“Come on, stop playing so hard to get. Serenity wouldn’t be acting like this.” The guy’s hand grabbed my thigh. “Don’t you dare touch me! Ugh!” I shouted as my hand slammed into his face. “If you want some action go ask the human flesh light that Serenity “Cumguzzler” Cantly! It’s over, Brad!” I stormed off in my prom dress. I move across the dance floor to see a young man in an elegant suit sitting down at a table towards the back of the room. I walk over, even as my friends call me from across the room. I walk around the table and sit down next to him. I hit the chair and put my hands to my head.
“Brad troubles?” The guy asks.
I flail my arms down. “Don’t start Jason!” I retorted. A hand landed on my shoulder. “Jules, don’t let a brainlet like Brad Norrigan ruin your night. You’ve been so excited for prom all year.” Jason said with a calm and caring voice. “God, why couldn’t you have just been a man and asked me, this whole situation would’ve been avoided.” I think to myself as he talks.
“Yeah, well, if prom is so important to you, where is your date, Romeo?” I say in a snarky, yet playful voice.
He kicked back in his chair, lifting his soda to take a drink. As he does he points his index finger towards the dance floor. I look to find his date dancing with two guys. “She ditched me about ten minutes after pictures. Apparently I was her “safety” choice for her parents.” He sets down his drink.
“Damn, that sucks. Tonight isn’t going well for both of us, huh.” I say as I rest my head in my hands. “This just sucks.” I say as I become depressed.
“You know what, I brought my car, want me to take you home?” He asked. “That’s super uncharacteristic of him.” I think to myself. I take a deep breath, already seeing the night ruined. I agreed and we left in his car. He drove for a while, and I ended up falling asleep. The car stopped and I woke up. I looked around, we weren’t at my house, we were at a park we used to go to all the time when we were kids. “Jason? What are we doing here?” I asked, confused. “D-Do you trust me?” He asked nervously. “Uh, yeah? Why?” I responded. “What is he doing?” I thought to myself. “I don’t want you to have a bad night, so-.” He got out of his seat, rushed around the car, and opened my door. He outstretched his hand and said “Then come on!” I hesitated, but I grabbed his hand as he pulled me out of his car. He stood over a foot taller than me. He pulled me in front of the headlights and turned on “Bless the Broken Road.” By Rascal Flatts. I realized exactly what he was doing. “Well, Ms. Roberts! May I have this dance?” He bowed his head and held out his hand. I couldn’t help but smile at the gesture. I even chuckled a little bit. “What corny ass nineties rom com did you steal this from!” I asked in a playful tone. “I didn’t- Well maybe top gun. It isn’t that corny right?” He shot up, his face red as a tomato. He was so cute. “Nah, it’s sweet.” I said as I walked towards him, wrapping my arm around his neck. We began slow dancing. Just as the song ended, his eyes were beyond handsome. We leaned in, I closed my eyes as we kissed. Suddenly I opened my eyes and found myself hugging him goodbye as he was getting on a big plane. He looked so good in his camo uniform. “Don’t worry! I’ll be back, I promise.” Jason said as he let me go. Then a huge black guy walked up behind him. “Don’t worry all of you, I’ll watch after him! Ain’t that right, Lieutenant!” He said as he laid his hands on Jason’s shoulders. “I know Jackson! Come on, can I say goodbye to my family?” He said, obviously perturbed.
