multigram circle for me to draw it so he can make a list. After 15 minutes I was done and after storing it inside the book I went over and picked up the soul crystal. The body of the Silverback was still their.

Soul Crystal

Craft material

A crystal made from the consumed soul of a powerful monster. This crystal holds the remnants of his soul and well as his mana well.

If mana is fed to this it will be able to store the mana.

This crystal can be used as a magic regent

Mana capacity 3000

Baal: This thing holds mana. Its enough for me to cast the spell I just did. I feel like its lacking in capacity for a level 500 monster.

Kitsu: If you think of it as not being a magic using monster its understandable.

Rook: Monster is stronger than me. Would die if alone.

Rook spun his drill horn in rage to vent.

Baal: Calm down Rook. Its like Rachet always says. “There is always someone stronger in the world”

He looks at me and nods before calming down. We butchered the Silverback for the hide, claws, fangs and meat. Its great that large boss monsters don't vanish like normal lesser creatures, you can remove so much more from them.

We had moved a bit far from our original location so we went back. The camp was obviously trashed from the Silverbacks entrance but nothing was broken or stolen.

I picked the bags and stuff and packed everything.

Baal: There should be a town after this forest so lets get to it and then we can take a day off to rest after this fiasco.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

They both nodded. We were tired since we were woken up in the middle of the night.

It took 2 hours of travel to finally leave the forest. I cast the illusion spell on Rook and Kitsu hid his tails again. Forest was on a large hill we saw and down below we could see the town. It had a low stone wall and nice stone paved streets crossing the town and continues on.

Kitsu: Finally. Lets go so we can get some sleep.

With a powerful jump Rook jumped forward towards the town.

3rd PoV

The town was called Gilead. It was a growing town that attracted high level foreigners because it was close to Dusk Glade Forest which is a high leveled forest.

The 10 guards at the gate to the south, which leads to the forest, all had bord faces. Little actually happens ever since the foreigners appeared. The high leveled monsters which plagued the town were killed and with the drop in numbers the receded deeper into the forest and normal animals began appearing. The town started to grow thanks to the possibility of hunting normal animals and soon the town began developing. Today it was peaceful to the point that it was boring.

Half the guards were sitting what the rest stood in their positions. Watching the newbie foreigners who started to appear a few weeks ago.

One of the guards sitting down was looking out when he noticed something. Two somethings actually. One was a large bulky ball of fur flying towards the town and the other was a lean orange animal running just behind.

Guard: WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!

All the guards looked and soon paled when they saw the over sized animals. With a loud crash Rook landed on the ground coming to an instant stop which left his paw prints deep in the road. The 10 guards had their weapons drawn but their faces were pale. In front of them was a huge Trihorn Drill Rabbit. A top tier monster which is called the pinnacle of power because a rabbit has to let go of its peaceful nature and grow by hunting its hunters.

Just as they were going to attack one of them noticed someone on its back.

Baal: Hey guys don't worry about him he is peaceful.

Baal jumped off his back as Kitsu reached them.

Kitsu: Damn it Rook don't run off so fast like that.

Baal: Stop bickering it will attract more attention than we already have.

All the guards were slack jawed. It’s known that monster “can” gain the ability to talk like humans but no one knows how it happens or what the conditions are.

From the guard house a woman came out. She looked to be in her mid thirties and it was clear she had experience with the spear she had resting on her shoulders.

Woman: What's all the noise. Hmm A beastmaster how rare.

Guard: Captain Adele. This man just appeared.

Adele: I can tell that. Boy what's your name.

Baal: Baal, This is Kitsu he is a fox if you can't tell and this is Rook.

Adele: Were did you tame a drill rabbit.

Baal: I was born in Hasona and grew up near the outer perimeter of the town and me and my sister caught a pair of rabbits. To help our mom even when we were tiny we took our rabbits to hunt so she wouldn’t overwork herself. Our companions grew strong from that. As for Kitsu I got as a present from my uncle.

Adele: Well that explains how they got so strong. Well the rule is that monsters can't enter the town.

