Thane’s War
“More questions than answers”

“More questions than answers”

The sound of gunfire filled the alleyway. So many rounds went down range that our suppressors kept overheating. I raised my rifle and screamed the order. “Fall back!”. We attempted to retreat in an orderly fashion, but not too long after, the fallback turned into a mad dash out of that killbox. As we ran, Gomez, Doc, Jasper, and Trenton, first squad’s second Fireteam leader were all ahead of me. We turned onto Main Street and began running as fast as we could. Just then, Trenton shouted, “Where are we going?”

“To the church!” I shouted back.

As we ran the entire city began to come alive, what felt like thousands of infected began rushing the streets, all their soulless eyes fixated on us. Soon multiple were ahead of us. I raised my rifle and began shooting ahead of us, this coaxed the rest of the guys to do the same. One after another heads began to pop, arms were blown off my Machine Gun fire, legs snapped, bone shattered as we rushed through the enemy. Then all of a sudden I felt something slam into me as if a linebacker pounded me into the ground. I was luckily able to roll it off of me. As I oriented myself on the ground and raised my rifle to fire. The monster crookedly stood up and contorted to stare at me, it bared its teeth and roared at me as it charged. I fired and “click”. I was out of ammo. Just as it was about to reach me, Jackson shoulder checked the bastard and it flew at least ten feet. He quickly rushed to me and brought me to my feet. As I got up I saw ow rush over and shot the bastard. Jackson freaked out and grabbed my plate carrier pulling me screaming, “Come on we gotta move!” As I ran with the men, gunfire echoed throughout the entire city streets.

“How far is that fucking church?” Jackson screamed.

“Should be a few more blocks more blocks!” As I said this I heard a scream behind me. I turned back to find Miller being tackled to the ground by a BZ. I turned and rushed towards the attacker, but in the confusion, Ackerson slammed into my side knocking us both to the ground. I brought myself back to my feet, but it was too late, Miller’s screams were now muffled as I saw his throat beimy ripped out. I began to zone out. “How could I have let this happen? We are fucked, these men who survived literal world war three are about to die because of me.” I was quickly ripped out of the moment by ackerson grabbing the back strap of my plate carrier and dragging me with him. “Lieutenant! We gotta move!” I stumbled to my feet attempting to continue the sprint. We continued to move for another block and a trail of bodies were riddled around us. We needed to get off this forsaken street. I quickly looked around attempting to find anything we could duck into. I kept seeing multiple houses and shops that riddled the street. I wasn’t sure which to pick. “Fuck it, that one.” I said as I saw a large two story row home. The row home had four windows and was elevated, which was perfect for security. I shouted “Saber Platoon! On me!” As I maneuvered out of the platoon, soon both Jackson and Jasper parroted the order. As I rushed towards the row home, two BZs stood in my way. One was a woman in jogging gear, her soulless eyes completely contrasting from the red stains in her sweatsuit. I raised my rifle and lined up my IR laser with her head. The round hit it’s head and must’ve ricocheted, because the top of her head was shaved off as if I had just seen a recreation of the JFK assassination. I quickly turned and began firing into the farther away BZ. This BZ was wearing an Elkhart Police Department uniform with a riot helmet on. I instinctively put two rounds in his chest, then raised the rifle to his head and pulled the trigger. The plexiglass of the helmet shattered as the round passed clear through. The BZ’s body collapsed as I ran past it. The rest of the platoon close behind. As I began getting closer to the door, I had to make a decision. I barreled towards the door and slammed my entire body into the door. As I did, the door gave way and flew open. As soon as I passed through the doorway my inertia caught up with me, I took two steps then fell to the ground. I took a breath and rushed to get back up, as I did the rest of the men rushed through into the dark building. I stumbled to my feet screaming, “Barricade the door and windows now!”. Jasper and Ackerson rushed the door, which now has BZs moving towards the door. They rushed towards the door, barricading it with their bodies. Suddenly, banging could be heard from the window, then a shatter, followed by groans.

“Corbin! Get that bay window now!” Jasper said, screaming and pointing at the now shattered window. Corbin looked around frantically for anything he could, his eyes lit up as he screamed to Ow.

“Yo Ow, help me with this!” He said as he rushed towards a huge mahogany wood coffee table. He slid his arm across the top of the table clearing it from multiple family pictures and decor as Ow rushed to the other side. As they began lifting it, a behemoth of a BZ that would make any my six hundred pound life contestant blush, began climbing though the window.

“Son-of-ah bitch! Get ya dumb, undead, McDonald’s regular looking ass outa da fucking window!” Smith screamed as he kicked the undead behemoth in the face, causing it to fall backwards into the front lawn. He then leveled his machine-gun on the windowsill and was starting to mow down a large number of BZs. By doing this, he bought Ow and Corbin enough time to bring the table to the window and cover it.

“Hell yeah!” Corbin said.

“Das wha I’m talkin Bout!” Ow responded. As they high fived each other.

“Aw, that's so sweet! Now can someone get something to cover this fucking door!” Jasper screamed as thuds could be heard from the other side as each seemed to slightly stagger the two men holding the door shut.

I was attempting to get my bearings. I quickly shot up and straightened my back. “Jackson take Trenton and Williams and clear the upstairs. Corbin, find something to barricade that door! Doc and Gomez, make sure everyone here is all okay medically. After,I want you two to find either a ladder, fire escape or something to get on the roof. Once we know it‘s safe you’re going to set up the long range Radio. My Short Range can’t reach through to Warchief, we need to get in touch with them asap. Ackerson, when you’re done there, Fall in with Wilson and Tex. You’re gonna be attached to their team now. After that, Jasper! Get your guys on security, if there is even a whole a roach could fit through, I wanna know about it.” I said. I arched my back over, placing my hands on my knees, attempting to catch my breath. The platoon, or what was left of it rather, all agreed and began to move. The room began to sway as I leaned back, as I did, I began to stumble and found myself hitting the wall behind me. I just stood there, my eyes closed as I attempted to breathe. All sound was absent, all I could hear was my heart racing. Suddenly, I was thrown out of it by a hand on my shoulder. I took one deep breath and looked forward. As I did, my eyes met Doc.

