Locusts in Alaska: Chapter 15: Ramona the Barbarian

As they rode the dog sleds through the snowy terrain of Alaska, the wind howled around Julius and Ramona. Ramona was warm and snug in Julius' arctic coat, while Julius shivered uncontrollably as the cold seeped into his body.

Despite his discomfort, Julius had been patiently teaching Ramona magic for the past few hours. Although she had displayed impressive nature magic the previous night, she seemed to struggle with any other type of magic.

"I don't understand this," Ramona said in frustration.

"I don't understand you," Julius replied, a hint of frustration in his voice. "You have an innate talent for nature magic, but anything else seems to be beyond you."

"Hey, that's not fair," Ramona protested. "I just started learning magic, like, yesterday."

A goofy smile spouted on her face.

"That's pretty cool when you think about it," she muttered.

Julius let out a sigh, his breath frosting in the cold air.

"I guess when you put it like that, your progress is only slightly below average," Julius said, smiling.

Ramona flipped him off.

When they finally arrived at the site where the researchers had been running their experiments, Ramona had managed to create a tiny flame on her finger.

Soon enough, they were approaching the entrance of the mines. Julius felt at ease with their picturesque surroundings. The snow-capped mountains reached for the sky, their tips just touching the clouds. The trees surrounding them were coated in a layer of freshly fallen snow, which glistened like diamonds in the sunlight. For a moment, he considered just sitting down and enjoying the view.

But that moment was shattered as they came upon the cave entrance. The beauty of their surroundings died, and even the sunlight seemed a little darker, a little colder. The mouth of the cave was littered with high-tech equipment, probably a mobile lab. The metal frames and cables were twisted and tangled, resembling a spider's web. The machinery was torn apart, its metal parts lying in haphazard heaps on the ground.

Julius felt a chill run down his spine as he surveyed the scene. The snow was painted red with bloodstains in a haunting quality that he was all too familiar with. What might have once been a pristine cave entrance was now a gruesome crime scene, and Julius couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

"What the hell happened here?" Ramona asked, breaking Julius out of introspection as she turned to face him.

"I'm hoping it was those creatures on the camera," Julius replied,

"Lurkers," Ramona corrected.

"Ug," Julius snorted in derision.

Seriously, she was still insisting on calling them that? Julius reminded himself to put fate magic under the topics she needed to learn about.

"Hey, Oak," He called out

"Yes sir," Oak said, standing at attention.

"Get the C4 and plant it at the entrance," he ordered. "And see if you can find any other maps of the inside of the mines. If we fuck it up, I'd rather have this contained."

"Understood, sir," Oak said.

Ramona followed Julius as he led their group into the mine. All of their guns were drawn as they descended, their footsteps echoing against the slick, uneven walls. The cave walls glistened with a delicate sheen of moisture that seemed to pulsate in the dim light of their flashlights.

As the group descended deeper, Ramona's nerves began to jangle like a set of wind chimes caught in a storm. The air grew colder and damper, and the darkness loomed over her like a never-ending abyss.

One by one, the wolves transformed into their werewolf forms, and Ramona's heart raced with a mix of dread and anxiety. She could feel the tension in the air building like a pressure cooker, threatening to explode at any moment.

Ramona felt a shudder run down her spine as the group braced themselves for the horrors that may lie ahead. She bit her lip, holding back her fear and inquiries as her mind raced with questions and doubts. The unknown felt like a heavy weight, dragging her deeper into the abyss with nothing but her own thoughts for company. The damp cave began to even out into a more spacious area when Oak suddenly spoke up.

"Hold it," he said, signalling for the group to stop. His nose twitched as he sniffed the air. "I smell something. Like rotting seafood."

The team came to a halt, their weapons at the ready, their eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of danger.

For a long second, nothing happened. The team just held their weapons at the ready, sweeping their flashlights across the cave as they searched for hidden enemies. For a second, Ramona relaxed, only for the tight tunnel around them to disappear.

The cold and claustrophobic space was suddenly replaced by a massive cavern. A sickly green mold covered the walls, and a massive chasm cut the room in half, light and plant life emerging from its depths. And suddenly, they were surrounded by dozens of Lurkers.

