The battle of New York.
It was a war fought between the first Avengers and Loki who led an army of Chitauri. It was the first time the Avengers assembled.
The Earth faced her first foreign invasion that day. The blue planet faced its first higher form of war.
Thanos pondered about the significance of that day for the whole universe. Or should he say the significance of 'today'.
Thanos was currently inside the Chitauri mothership and he was staring out at the never-ending blackness that was space. He was waiting for the portal to open up.
In the original timeline, Thanos had no idea about the significance of Earth. He only knew that the Earth was a backward planet that held the space stone.
He did not even bother going there himself and instead opted to send Loki to fetch the space stone for him. He underestimated the young planet heavily.
..
..
Or at least that's what it looked like. He remembered in his past life that some people argued that Thanos did not invade Earth with full force because he was aware that Earth was under the protection of Odin and the Ancient one.
They said that Thanos was only testing the waters, sending Loki whom he knew Odin wouldn't kill and instead protect form other powerhouse on the planet. It was all just one part of a bigger, more intricate plan.
He didn't know if that was true but it did not matter. Because personally, that was what he believed.
The Mad Titan was a very smart being, no way it was all just by brute strength that he became the most powerful being in the universe. So it must all be a part of his plan, and he struck just when the time was right.
But he was Thanos now, fuck the plan and waiting for the best opportunity to strike. He decided to go to Earth and finish everything as soon as possible.
He saw no point in sending smaller minions just to make the heroes stronger until they became strong enough to fight him. Like some sort of a shounen anime.

He was going to go there himself and end everything. Althoug he won't bring his full army as that might force the stronger beings on the planet to retaliate. He reckoned he alone was strong enough to accomplish his goal.
He had a brief recollection of the strong beings that could act as protector for the planet. The eternals, the Ancient one, the Greek Gods, Wakanda, Captain Marvel, Asgard, a celestial in the planet etc.
And let's not forget about the time travel bullshit that could happen as well.
Many might call him stupid as it should've been wiser to go slow like the original Thanos did. After all, if the original Thanos - who was a genius planner and manipulator - avoided invading Earth instantly and had waited for Odin, the Ancient One etc to die, he should do the same.
But the thing was, the original Thanos did not know that four of the six infinity stones were on Earth.
The mind stone in Loki's scepter. The space stone also known as the tessaract which was on Earth. The reality stone which could potentially be taken in London. The time stone which was with the Ancient one.
Four of the six singularities were on a single planet. That was worth fighting over everything in the universe.
Surely even the Original Thanos would have changed his plan and gone to Earth if he had known.
...
"Ebony." Thanos called as he continued gazing at the infinite emptiness outside the Chitauri mothership.
"My Lord." Ebony came to his side, as his right-hand man, Ebony was always by his side.
"Contact Nebula and order her to come back. She ought be in Sanctuary II by the time I am done." Thanos ordered and Ebony bowed in acknowledgement before he went away again to follow his command.
He stood in deep contemplation, he was in a weird state between extreme anxiety and equal excitement.
"Soon." He mumbled before turning back. His eyes immediately landed on the rows and rows of Chitauri soldiers, their number reached millions as they stood still in perfect stillness.
Yet there was an impending violence in the air.
They were currently at the main hall of the gigantic Chitauri Mothership. The surrounding walls had scaly dark armours as red lines ran across everywhere.
There was a reddish light that gave the bare minimum visibility inside, but Thanos could see perfectly.
He observed the biologically engineered soldiers. They were specifically crafted for war, they only knew mindless violence and how to following orders.
There was nothing else in them. They were hollow beings, one without a soul. Their whole existence was to be the pawns of the army.
They didn't even have a mind of their own as they shared a collective conscious with the mothership. They were more puppets than they were living.
They were armed with futuristic alien technology, but nothing too extraordinary. The main aim of the Chitauri army was not quality but quantity.
Thanos swallowed as he looked at the neatly lined soldiers. Their face and figure was grotesque and creepy, they were like mummified corpses which was not too far from the truth.
Killing half of the population on every planet they visit, it would be a waste to just waste the corpse is it not?
He did not know the exact details but Thanos remembered reading that the Chitauri were made from those billions of corpses.
'So its a zombie army basically.' Thanos mused in his mind.
As he was observing the - alien/ cyborg/ zombie - army, an alarm suddenly rang everywhere in the dim spaceship.
Thanos turned and looked through the transparent wall again and he was no longer greeted with the emptiness of space.
There was a blue portal slowly forming below the ship. The humongous ship also had to be activated as the pull of gravity materialized with the portal.
"It has begun." Thanos said and the Chitauri soldier behind him finally made their move. They cried out and roared as they began getting ready to go through the portal.
Thanos let out dark chuckles but he did not move yet and he just watched the Chitauri army headinging to the portal.

Author : I know that's not how the Chitauri were made but since it was never explained in the movies and MCU was vastly different with the comic when it came to Thanos, I liked this army better.
At least it would explain how someone like Black Widow was able to beat them like cannon fodders as well.
