Chapter 46- Kronos’s Keep

Morpheus checked his map, he was on the mountain range south of the forest.

The city wasn’t named on his map so he was curious. Even though he felt slightly anxious going into any city at this point, he really needed something to eat.

He needed a plan so he brought out his notebook and pen.

‘Look for guild- get a well paid job’

‘Boring and plain clothes’

‘FOOD!’

Morpheus tapped his chin with his pen.

‘Find a god to worship, other than Skeggjöld.’ He wrote down.

Morpheus knew Skeggjöld wasn’t a god but to him she might as well be. He wanted a god which aligned with his morals, fitted his personality.

‘Gullible and with a giant bell on his head.’ He thought.

Morpheus didn’t feel so much embarrassment when he thought back to the notes. It was past him and he wanted to change his ways.

He put away his notebook and pen, he tucked his wings in and glided towards the mountain city.

He kept replaying the sight of the enormous wyrm in his mind. The absolute power of it amazed and terrified him at the same time.

The city soon came fully into his view and it was the most fortified one he had encountered so far.

It was in between three mountains, an arched stone bridge led to the city gates. The entire city was a complete circle, with three levels. Each wall got taller and thicker as the levels progressed.

It was surrounded by a complete drop that Morpheus couldn’t see the bottom of. The only way into the city was through the large stone bridge.

He dropped down, well out of view of the city. He changed his face to a random man and his class from chimera to warrior.

The young chimera took a deep breath and started to walk towards the large stone bridge. He focused on Arcane Pulse, trying to find if anyone was spying on him; thankfully, there wasn’t.

He joined the dirt road heading for the city, it was packed with carts and an influx of people. The city was much larger than he initially thought.

As he was shuffling along in the queue he could take a closer look at the city. Stone statues lined the outside of the city, appearing to hold it up. Written in the walls of the city was ‘Kronos’s Keep.’

Morpheus had heard the tale of Zeus killing his father before and he wondered what was beneath the city. To Morpheus it seemed like a stupid idea, placing a titan under a city.

He approached the gate and the same little booth with a bored scribe scribbling down notes was there.

‘Fee-2 Coppers’

“Name and business. Declare any items ye are selling.”

“Jack. Travelling. Not carrying any items to sell.” He lied while dropping two coppers in a bucket.

The scribe didn’t even look up to which he was thankful for.

Morpheus kept his head down as he entered the city. Grey stone bricks were the style, rather fitting since it was surrounded by Mountains. Brown tiles covered the roofs and large chimneys were pumping out smoke. The young chimera saw only a few humans, most of the city's population consisted of merfolk, elves and dwarves.

He had seen merfolk before at the royal coronation but he didn’t really get a good look at them.

They had webbed hands with pointy dark skinned ears. Their faces were a lot larger than his, slightly moon shaped with big eyes but small noses. Morpheus didn’t stare too much since he didn’t want to draw any attention to himself.

Finally he had reached his destitantion. A food stall, the only thing he was looking forward to.

‘Linciln Skewer-2 coppers’

“I’ll take two.” He said to the man and placed eight coppers on his the counter.

The man began preparing his food, Morpheus began to ask questions. He had many, this city was the most unique yet.

“Why’s it called Kronos’s Keep?” He asked.

“Leads down’t Hel.” He replied, with a really strong accent. He was a human, not a dwarf which confused him even more. He brushed the racist thought aside.

“Where are the churches?” Morpheus asked.

“Secon’ level, need’n pay a fee.”

“Does that mean I have to pay a fee or not?” He questioned, not understanding the man at all.

The man shook his head in anger while handing Morpheus his food.

“Guild?”

The man motioned his head to the left, a man of not many words. It reminded him of Nu.

He tucked into the rough linciln meat and headed in the direction the man nodded too.

Morpheus kept his guard up when walking through Kronos’s Keep. The streets were more dirty compared to Southcross and Ervos, rats scuttled in alleyways and the lovely smell of feces filled his nose.

Eventually he had found the guild, the cleanest building in the whole street. It was a boring style, grey stone bricks with a tiled roof like the others.

He walked into the guild, the atmosphere was glum. The usual drunks were at the tables and there was a man playing a guitar in the corner.

(Bard, Sound Infuser, Level 116)

‘Cool title’ he thought. He headed over to the job board and looked over the jobs available.

‘Feed Boris the wyrm. Any colour. Pay- 60 copper.’

Morpheus raised an eyebrow.

“Boris the wyrm, the great protector of Kronos’s keep.” A man’s voice behind him said.

He turned around to see that bard behind him.

“Thanks for the information.”

“You’re welcome, oh boring one.”

“Can you fuck off?” Morpheus asked politely.

“Of course.” The man said with a bow.

He turned his attention back to the board.

