Chapter 05

Dick bandaged Vav's wound, he and Barbara had discussed restraints but since Vav had at least the appearance of a child neither could bring themselves to do it, so they decided just to keep their guards up, Dick agreed to watch over her to be sure nothing else happened.

An hour after he had laid her back into the bed she woke up, this time she sat up and looked around the room, her light blue eyes stopped on Dick sitting in a wooden chair near the foot of the bed,

"Who are you? where are we?" She asked, her voice timid and scared,

"My name is Richard, We're not trying to hurt you" He paused "I found you in an underground lab, right now we're in a safe place in Metropolis" Her eyes narrowed in confusion,

"What country is that?" She asked,

"Metropolis is 1 of the biggest cities in America" Dick answered,

"How did we get back to America so fast?" She asked confused,

"The lab was in Star City" This didn't seem to mean anything to her "Star City is in America, it's 4 hours away" Dick watched as her face paled, she swallowed hard looking like she might get sick, she froze her whole body began shaking,

"Are you ok?" Dick asked rushing beside the bed, Vav's breathing was shallow tears ran down her face, Dick pulled her to his chest, "It's gonna be ok" He assured her.

It was half an hour later Vav sat on the couch with a blanket wrapped around her, a cup of warm tea in her hand, Dick and Barbara across from her on Dinning table chairs,

"Did I do that?" She asked staring at the bruising on Barbara's neck,

"I'll be fine, are you ok?" Barbara's hand went to her neck on instinct, her tone was still cautious but laced with legitimate concern,

"I'm sorry, sometimes it's like I don't control, it takes over," She said chewing on her bottom lip, they noticed her left leg bouncing rapidly on the floor,

"You mean Vav?" Barbara asked, she nodded,

"That's what they called her, they said it's what I'm supposed to be" Her eyes wandered to a dark corner of the room, Barbara cleared her throat drawing the girl's attention from the darkness.

"What about you? you have to have a name, a family" Barbara had moved to the couch beside her, and after a second the girl shook her head,

"I don't know, I remember a woman, she was nice, I think they ate dinner together at night" She concentrated on the liquid in the mug in her hands "The doctors called me Project Raven, I could hear them talking about how I was failing"

"Do you know what they wanted from you?" Barbara asked,

"They wanted to control it, but I don't how, even I don't control it" Her eyes were heavy, the last hour catching up with her.

"Maybe we should get you back to bed" Barbara suggested placing a hand on the girl's shoulder "I don't think Project Raven is a fitting name, We'll need to come up with something better, like Alice or Rosie or something" recognition flashed in the girl's eye's when Barbara said, Alice,

"Alice sounds familiar but I don't remember from where, I guess I'm ok with Alice" She smiled a tired weary smile at Barbara, the building shook, the lights went out and the roof collapsed.