"I fucking hate illusions," Julius swore.

The hulking form of the Lurkers that had been hiding all around them launched themselves at them, claws and tentacles extended as they unleashed a horrendous screech. Ramona found herself completely frozen as one of the Lurkers lunged for her, its claws outstretched, its tentacles wiggling in anticipation as it closed in on her.

"Move!!" Dick roared as he knocked her out of the way.

She fell to the ground, her mind jumping-starting just as Dick was tackled by the Lurker, its claws digging into his chest as he saved her.

"DICK!!"

Ramona started to get up to try and do something, anything, when another Lurker lept at her, its clawed hand wiping down to strike her head. She had no time to think, so instead of thinkingโ€ฆ she just reacted. Less than a second before the hand smashed into her head, she rolled out of the way.

There was a splitting crack as the clawed hand embedded itself in the stone. The Lurker tried to pull its hand free, only to discover it was stuck. Leaping to her feet, Ramona charged forward. She kicked the Lurker in the head. The kick had enough force to dislodge the Lurker's hand, sending the monster tumbling backwards. Blood, or at least she thought the blank ichor dropping from its head was blood, dripped into its large alien eye.

At the very same time, the second Lurker closed in on her, its tentacles shooting toward her like cobras.

Ramona's instincts kicked in, her body moving with an almost supernatural grace as she deftly evaded the second Lurker's tentacles. Time slowed as she lunged to the side, her nimble maneuver narrowly escaping the serpentine appendage by mere inches. Yet, her respite was short-lived, as a searing pain erupted in her side like she had just been burned. Her eyes widened in shock as she glanced down, witnessing the ghastly sight of the creature's serrated clawed hand penetrating her flesh. Pain engulfed her being as each agonizing movement of the Lurker's arm caused the claws of the monster to slice through her body, going deeper and deeper.

"Get away from me!!" she screamed.

Summoning every ounce of determination as she swung her fist with all her might, the force behind her strike knocking the Lurker back. The resounding impact sent the creature hurtling backward, its carapace cracking under the ferocity of the blow. However, the first Lurker seized the opportunity, lunging at Ramona in a frenzy. Its vicious claws tore through her arm with merciless precision, shredding flesh and unleashing a tidal wave of excruciating pain that threatened to overwhelm her as she ground her teeth.

As she stood there just for a moment in pain and agony, it was as if she could feel her entire body with perfect clarity, the beating of her heart, her shallow breathing, the burning agony where the Lurkers had attacked her, her hot blood dripping down her side, and the goosebumps on her skin.

And then suddenly, she could feel her mana rising up like a flash flood filling her with energy and power. She had been able to feel it just a little when Julius was teaching her. But now it roared to life like a hurricane. And just like that, the world around her sped up again. She unleashed her magic on the Lurkers without direction, only her bloodlust to guide the spell. Blood-red vines started to sprout out of the Lurker's head injury. The vines quickly started to flay the skin off of the monster, allowing them more room to grow.

The Lurker screamed in what she could only assume was utter agony as was eaten alive. It rushed at her in a frenzy, its clawed hands swinging for her wildly as it attempted to disembowel her. She tried to jump backwards, to get away from the monster, when she tripped, falling backwards.

She winced as she fell on her butt. She looked up, ready for anything but froze. She had tripped on one of the lycans. He was dead. His chest had been ripped open, and his insides scooped out like some horrific game of operation.

Time seemed to stand still as the ghastly image seared itself into her brain, etching itself with unforgiving clarity. She could feel panic welling up inside of her, an irrational unforgiving panic that made her want to turn around and run away, away from the monsters, away from the BPA, away from Julius. He was dead. He had died. The Lurkers had killed him. The Lurkers could kill her. She could die.

The thought wouldn't leave her. Instead, it ran through her mind over and over again like a broken record. The world around her suddenly felt dull and fragmented, as if shrouded in a haze of unreality. Her eyes widened as she looked around. Everywhere she looked, she saw the wolves getting attacked, their bodies torn into as many of them fought the Lurkers with tooth and claw after being disarmed. Dick had a half dozen Lurkers tearing him apart as their claws ripped into him.

