Rude awakening

Rude awakening

Bright light blinded George as he attempted to open his eyes. The sound of quiet chatter and the sound of a raspy engine was the next thing that assaulted George in his nauseated state on the floor of what seemed to be metal. As his eyes adapted to the brightest George realised he was on the floor of what seemed to be an armoured troop carrier like the ones used on his home world.

This confused George because in all the tales told by the hero’s there was never technology that exceeded the Middle Ages with greater focus placed on magic and martial arts. The next blow to George’s hopes was that the other people in the carrier seemed to be wearing strange green amour and a green combat helmet from his home.

As George swivels his head around a man in a slightly different uniform noticed the change in what was thought to be a young boy that entered a comatose state.

A strange wave of nostalgia washed over George as the man started talking but he couldn’t pin down what it was.

After taking a minute to absorb the information the strange tall man gave him, George proceeds to ask the most cliché questions in the book.

The strange man looks at George with some what of a strange look and started to say something but stopped himself. The strange man was called Corporal Daniel and he was the leader of a squad of imperial guardsmen or at least was, because they were recently demolished by a swam of Reapers sent by what was thought to be a lost hive ship by the men. They are now in a Chimera heading to the closest guardsmen outpost and hoping to meet up with the main defender force with what is left of the unit so they can inform them of the coming tide. Whilst Daniel tried to explain to the boy what was happening a guardsmen spoke up.

George at this point was brought to a mental junction. He could lie and say no or bluff his way through and hope for the best. He played safe.

He knows it’s the best option in the situation and doesn’t have the choice.

At this point Daniel speaks up.

A guardsmen butts in.

George is overwhelmed by this info. In his head his mind goes into overdrive and he momentarily forgets his purpose.

The Chimera goes silent for what seemed like an eternity with even the engine seemingly going silent too.

Everyone breaks down crying with laughter and even the drivers are struggling to keep focus on the track ahead of them. The laughter continues and even gets louder when George starts to glow red.

Daniel is the first get some semblance of seriousness back and looks George straight in the eyes.

Silence returns to the Chimera and the guardsmen return to their serious and depressed state.

At this point George gets the hint and doesn’t ask anything else but as he puts his head down, mind breaking pain overcomes George again. George keeps his mouth shout tight but can’t help but bring his hands to his head. A wet sound fills his ears as his eyes start to pool blood. It only takes a few seconds for a guardsmen to notice as well.

The whole Chimera stops as even the drivers rush to the back.

Daniel is so shocked at what he sees but almost as fast regains his cool and picks up George bringing him to the centre of the transport.

Other guardsmen react on instinct surrounding Daniel and George and the drivers have already have grabbed a Diagnosticator and are running to George. For the guardsmen the next thing that truly shocks them is the diagnosis.

-no problem found-

the guardsmen go silent at Daniels out burst but no one knows what to do. There are no anaesthetics around as they had been lost to the swam and the Chimera was empty of basic supplies due to the rushed retreat. They are helpless.

Meanwhile in George’s world.

All the guardsmen’s thought processes buffer and stop in awe of the pain and language exhibited by this seemingly innocent teen as his screams dwarf that of even their dead comrades as they were eaten alive by the Reapers. The writhing, teeth grinding pain before them sends a cold sweat down their spine.

SMACK, doooooonnnnnnnggggggg.

The Chimera shakes slightly at the force created from George slamming his head against the armoured hull.

George goes limp and the guardsmen’s jaws drop. After a second Daniel is the first to come to his senses again,

Inside George’s unconscious head.