‘Exterminate grey goblin hideout. Red or above, recommended Level 100. Pay 2 silver. MORE ADVENTURERS WANTED’

“The ugly grey goblins, nippy bastards.” The bard said behind him again.

“I’m not gonna ask you again.” Morpheus said without turning around.

“Ask me what again?” The bard asked.

Morpheus cracked his knuckles. “Time to try it out.” He said under his breath.

He turned around and stared directly into the bard’s eyes and activated Terrify.

You have levelled up Terrify Level (2)

The bard looked back with bulging eyes, Morpheus was glad it worked.

“That’s a scary skill, tickled my soul.” The bard said with a string of his guitar.

Morpheus shook his head and turned back to the board. He took the goblin job sheet and handed it to the clerk along with his badge. Two silver was a decent amount for a job, especially since he only had a few silvers in his pouch.

“Group leaves tonight at 7.” The old female clerk said.

“Overnight job?” Morpheus asked.

The old lady nodded. “You’ll travel to the edge of their camp and attack in the early morning when they’re asleep.”

“That’s fine.”

The bard came up to him and leaned over his shoulder.

“Good choice oh boring one.”

Morpheus grabbed him by his collar and smacked his head on the counter.

“Again please.” The bard said.

He slammed his head on the counter again, but the bard just smiled.

“Harder, get my nose on it.”

“Hammer you little shit!” The old lady shouted.

“My dear Mary, I’m just having a little fun.”

The old lady rolled her eyes.

Morpheus pulled him back and smacked him in the face. A few of the old drunks turned around and chuckled.

Hammer the bard licked the blood off his chin.

“A fine punch, fit for a boring one.” He said with a hand behind his back.

Morpheus went to punch him again but he ducked under it. The young chimera quickly followed with a kick, catching him in his private area.

“Low blow.” Hammer croaked as he fell down on his knees.

The old drunks cheered and Morpheus walked out with satisfaction.

He crossed out ‘find a job’ in his notebook and went to find a god to worship. Asking around for a library or sorts he was directed to the second level of the city.

He arrived to the entrance of the second level, the walls were 50 metres tall and made from pure stone. It looked almost natural except watch towers were built on top.

Morpheus was about time to climb the stairs when a hand stopped him.

“Reason for entering.” A guard said.

“Library.”

The guard scoffed while looking at his clothes. “Go on then peasant.”

Morpheus smiled but rolled his eyes internally.

Morpheus was directed to a hollowed entrance in a large rock formation. The second level had small clusters of stone dotted around it and many houses were built onto or in one.

He walked in and the sigh was magnificent. It was a huge circular library, books scaled each side and large light crystals hung from the ceiling.

A librarian was writing stuff down at a table in front of him. She tapped the sign next to her without looking up.

‘2 coppers, pay for what you break.’

“Gods section?” He asked her.

“This ain’t a church.” She said, still without looking up.

“History of Gods?” He asked.

She looked up over her glasses. “Fifth floor, section C”

He dropped two coppers into a pot and made his way up a circular wooden staircase.

There were hundreds of books on each floor, and he read as many signs as he could.

‘Empire’

‘War’

‘History of Kings and Queens’

The next floor was packed full of fiction novels.

‘My succubi and me.’

‘Sex with a baby dragon!’

‘All I want is a Princess!’

“Romance novels seem popular.” He muttered under his breath.

He finally made his way up to the fifth floor.

‘History of gods’

He began scanning each one, over half were about Norse mythology which he knew a lot about.

‘Tales of Zeus’

‘History of Greek Mythology’

‘Djinns’

‘Apostles’

‘Forgotten gods’

He picked up the last two, he hadn’t heard of apostles yet and he wanted to learn about forgotten gods. He imagined he might find one that suited his narrative.

‘Apostle are sentient beings that represent a selective god. They are utmost loyal and will do anything their god asks of them. Usually, apostles follow the gods' laws and they rarely intervene with man but they have done in the past.’

‘The most famous event of an apostle intervening was one of Posideons called Jerson Croft. Jerson had grown up in a village near Seaford. He posed perfect water affinity and had achieved water manipulation and creation when he was only ten years old.’

‘He soon disappeared when he reached level 250, where some say he received the Apostle of Poseidon class. This was when the old empire sent their armies to SeaFord.’

‘When the old empire's navy had entered into the view of Seaford. An enormous wave grew from the shore, it was 200 metres tall and spread the width of the island. The wave wiped out their whole navy. The king spread the word that a young man floated on water down at the port. The city believed it was Jerson, for he was already a famous adventurer and it led to speculation he had received Apostle status.’

‘Apostle’s are given a small fraction of their gods' abilities and power. Few people have ever been recorded to have been offered an apostle class.’

He flicked through the book and landed on an interesting chapter.

‘Apostle’s Of Loki.’
