106. The trap called Avalon

106. The trap called Avalon

Lord Blair was particularly happy to see that young Ban was still alive. The Cridian's army valiantly scaled the walls, eventually following the path shown by their vanguards. The battle was intense on the walls, but the exhausted forces pushed bravely forward. Fornal Ban and the younger captain were chatting in the nook of the wall, already taken in by the Cridians. Blair immediately dispatched his people to relieve exhausted soldiers so they could rest.

"Ban! You are alive!" Blair beamed a smile. "How have you managed to get this far?"

"Somehow..." Ban replied without a smile and just slightly nodded. He looked at his soldiers, who were gathered near Lord Blair’s command team.

"We were sure that you were gone! King Korkas was furious that you abandoned your supply mission." Blair relaxed, but something in the gazes and appearances of the two men was not right.

Whatever it was, it left Blair's mind as soon as the dungeon monsters retreated, lessening the pressure on the assaulting army. Before the old lord managed to give any further orders, he glanced at the four soldiers from Girsion approaching them.

"In the name of King Theon Avalon, I arrest you all." Ban declared, looking coldly at the lords in front of him.

Lord's Blair heart sank as he realised they were betrayed by the very soldiers they all rushed to save. Anger filled his veins as he pulled out the summoning crystal and yelled at the traitor.

"You will die for this! I summon thee, Salamander!" Blair watched with satisfaction as a lesser dragon emerged from the smoke of summoning. "Why Ban? Why have you betrayed us?!"

His summoned creature finally solidified and roared at his former friend. The salamander was a large creature easily reaching one and a half meters tall and ten long with its tail. It was able to spit the fire as its more noble kin, but was unable to fly. Its red and gold scales shined dimly as it started preparing its attack. Lord's Blair salamander was level 55, making it a quite formidable foe. Fornal Ban simply took out his sword and with a single hit he decapitated Blair's summon. The cold sweat ran through the old lord's backs.

"Please, retain some dignity, Lord Destra Blair." Ban cleaned and sheathed his sword, looking at the old Lord. "You are the only person in the Cridian Army that is still worthy of my respect, Lord Blair."

"Why? Why have you sided with the dungeon?" one of the lords who had already been cuffed by Drake's soldiers yelled at them.

"Because Cridia is corrupt and its rulers serve the dark gods," Drake responded with a very serious look on his face.

"Shut up, you commoner!" another lord yelled.

"A commoner? That's funny." A voice carried by the wind filled the air just before a majestic figure appeared. "What if I tell you that you are less than a commoner, you worm?"

Every Cridian soldier stood in awe and immediately dropped to their knees as Zephyr appeared near Ban and Drake, who simply bowed to him and were able to stand freely. Blair's eyes went wide in shock, but he couldn't deny that right in front of him was standing the God of Winds in person.

"So what makes you think you are better, you worm?" Zephyr addressed the grovelling lord, who pressed his face to the stone floor in front of Zephyr and Drake. "It happens that I was a witness to Major-General Fornal Ban and Colonel Nathaniel Drake's elevation to noble status. I was one of four deities who blessed their entire lineage and future successors. So tell me, Lord Askna, just who is a commoner now?"

The terrified noble was shaking in fear but at the same time, Blair, still sweating profoundly, started crying. It was not in fear, but pure horror.

"The gods have turned from us," Blair declared. "But why? We served our Queen diligently, we fulfilled our duties..."

"You served evil, young Blair," Zephyr cut off his speech. "Surrender and repent. You can still be saved."

"Surrender! Everyone! I, General Destra Blair, order everyone under my command to surrender!" He yelled and looked straight into the soft eyes of Ban. "Now I understand."

The giants were pleased when the puny mortals started their charge. The scion of mortals that ordered their army to attack here, and they were going to support their kin that was already fighting on the other side. The plan was simple, without any complications, so they followed. The tide of seventy thousand monsters rushed toward the enemy dungeon, ready to crush it. Some of them would fall, but they would be victorious.

•••

I looked at the monsters who were running towards the ruined gatehouse, avoiding the siege golems. Less than fifty thousand Cridians impressively quickly gathered near Ban's forces, and right now, Zephyr was informing them what choices in life they had.

"Theon, we have enough." I turned around surprised and angry that my wives showed here.

We were standing at the gatehouse to the Middle Castle while behind me the first enemies flooded Zone One.

"Theon, we know that you are concerned and you genuinely care about us. But we are not weak, not anymore." Irene smiled at me. She was wearing her full battle gear and was bathed in golden light. Her Halo hovered above her head, gently casting light and shadows that enhanced Irene's beauty and majestic presence.

Amber and Luna were wearing their armour and war gear as well. The barriers and enchantments that I ordered to be employed in their equipment could rival the barriers of Avalon itself. Yet, I was worried that something could go wrong, but before I could say anything, Hestia showed up as well. I couldn't believe that she was here, in her current state.