“Alright, fine! Just, don’t take long, it’s not like we are going that far! Just across the ocean! It’s not like war is actually going to happen! They’ll back down and we will be back soon.” The man said as he walked off. Jason took a deep breath and looked directly at me
“Jules, I have something for you. But this certainly isn’t the time for it. When I get back we can talk more, I know we didn’t have much time. But I’ll be back in no time! I prom-“. I grabbed him and kissed him. “It’s about damn time!” His mom said as we kissed. I opened my eyes again. Finding his mother in black, I looked down, my black dress a morbid expression. I was so upset I couldn’t speak. I felt tears coming down my face as I was surrounded by grief. Friends and family came from all over. “I haven’t seen his dad yet.” Dad said. “Of course not! He hasn’t spoken to anyone since they received the news. I can’t imagine the pain he’s going through.” Mom said. Everything zoned out as I looked to find Jason’s picture, covered in flowers, him in his military dress uniform. I walked towards it, never saying a word. I began to break down. I was crying my eyes out as I felt a hand touch my shoulder. I look to find Mrs. thane, “Honey, it’s okay to cry, I know he’s in, a -better-place-.” She began crying as well as I closed my eyes.
I opened them to find myself in a wedding dress. I was walking towards the altar. There stood Brett, standing there. As I walked passed, I saw Mrs. thane, Mr Thane was missing, Mom, Dad, Mr. Winters and his security detachment. My entire family. The vows were said and I kissed him.
Suddenly, I opened my eyes and I was driving towards Mr. And Mrs. Thane’s house. “Come on Julia, Dad will be so upset if we are late. We should ditch these people and head home. There is no reason to waste time here.” Brett said. “No, I just wanna stop in, I haven’t seen them since-. I stopped suddenly as I saw Jason’s car. “Why is-.” I also saw my dad's truck. “Oh my god. Brett, wait in the car!” “Hey wait a minute!” Brett said as I rushed towards the house. My father was asking so strangely, then I heard the steps. “Oh my god.” I thought to myself as Jason stood there in the stairway. I was woken up by a coworker. “New girl! You fell asleep!”. I lifted my head as I looked around at the lab I was in. It was Dr. Lian, a Chinese American, about forty six years old with graying black hair. is always so nice to me. “Julia, before Doctor Braun shows up, get up!” He says with a smile.

Three days before Operation Cauterize
“Sorry Doctor Lian! I didn’t mean to fall asleep, this whole week has been really rough on me. I keep having these nightmares.” I say as I get up from my chair. “That is okay Julia! Don’t worry, I took notes for you! Take a look!” He says with a smile. As I move to my computer I see sixteen pages of notes all done and ready to go. “Oh my God. Thank you so much!” I look to Doctor Lian with gratitude. “Do not worry, Mrs. Julia, I was young once upon a time! I know it seems like ancient history but I know how stressful those years can be!” He says with a smirk. “Yeah, you have no idea. This last week has caused a lot of sleepless nights.” I sit back. “Trouble with your husband?” He asks. I look at him with a straight face “How did you know that?”. He points to my hand, “You haven’t worn your rings. Once is a mistake, but a week, that’s purposeful.” I quickly lift up my hand to find my bare ring finger. “Huh, yeah, I forgot I haven’t worn them. He’s just- here?” My eyes match Brett’s from across the room as he walks in with security at his heels. “Julia! My lovely wife! I brought you some flowers and chocolates!” He lifts his hands to show a box of dark chocolates and a bouquet of roses. He crosses the room as all the different teams look across the huge room of cubicles. He sets the chocolate and roses on my Desk.
“What are you doing here?” I say with a cold demeanor.
“What ever could you mean? I can’t just stop by to see my wife? Oh! You did forget these.” He sat my engagement and wedding ring on the desk. “I can’t imagine why you’d forget these, but don’t worry, I was in the neighborhood so I decided to stop by.” He says with a kind and loving tone.
“I- I don’t need them right now. Can I get back to work?” I ask, angered.
“Excuse me, can I have a moment to talk to my wife?” He asks Doctor Lian.
“If she’s okay with it, I can cover her spot for a few.” He says.
“Please Julia, just five minutes.” He begs. I relent and agree as we walk into a back room. He waves away his escort for a moment. “Now, Julia, I get we haven’t seen eye to eye on some things recently-“
“Haven’t seen eye to eye? You were aggressive, rude, and shouted at me for wanted to talk to Jason! I don’t think you realize I’m not some doll you can command around!” I shout at him.