Rook: Who are you calling a monster.

When Rook talked she was taken aback.

Baal: Sorry but they aren’t simple animals plus they were normal animals like those. If I remember right they are allowed into town so tamed animals of that origin are allowed in the town.

Adele looked at me from top to bottom then began to laugh.

Adele: You got me their. Though if they cause trouble its on your hands. Boys you can let them in.

Baal: Is their a place that animals can rest.

Adele: Well the horse stable is just over their to the right but I don't know if it’s a good idea.

Kitsu: We can stay outside if you want.

Baal: No way. After having that Silverback attack us I don't want to risk another monster coming to kill you guys.

At the mention of Silverback.

Adele: H-hey how did you survive an attack of the Silverback?!

Baal: Hmm we fought back of course. It took us from midnight to sunrise to finally kill him and we were really beat up. I know some healing magic so we healed up but we are dead tired after travelling 2 hours from the spot we camped.

Adele: Pfff ahahaha you expect me to believe you killed the Silverback. First off its a level 500 monster. Second its extremely hard to find it and even harder to keep track of it in the forest.

I pulled its pelt out which I had strapped to Rook since it was huge.

As she examined the pelt her smile slowly vanished and she began sweating.

Adele: Um...What...level are you.

I look at my stats and see I leveled 2 times and was now 32. With 4 rank ups that would be.

Baal: 432. Kitsu is 385 and rook is 370

The guards couldn’t help shake in fear. By now we had also attracted the newbies attention since 2 boss class monsters were right in front of them.

From inside the town I could also see a few heavily armored people looking towards us.

Baal: Can we entered?

Adele: Oh ah ya. I just asked out of curiosity.

I take back the hide and tied it back up and the three of us entered the town. We head to the stable first. The place had many horses of many kind. When we neared the horse all turned their attention to us which caused the stable manager to notice us. He was an elderly man with a gentle aura about him.

Manager: Hello young man. How can this old man help you.

Baal: Well I need a place for these two to rest. I don’t feel its safe to leave them outside of town even if they are powerful.

Manager: Hmm A beastmaster and with such strong ones at such a young age. Come with me we have a stable made just for people with your job. We can't very well leave boss class monsters with our horses.

We follow him to a different building which was nearly double the size of the last one. The inside had many large stables which had a door each to the outside.

Manager: They don't need food right?

Kitsu: If you leave the door open. We can hunt for ourselves.

Manager: Ohoho a speaker thats rare. You're a good breeder for sure. If thats what you want then the price is 1 silver coin per day.

I pull out a single coin and toss it to the manager.

Manager: One day then.

Baal: We are only passing through. We just need a safe rest.

Manager: Attacked on the road huh.

I nod and leave the two.

Baal: Don't cause him or anyone in town trouble. Sir if any foreigners come and attack can you stop them.

Manager: They don't come. This house is hidden by magic and can only be seen if I personally show you.

Baal: Good.

I leave the building and walk back to the main road. With the Silverback hide strapped on my back I look around the town at the villages tailor shops. There were 3. The one near the center of town was the biggest and had the most foreigners working. The other two were further back and had less movement.

I walked into the shop near the center. Like I said there were many people working and shopping. Walking up to the counter I was attended by a girl who took a quick look and her eyes drooped.

Girl: Can I help you?

Baal: Yes, can I speak with the owner or head tailor.

Girl: ...And who are you to ask for Madam Grace.

Baal: I’m no one but an adventurer who got his hands on high quality hide.

Girl: Pff like a low level newbie could kill anything above a wolf.

She whispered to in a low voice.

Baal: Just call her.

Girl: And what if I don’t.

The other tailors were looking our way now.

???: Whats this commotion down here.

Girl: Madam this cocky adventurer that looks to barely pass level 100 says he has high class hides and wants to speak directly to you.

Grace: Hoo move child I’ll deal with him.

Girl: But madam.

Grace: Silence, go practice if you have time to talk.

Girl: Yes ma’am.