"Lord Theon," she started officially as she bowed to me. "Please, allow your Queens to test their powers."

"You know I can't risk their lives?" I asked instead.

Amber looked deep into my eyes. "I’ve known it since the moment you promised to keep me safe back then when I was just Hrrin'a." she smiled as the fields below us started echoing with the sounds of combat and death. "Besides, you are with us. Our Husband, King and Protector."

"Theon, we must know how strong we truly are. If we don't know the limits of our strength, we could easily fall when the time comes for us to defend ourselves. You know that." Luna approached me and looked deep into my eyes, making me sigh.

"All right. But stay with me," I reluctantly agreed, preparing myself to cast my most powerful spells and techniques.

I was about to turn towards the enemy, defeated by the stubbornness of my wives, but I couldn't admit that I didn't understand them. As long as they are with me, everything should be fine. I would feel much better if Stella had already developed a teleportation spell, but my presence must be enough for now. The moment I started turning away, I noticed that Hestia was about to trip. I blinked towards her and caught her delicate body in my arms. She looked at me with a tired face, but her eyes had a joyful spark in them that quickly dimmed as she started crying.

"Hush now. Everything will be alright." I promised, but I felt that she was barely holding on.

"You are a poor liar, Theon." She tried to smile through her tears. "I'm surprised about all of this deception you are capable of."

"I can't lie to people I care about," I admitted, making my wives chuckle. They gathered around us, leaving protection to the Praetorian company that was always following them outside the Palace. After that, they noticed how bad Hestia was and they got serious.

"It's much more pleasant to hear that someone cares about me than I ever wanted to admit. I am getting weaker faster than I expected..." She clenched her fist on the material of my cape. "I am so scared, Theon. Please don't leave me."

"I will not. Never." I shifted my gaze to Irene, who sadly shook her head in denial. There was nothing more she could do to help Hestia.

Amber kneeled near us and looked straight into my eyes. "Theon, help her," she pleaded, but Hestia turned her head towards her.

"I don't dare to accept his help now, Amber." She shivered in my arms, too weak to even stand up. "I envy you, Amber..." she whispered with sorrow and a soft smile.

"Why won’t you dare to accept my help?!" I focused on what mattered now.

She slowly turned her head towards me and we saw the true state she was in as the next of her illusions broke. Irene and Luna cried when they realised that Hestia was dying despite all the efforts they put into saving her. Hestia tried to smile, but I saw how much effort it cost her.

"Sorry, my friends. I never wanted to worry you or be a burden." She outstretched her hand and touched my cheek. "I'm glad I have met you, Theon. Thank you for everything..."

"Hestia! Why won't you dare to accept my help?!" I yelled again, finally getting through to her.

"If I accept your help, twenty million mana crystals in your vault will be destroyed. I can't diminish your power so much, Theon." Her hand started slipping away from my cheek, so I grabbed it. "That mana might save this world..."

"Hestia, I beg you to use it! My skills allow me to buy new ones! I can have as many mana crystals as I want, but I can't bring back my lost friends!" She looked at me in disbelief and closed her eyes.

Her light dimmed, and she felt so light in my arms. Suddenly I felt intense pain and felt a strange emptiness when I realised that Hestia rapidly was regaining her strength. The mana crystals crumbled into dust and vanished from my vault, but she opened her eyes and took a deep breath. Hestia's body regained its strength and once again I felt her powers funneling back to her. Then suddenly she kissed me, shocking everyone around us. When she stopped, she looked deep into my eyes and covered her lips with her fingers. She blushed cutely, but when she spoke, her voice once again was full of life.

"Allow us to be first to congratulate you!" I felt myself blush some as I turned, hearing the happy voice of Zeus behind me. No, it was not that; it was not a simple blush. My face was like a raging fire that was burning from the top of my head down my neck for the first time. Fortunately, I didn't see any obvious smirks on Zeus's face.

"Thank you, brother. But..." Hestia tried to stand up, but she was still too weak. I stood up, still holding her in my arms. "This is embarrassing. It's unbecoming as a goddess, being too weak to even stand on my own."

Hestia covered her red face, but I was not certain if that was because of the reasons she stated. I sighed and looked at Hera and Zeus, who were both happy. With every moment, I felt that Hestia was regaining her strength and her body, maimed by the Void Parasite spell, was healing itself.

"Thank you, Theon, for saving her." Zeus approached me and took Hestia from my arms, who suddenly appeared displeased.

"Calm down, girl. You will have all the eternity to enjoy him," Hera laughed, making Hestia blush even harder and causing my Queens to laugh.

Our happy, yet embarrassed gathering was abruptly interrupted by the loud rumble and flash of the barrier surrounding us. A huge boulder smashed into the gatehouse we were standing on. My embarrassment changed into resentful anger that someone would have the audacity to interrupt such a moment.