“Jason is dead, he was dead two years ago, and he should be dead to you now! You’re my wife!” He growls.
“I am Julia Roberts! Okay, and you aren’t the man I married! You’ve acted like a monster the last few days and I think we should rethink this whole marriage-.” *Smack*
My face becomes full of pain as his hand strikes me. “Now, listen here you little bitch! You are my wife and you will do as I say!” He shouts as I hit the floor. I grab my face as he exhales and straightens his tie. “Anyways, I didn’t mean to hit you, but you left me no choice. Now we are leaving, together! This city has become way too dangerous.” He snarls as he grabs my arm. “Get off of me!” I shout as he hits me again. He rushes me out the door towards my office. Suddenly I see Doctor Lian. I mouth the words “Help me” to him. He rushes up and shouts “Julia! Julia! I- he stops short as Brett states him down. The entire office was staring at them. “Julia, I need your help with this protein in this Virus! Please come with me immediately.”
“Sorry Doctor, she is leaving with me.” Brett snarls. “Actually Brett, I need to help him! It’s important. Besides, I told you I wasn’t leaving! I have too much work to do.” I shout as loud as I can so that everyone is watching. Brett looks left and right. Realizing the room is watching us. He lets me go and says “Fine, stay in this hellhole, I won’t be able to get you out after this.” His words were cryptic. I exhaled, rushing to Doctor Lian. “Thank you so much Doctor. I owe you even more than I did.” I say with gratitude. “Of course, it’s not my place to ask, so let’s get back to work.” I sit back down at my desk as Brett stares me down. He scoffs and leaves. I sit back in my chair and sit my hands in my pockets, and suddenly I feel a small box in my pocket. I pull it out to find Jason’s ring. “I know Brett said to throw it away, but fuck him.” I open it and daydream about Jason and I, what could have been. Suddenly a pop up hits my computer. “Breaking News! Murder on the rise in Elkhart Pennsylvania, brutal murder up five thousand percent from last year as riots take hold of the city!” I am jarred out of my dreams. “I should’ve never married him.” I think to myself. Hours pass as I continue my work. I end up sleeping at the office. I woke up the next day to find Doctor Lian with coffee for both of us. “Good morning, workaholic.” He says with a smirk. “Oh, Thank you so much again Doctor Lian!” I say as I grab the coffee. I take a drink and look at him “Why are you so nice to me?” The question caught him off guard. “Well, I have a daughter who is about your age. And I kinda see a lot of her in you.” He says as he chokes up a bit. Suddenly the Quarantine doors shut on the facility as the entire building enters lockdown. “What? What’s happening?” I say. Suddenly Doctor Lian shoots up fearfully, “Oh no.” He says under his breath, “not today, anything but today.” He begins to freak out. He quickly locks eyes with me and his demeanor changes. “Oh, I’m sure it’s nothing Julia. Just a Test.” He quickly shuts up as a voice on the loudspeaker shoots on. It’s Doctor Braun, “Fellow Colleagues, I regret to inform you that Elkhart Nuclear Plant has gone up. We are currently on a list to be evacuated, but as we handle very- sensitive- topics, it is our duty to stay and work until they get here to help us! All non essential personnel had already been told not to show up today. Only the most important individuals are still in the building. Until we are evacuated I expect the best out of all of you! I will personally be walking through the offices later. Until then, good luck on all of your projects!” The intercom shuts off. Myself and Doctor Lian continue to work and go about our day for a few hours. I then call my dad to let him know I’m okay. I tell him I’m already evacuated to make him feel better. I take a deep breath. “Doctor Lian, when are we going to be evacuated?”
“Im-n-not sure.” His voice is sporadic and worried. He keeps staring at his watch. “Doctor, are you alright?” I ask, concerned. “Oh, Julia, whatever could you be worried about! It’s just-“ *bang* Gunshots echo the room. Men begin shouting “Get on the ground!” They are in foreign military uniforms, “You should’ve left with your husband.” He says as he looks at me.
