Chapter 3- The Girl Who Was Considered a Genius

“Good morning everyone. Today will be our official first day of class. Our first lesson will be about magic. In the past, magic didn’t exist until one day a girl discovered she had magic powers. Now, many years after that, magic is found in everyone...”

Teacher continued on with her lesson, but I dozed off. I already knew most of this from the book mother bought for me. Anyone would get bored hearing the same thing twice.

“...We will be testing everyone for their magical talent with this,” she says as she points to a dark crimson orb to her left.

Ah, finally something I’m interested in!

“This orb is called the Magic Power Measuring Device. The name is a little long, so we just shorten it to MP Device.”

It’s finally the time to show everyone my prowess! I’m excited!

But… only having one MP Device seems inconvenient. It’d be faster if we had more of them, but they’re probably expensive. Having one MP Device will mean showing our magic power to everyone present… looks like we’re being put in a difficult position.

Why does my stomach hurt? I wonder if I have to go to the bathroom again?

After her explanation, the class gets rowdy. It looks like everyone is excited. Well, who wouldn’t be? Being a high-class magician is anyone’s wet dream even in this time, where magic is common.

“To be fair, let’s go in the order of our class roster. First up is… Sia Analie. Everyone, watch closely how Sia-chan does it so that you can do it correctly when it’s your turn okay?”

I’m the first one? It’s true that I’m pretty excited to know how much magic power I have, but nobody likes to be first.

Well, if it’s going to be like this then I might as well show everyone what I'm made of!

Let's go, Sia!

I stood up and walked to the front of the class where the orb was placed. Everyone's stares were on me again. It's the beginning of the year and yet I keep finding ways to attract attention to myself.

"To measure your magic power, place your hand on the MP Device. Afterwards, the device will do the rest."

"L-like this?"

When I put my right hand on the orb, it lit up from its dark crimson color to a bright red.

"Oooooo."

The class was amazed when the orb lit up, like they had seen fireworks for the first time.

On the orb were 3 digits which flashed different numbers every second, like a slot machine. After a few seconds, the numbers finally stopped rolling, showing the digits 345.

“The number that shows up on the MP Device is your Magic Power Equivalent. The higher the number, the more magic affinity you have.”

...Is my Magic Power Equivalent high? Since I’m the first one up, it’s hard to tell. Seems like we’ll have to wait for my classmates to get measured before we can get an accurate view on how high my equivalent is. My classmates were whispering to each other. They were probably thinking along the same lines I was.

“Teacher, is Analie-san’s Magic Power Equivalent high?”

“No need to be impatient. How about we test a few more people before deciding whether Sia-chan’s MPE is high or not?”

“Okayyy!”

“Then, next will be A-kun. A-kun, please come up here to test your MPE.”

“Yes!”

When A-kun went to the front of the classroom, the number that was displayed on the orb was 58.

“Ah…”

“Don’t be discouraged, A-kun. While this number may be low right now, it still has the potential to grow.”

“Thank you, Teacher…”

----------------------------------------

After the rest of the class got their MPE’s tested, we were able to get the gist of the average MPE.

While there were some who had equivalents lower than others, and some higher than others, the average seemed to be around 100-150.

Honoka’s equivalent was 209, Miu’s was 120, and Kyoko’s was 48.

“As you can see, the average MPE is around 100. Since Sia-chan’s equivalent is quite high, she has a big chance of getting into a magic school. People who have their MPE over 300 are in the top 5% range. This doesn’t mean that you can get cocky though, because the highest measured equivalent in the world was a record-breaking 679!”

Putting aside Teacher’s last sentence… I did it mother! I’m talented! Mahou Shoujo here I come!

“Amazing, Sia-chan! You’re like a genius!” said Honoka.

Everyone is talking about me… Hehehe… Be lucky that you were once in the presence of Sia-sama, the legendary genius!

“Now that we’re done measuring everybody’s MPE’s…”

“Teacher, Cana-san still hasn’t got hers measured yet!” says a random boy in the back.

“Oh dear… why didn’t you say something? Come up here, and we’ll get your MPE measured, okay?”

“...”

With no response, Cana goes up to the front of the room.

Huh… that’s the lonely girl that I saw yesterday. It seems that she’s the shy-type. That type is a little troublesome.

“No need to be nervous. Put your hand on the orb.”

“...”

With no reply once again, Cana slowly puts her hand on the orb.

Just like every other time, the digits roll and takes a few seconds to come to a stop. Now let’s see how talented you are in magic, Cana-chan~

…..Eh?

I wipe my eyes once, twice, three times to see if something has gone wrong with my vision or if I had been hallucinating, but there’s no doubt about it.

The number “999” was brightly displayed on the red orb.

The room had gone deadly silent for who knows how long. Even the teacher was shocked. Everyone in the class came back to their senses when a girl asked a question,

“Teacher, didn’t you say that the highest equivalent was around 600? Why is Cana-san’s so high?”

“I think the MP Device may have malfunctioned. It’s strange though… It was working perfectly before, and I’ve never heard of a case such as this. I wonder what happened?”

“S-sorry… I broke it...” a small voice could be heard.

“Honestly, these things are expensive, but it’s not your fault. It’s probably the fault of the manufacturing company. That’s why, there’s no need to worry about it, uhmmm…… Esta-chan. I’ll get another orb so we can properly see your MPE, okay?”

“...”

When the Teacher leaves the class for a few seconds, the students talk amongst themselves.

“Did you hear Teacher? She said this has never happened before! What do you think happened?”

“It’s obviously the fault of the company who made it! There’s no way anyone could have that much magic talent, even for geniuses.”

“But what if it’s not the company, and Cana is really that strong?”

“Uwahhh… what a monster…”

After what seems to be five minutes, Teacher comes back into the room with another orb. The whole class silences once she reenters the room.

“Ah, the teacher from next door is letting us borrow their MP Device. Isn’t that nice, Esta-chan?”

“...Yes…”

“Now, put your hand on the MP Device just like last time.”

For a kindergarten class, it was eerily silent, with nobody daring to make a sound or bat an eyelash. The shy girl delicately put her right hand on the MP Device, and the seconds that it took for one number to pop up seemed like hours.

Once again, the bright number “999” covered the cherry red orb.