Time seemed to slow, as if caught in a suspended state, while she struggled to comprehend what she was seeing. They were losing, they were going to die, and once again, she was powerless to stop it.

"no," she whispered.

Her head hurt, and her thoughts were a jumbled mess of sheer terror, helplessness and a profound sense of self-loathing. Her body trembled involuntarily as the Lurker charged her, its claws extended, ready to end her.

"No," she said

She hated this. She hated feeling afraid. She hated feeling vulnerable. She had felt like that all her life, and now, despite everything she had gained, she was back to being helpless? No โ€ฆ she refused. She would not go back to that, not now, not ever! Suddenly she was angry, no scratch that she was pissed. Her fury bloomed inside her consuming her fear and self-loathing as she stood.

"NO!!" She screamed in frustration and rage.

With a primal roar, she launched herself forward, her super strength propelling her upwards as she smashed the Lurker in front of her. For a moment, they clashed against each of its claws, slicing at her arms before she sent it crashing to the ground with the force of her charge. She barely even acknowledged the injury. Instead, she stomped on the monster's head over and over again as if she were trying to smash her own fears. She could feel her muscles bulging, her veins singing with adrenaline.

With a sickening crunch, the Lurker's head exploded in a slimy paste splattering her legs in gore. Not even acknowledging the filth, she launched herself forward, her super strength propelling her toward the second Lurker. She could hear Julius shouting something at her, but at the moment, she didn't care. She refused to be weak again.

With a sickening crunch, she landed on the Lurker, the force of her landing crushing the monster like a literal bug under her feet as she slammed down on top of it. Her fists connected with its exoskeletons over and over again as she pounded on its chest until her fist shattered the hardened exoskeleton blood and viscera sprayed in all directions covering her body, but she didn't care. It was exhilarating.

As she turned to face more of the creatures, she could feel her body pulsing with energy. Her senses seemed to have heightened to a fever pitch. She was a killing machine, and she wouldn't stop. She couldn't stop.

Charging forward again, she smashed through the Lurkers with ease, sending them sprawling across the cavern floor. With each blow, she felt more and more alive, her body singing with the thrill of the fight.

She felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins, her heart racing as she prepared to launch herself at the Lurkers.

With a savage roar, Ramona charged forward, her superhuman strength propelling her towards the Lurkers. As she closed in, she could feel her mana roaring in her veins. Blood vines and death blooms were already sprouting from the Lurker's corpses as she savaged the monsters' bodies. Blood and gore spattered everywhere as the Lurkers' bodies were literally ripped apart by her onslaught of magic and fists.

It was a brutal and savage display of strength, a sight that would have made even the most hardened warrior tremble in fear. But Ramona felt nothing but fury and anger and fear, driving her onward to kill them before they killed her. With each blow she struck, she felt more alive, more powerful, more in control of her destiny, like nothing could stop her.

Ramona smirked as she easily dodged one of the monster's claws before leaning in and punching the monster with enough force to shatter its arm. Before the next monster could even react, she brought her arm around in a hammer blow motion popping its head clean off.

The other monsters tried fighting back, but Ramona killed another one, followed by another and another. The poor beasts were only able to flail around in a vain attempt to hold her off as she slaughtered them. She didn't know how long she fought or how many of them she killed. All she knew was that she was still standing. She had survived.

She stood atop a mountain of corpses covered in her blood and the black ichor of the Lurkers as basked in her victory.

"Still think she doesn't belong?" Dicks voice echoed through the chamber.

"Alright, she's a monster," Julius admitted

A radiant smile graced Ramona's face as she turned to face them, a mix of joy and relief at their survival. And her heart only swelled further as she discovered the surviving wolves standing strong behind them. The euphoric sensation coursing through her veins only intensified, causing her smile to widen even further. In the midst of the chaos, her words carried an unmistakable delight, her voice filled with triumphant exhilaration as she finally.

โ€œI won,โ€ she said before everything went black.