"Oh, right. The battle," I recalled, and with an irritated sigh, I nodded towards my three wives. "All right, you can test your powers."

Amber, Irene and Luna stepped towards me and we approached the battlements to see the panorama of carnage below. My forces valiantly faced the invading forces and gave them a beating they never imagined receiving. Legio Aegis was the core of the defences, making the enemy grunts simply vanish. The legion was taking casualties as well, but it was nothing compared to the losses of the enemy forces. So far, the enemy had lost ten thousand soldiers while I hadn't yet lost a third of that. The siege engines and archers on the walls effectively trimmed the tide that stubbornly fought to overwhelm the defenders.

I suddenly felt the incredible pressure of mana, heralding the usage of a grand spell, and looked around. I managed to spot Amber, who raised her slender arm and just snapped her fingers once, creating a click that was audible even over the sounds of battle below. The raging fire vortex swirled in the gap of the wall, melting away anyway inside it. I was still looking at her in disbelief when she winked at me and raised both hands.

"Meteor shower."

The sky above us parted and a large, apocalyptically sized meteor broke through the atmosphere, instantly catching flames in the roar of a sonic boom. In the next moment, I saw the countless cracks on the rapidly breaking rock that split into thousands of shards, showering the entire area and decimating the Mountain Dungeon’s army. The impact craters, left far and wide, marked the places where the enemies of Avalon meet their doom. I was left speechless, feeling so tiny and weak after this display of undisputed might. The enemy forces, however, roared in fury and rushed even faster towards us, once again filling the battle-scared zone.

Irene, however, just laughed and my jaw dropped as she covered the entire zone in the golden light of a gigantic magic circle. The ancient and holy runes, incomprehensible to me, danced over our heads as they crackled with power, promising doom to everything below. The golden circle split into layers of intricate complications, making every enemy look up in despair. Irene raised her staff slightly and lightly tapped the stone she was standing on, creating the purest chime I ever heard.

"Armageddon."

Her clear and calm voice reached every corner of the vast zone we were in, sending shivers down the spines of all who listened. The flash of golden light consumed the world in front of me and my face twisted in pain as I felt the death of thousands of my denizens below. Irene, in shock, looked at me, probably even more surprised than I was, and I heard her whisper "sorry". I just grinned slightly and waved off her concerns. When the light dimmed, we saw a large hole in the ground and nothing more. Everyone and everything in range of Irene's spell just ceased to exist. But it was not over yet.

A few thousand invaders were still outside when Amber and Irene focused on the majority that were inside. Luna closed her eyes and I would have dropped my jaw again, but unfortunately, I forgot to close it after Irene's display. Luna took a step in front of me and suddenly I noticed that she had a second tail. The air surrounding her condensed, and she raised her staff, creating ripples that pulsed forward in all directions... I suddenly was able to pinpoint every single invader without using my internal map. But that was just a prelude. Luna formed a silver magic circle that rivalled the size of the one produced by Irene.

"Moonlight Judgement."

After she uttered those two words, the moon glowed right above her, infusing her with its silver, pure light that looked like water. It rose above her, forming thousands of droplets, and when Luna waved her staff, all of them rushed towards enemies so swiftly they looked like shooting silver beams. All the monsters previously revealed by Luna's spell dropped dead in an instant, the merest of grazes killing them where they stood. It was over before it even started. The terrifying display of my wives' power left us all speechless until Hestia waved her hand and began to yell.

"Aegis!" A sphere of light covered the entire gatehouse. I heard the deep hum and sound of shattering glass when something broke the shield of Avalon, overstrained by Irene's spell.

A large red goblin was standing on the rampart, unable to shatter Hestia's barrier despite his desperate attempts to slam his sword and claws through it. Hestia laughed with delight and stood up from Zeus's arms. She moved toward me slowly, still regaining her strength and intensifying her majestic presence that we always felt around her. But she was changed in the same way that Amber, Irene and Luna had transformed after they became my wives. Zeus and Hera looked at Hestia in shock. But my wives just laughed as they gathered near their newest sister. Their display of might, so strong that its rival had only been seen by this world during the times of Heroes, finally made me admit to myself that I might be too overprotective.

"Theon, finish that thing off." Hestia winked at me, making me sigh, as a brief shiver of panic ran down my spine.

Now you did it, Theon... I shook my head and decided that I would ask questions later. After a simple nod, I took out my sword and looked at the last enemy. A scion? I smiled coldly when I blinked right in front of him, breaking his sword, his armour, and piercing his chest, sparing his heart for a brief moment. I saw the disbelief in his eyes as he coughed blood and tried to pull out my sword.

"Tell your master that I accept his declaration of war." The goblin froze and looked right into my eyes, while his own eyes went wide in shock. But I already moved my hand, splitting the goblin's heart in half, making him slowly crumble into dust. Before his eyes were dimmed by this temporary death, I coldly added. "Tell him that I am coming."