The girl glared at me and walked over to a table and started working with the leather their.

The head tailor turned to me then. She was beautiful even though she looked to be in her late forties. He long black hair was tied back and she wore a tailors work close but she held herself like a noblewoman.

Grace: Now boy what is this material you were talking about.

I unstrap the hide which was on my back on top of my backpack.

Baal: Its Silverback hide.

The workshop became silent in an instant. Everyone was looking towards me now. You would probably hear a pin drop by how quiet it was. The calm face of the head tailor was now in a fierce glare as I put the bundle of hide on the counter. She unfolded the huge hide which was it entire body since no pieces were chopped off since I killed it by destroying its soul.

Madam Grace’s hands started to tremble as she looked at the hide.

Grace: How much do you want for it.

Baal: How much does it cost.

She thought a bit.

Grace: 400 gold coins

Baal: Then 800 gold.

Grace: What!

Baal: I’m sure the price you just said was far below the actual price at least by half so 700.

She glared at me then walked upstairs and returned with a large bag which jingled. Tossing the bag at me I caught it and opened and started counting as she collected the hide.

After counting and confirming the it was 800 gold I turn to her.

Baal: Pleasure doing business with you.

I bowed and started walking off.

Grace: Wish I could say that same.

I hear her walking upstairs as I exit.

Baal: That went well, now then those fangs are alchemy goods

The same reaction happened in the potion shop. 20 Fangs I was able to extract and all the claws went 20 gold each. The stored organs especially the heart made a big uproar. The heart went for 130g the rest was around 50g each. Bones they didn't take but the blacksmith did. I had every large bone and only those in the hands and feet I threw away, this brought me a nice 200g for everything. Strong bones can be ground and used as a strengthening agent for armor. All that was left was the meat and that was for me to eat.

Satisfied with my gain I head to a humble Inn and rented a room. The people there were very cortious like talking with a noble... Word must have gotten around that I sold a complete carcase of a silverback. Seems that bastard earned quite the infamy after he settled down here some weeks ago.

I really didn't care since he was dead already but I cant wait to have uncle Michell check that soul crystal out. (A.N. He doesn't like Slade because of the training but the pope and the rest he called uncle like Lilian called Slade)

You probably wondering "Why am I selling and gathering so much money". Two things. 1, I need to buy a LOT of seeds and transport it to Galton and 2 I need new armor. My current armor is for Paladin trainees. I need better stuff for my level. I'm certain it will cost a lot.

The room rented was simple since I was staying for the night. It had a single person bed, a small drawer with a candle. The window allowed the moon light to come in.  Standing at the window I could see a good bit of the street. Being a demon I have better vision than humans and I can clearly see the humans hiding in the shadows in front of the inn.

Baal: I guess becoming rich so quickly I wouldn't escape the eyes of the greedy. Here he comes.

He ran quickly into the alley next to the inn. I turned into my demon form and readied my scythe then used my [Shadow Cloak] spell and hid in the shadows.

A few moments later the thief quietly and slowly opened the window. Slowly and stealthily he came in and looked around.

Thief: Wha? Where is he?

He said in a quiet voice. I left the shadows behind him and slid my scythe quickly in front of his neck.

Baal: Looking for someone.

The man became as pale as a ghost. Thieves specialize in stealth so for someone to sneak up on them. Well he knew he was dead.

Thief: Hehe You c-can kill me but I’m a foreigner. I’ll hunt you done. Hehehe HAHAHA *Shing*

Pulling the Scythe I cleavered his head like a guillotine. His body fell down and turned into grey mist leaving behind a nice pair of daggers.

Baal: Today was a good day. Some annoyances from these stupid foreigners but still successful.

I close the window and draw a trap magic circle which held the spell [Hell Chain]. It was placed right under the window and door which I locked. If someone was stupid enough to enter this room without knocking then they would get caught. Obviously as a magic circle trap after I lay the trap it vanished as it hid itself. I then took the blanket and with my shadow cloak spell cast I slept in the shadows away from the bed where anyone would normally think someone would sleep.