“Lieutenant, maybe you should sit down.” He said as his hand tightened on my shoulder.

“I’m fine.” I said with a shrug.

“Lieutenant.” He said with a sigh, “I wasn’t asking.” In a whispered voice. He looked towards Jasper, who was now tightening down a chair against the front door. “Jasper, help me grab the Lieutenant, let’s take him to the kitchen. I need to check his leg.”

“I’m coming!” He moved across the room and put my arm over his shoulder. “Come on lieutenant. I gotcha!”

“Gomez, grab a chair, move towards the kitchen.” Doc said, pointing towards the kitchen door, as he moved with me and Jasper.

“Doc, Issa Cocina! There are probably plenty of silla in there!“ As he rushed towards the kitchen door, but it was locked. “¿Que demonios? Didn’t ackerson just go in here!” He kept pulling as he attempted to open the door. “Uh, Gomez, you need to push the door.” Ackerson said with a snicker as the room began to laugh. “Oh ha ha! Keep laughing at me and Ill quítate los dientes!” As he said this, the door began to open from the other side. No one but me seemed to realize this. “Gomez! Behind you!” I shouted attempting to get his attention. As I spoke, a hand reached out of the darkness, grabbing Gomez, and pulling him into the kitchen. His scream echoed throughout the building.

“What the fuck!” Corbin shot up and rushed towards the door.

Corbin, Doc, Jasper and myself rushed into the kitchen after him. We rushed through the door and saw a dark silhouette grabbing at Gomez as he was hunched over a kitchen table fighting for his very life.

“¡Tú, estúpida perra molesta! ¡Aléjate de mí! ¡Alguien quíteme esta perra de encima!” He shouted as he wrestled to keep the monster's mouth away from him. Corbin reached out as he rushed towards the BZ and grabbing onto its collar, ripped it off of Gomez. We could get a good look at it now. It was a young woman, about five foot five and had long black hair. Mascara streamed down her face. She didn’t have any visual damage on her. She rushed around and went straight at Corbin. He raised his hand instinctively to cover his face. Tooth hit skin as a large stream of blood flew from his hand. “Get off of me!” His voice was one of grit and pain. He threw his hand back and slammed into the bitches face full force. The monster recoiled back and collapsed, Hitting the kitchen table on the way down. It was laying with its back towards us. “What the fuck!” Corbin shouted, gripping his hand in pain. Gomez got up screaming, “What the Hell! What took you all so -long.” His voice became quiet as he looked at Corbin’s bleeding hand. “Corbin, Lo siento mucho. I didn’t-“. Corbin’s eyes widened as he began to stumble backwards and fell into a chair sitting up by the kitchen table. “Fuck me.” Corbin said. Ow and Smith rushed in attempting to figure out what’s happening, but stopped as soon as they saw Corbin.

“Ah, fuck.” Smith said as his shoulders slumped in disbelief. “Carporal, wha happin wich you?” Ow said. “I’m” a short pause. “fine! Don’t worry about me.” Corbin said to ease them both. “Who is watching the front door?” Corbin asked. “Uh, Ackerson and a few others. We only pulled off cuz we needed to make sure yous were okay.” Smith said.

“Where did the fucking thing even come from?” Corbin said.

“Actually, good question! Where did that Bendejo come from?” We quickly looked around a found an open door to what seemed like a cellar. “Ow, Smith. Check that shit out now!” Jasper commanded. The two moved towards the door and started walking down. Shortly after, Jasper grunted.

I turned my head to look at Jasper, his eyes were full of rage and sadness. He was staring right at the BZ. I looked towards the BZ as well. It wasn’t moving, I didn’t think much of it until something crossed my mind. “The BZ in the school immediately got up. This one hasn’t. Is it playing possum?” I thought to myself, suddenly I felt Jasper lower my shoulder and begin moving towards it. I shot my hand out and stopped him. “Wait! Why hasn't it hasn’t gotten up yet?” I said as everyone turned to look at the BZ.

“What are you talking about lieutenant?” Jasper said.

“The one in the office only staggered back when I hit it. This one looks knocked out.”

“Alright!” Jasper said as he grabbed his charging handle and racked a round. I’ll just shoot the damn thing.”

“No! Don’t waste the ammo!” I said.

“Waste the ammo? Are you fucking with me?” He looked at me in disbelief.

“How many mags did you go through in the alley alone?” I retorted.

Jasper reached into his dump pouch and said “Five.” A sigh leaving his lips as he looked down. “I see your point, but what do you want us to do with it?” He asked.

“Step out of the way.” I said as I reached towards my back and grabbed my crowbar. I slowly moved towards the BZ. As I moved towards it, I kicked the things leg to see if it would move. No response. I could feel everyone in the room’s eyes on me. I made my way towards its chest. I took a deep breath and kicked it’s shoulder to roll it over. I rushed down and knelt on its chest. I raised my crowbar to slam directly into its head. As my eyes took a look at the monster, I hesitated. There were no signs of infection. She didn’t have super pale skin, no bites or wounds, and the veins near here eyes weren’t black. “What?” I gasped.

“What’s wrong? Finish the bitch.” Jasper said.

“She’s not infected.” I retorted
