Chapter 11 - Roland’s Regret
Roland blinked and awoke from his stupor. Roland was 22, so he didn't get a lollipop. He didn't remember any of the conversation either.
Roland once again thought about the monkey that was trampled on and forgotten. He walked over to the corpse, and picked it up. He too was invisible to the onlookers now. Roland brought Maha to the cemetery and gave the monkey a burial. An action far beyond what he should have done for the monkey.
Roland whispered a couple of words for the monkey, hoping to help it pass on. Roland turned to Maha
“Do you think what I'm doing is excessive?”
Maha wasn't too sure of anything right now. The fat bald crept uncle’s words rang in his head. “Scapegoat… someone will have to be sacrificed…”
Maha shook his head. He was sure that the creepy bald person was talking of Roland. Roland was unique among humans after all. Roland showed kindness beyond the norm. Maha just turned to Roland and said “I won't let you die.”
“It's fine, I won't die just yet. You don't need to change the subject to avoid hurting my feelings. It is unusual that I, a human would bury this monkey like it were a human being… I… I once had a sister… from another mother. They… were unique. My sister was always so very kind. She would bury the dead, regardless if it were monster or man. She would go to the orphanages to play with the children, whether she got dirty or not. She would always go help at vets and at hospitals, tending and caring for all living beings. She had an almost golden halo shrouding her at all times. Her presence would shine light on the hearts of others. Her presence would actually help cultivator fight off their inner heart demons. As you would expect, she had a lot of suitors. She was what you would call an angel. A being shrouded in gold. A gold that that attracted everyone, yet made them unable to approach. In order to not hurt anyone’s feelings, she would take advantage of that halo to fend off her suitors… Battles of brute force aren't the only ones people are capable of. She had her own battle. One that she did well in. She ended up catching the eye of the Burger King… in order to stop disaster, we had fled to Liberality. In the end, my sister still ended up having to leave me. If I could just!... if I had at least part of the kindness my sister had, I would too be golden, then it would be like my sister will always be with me.”
Maha wasn't sure how to respond to that, but said “You must really love your sister, huh.”
“That's a crude way of putting it, but yes. I do love her.”
“What happened that made her die?”
“...it was a mistake. I-I… I was gambling, thinking that I had mastered the tricks to gambling. I was up against a devil. I reached peak of human realm, but that monster had cards hidden in his belly. He… it was as if he had a whole dimension in his stomach. He switched out the cards while I was watching all the other areas. He put all in, but I couldn't match that much. He said it was fine, I could gamble something of equal worth. F-f-feeling confident that I would be able to win, I bet the only thing of equal worth, if not greater that I had. My sister. I thought. It would be over in a flash. I would bring back the money. I would see sis’s face and she would smile at me. She would have patted my head and told me that I worked hard. She would then give me a stern look to tell me that I shouldn't gamble any more, but then pat my head again… what happened… IT SHOULD’VE BEEN ME!! I WAS THE ONE GAMBLING!!!!!... I lost the gamble. I LOST IT! After that day I would only see sis’s smile one last time. That person was a monster. A monster that devours humans after torturing them. I was tied to a barrel. The rope was long and trailed of and set aburn. The psychological anticipation towards being able to free my myself and save my sister. It was too much too see.”

A flame started to burn at the string. The man made a gruesome smile. He left the room.
I started struggling against the ropes. They were too tight. I struggled as hard as I could. But the ropes were something else. The fire started to move down the line. There was no choice but to wait. This must be why sis didn't want me gambling.
I got too arrogant in my skills. I defeated all the people in the town before. After trying to back out on the debt…
Sis! Fuck! That monster is going to kill sis! That guy is insane!
As soon as I realized that, I heated the door creak open. The monster gleefully peeked through the doorway. It's unchanged gruesome face peered through the door. In his hand was the neck of my sister. She was still alive. What does this mean then?!
The vile creature laid his paws on my sis, I'm gonna FUCKING KILL HIM!!!!
The tied rope around my sis’s wrists and hung her as he pulled out a knife. He smiled at me and said with his scratchy and hard to listen to voice.
“Hey kiddo, your bit young to be gambling. Hasn't your sister ever taught you not to do so? Well I will have her take your punishment. That's only fair right?”
The creature laughed again in that vile way that made you hope he would choke on his own spit.
He brought the knife close to sis’s face. Then the knife stopped. It poked her face and blood started leaking.
I counted the blood drops, each drop of blood that drops, each minute I will and to his suffering.
He began carving my sis’s body. I hate to admit it, but the carving would be beautiful, if it weren't for the blood and tears.
I had never felt so much rage before. When the vile creature finished his carving, he laughed and said “Look how beautiful you are now, I may as well play a little with my food before I eat it. Bad habit, but oh so fun.”
I had lost it. The fire was almost there, but I still couldn't break free. All of a sudden, a voice spoke to me.
Do you want to kill that creature?
Yes. There was no doubt in my mind.
Then say the contract as it appears in your mind.
“ I Roland Kinst, agree to form a temporary contract with the dragon spirit, sin of wrath. By offering up my mana and qi, to form a connection of trust by which we will be connected. Henceforth, I am thou. Thou art I. We are one. May this binding contract hold until the night is over, and sun hath been brought anew.”
I felt an unbelievable amount of power flow in me. I tugged at the ropes and they snapped. All my rage had transformed into power. I immediately knocked out the monster and checked my sis. All she could muster to say at that point was “please… just kill me.”
It was my mistake that made this happen, and I couldn't bear to let her continue suffering. I killed her.
Before mourning, I tortured the beast all day and all night. By the time the contract ended, the monster was dead. So was my heart. I cremated my sis and sent her ashes flying from the mountains that we passed by to get to Liberality.
…..
2 years before
“*huff* *huff* sis! You're running too fast! Watch out!” My sis had slipped down the mountain, but I caught her in time.”
“Whew that was a close one.” She said
“No kidding.” I replied.
“You know, when I saw my life flash before my eyes, I thought that it wouldn't be too bad to have my ashes spread here when I die. I would become one with nature!” She said happily unlike the dark undertone of the words.
“Sis, you are never going to die. If anyone will die, it's me! And you'll have to spread my ashes here!”
We linked pinkies and together said “it's a promise”
……
“My sister wasn't raped, but she couldn't take the pain of the cuts, and didn't want to live anymore. What right did I have to keep her here, I was the one who got her in that mess. We later discovered that it was a shapeshifting monster that snuck by the border to kill people and absorb their resentment. For some reason that makes them powerful… I gained all that power, but at what cost? It wasn't worth it. In the end all I could think was: I need to find someone I could trust to spread my ashes on the lake. That way I could be one with my sister again.”
“...”
“I decided to better my life. I would stop gambling. I joined the border team to protect the border from the monsters that would find their way in. Dwalfs are the mix between an elf and a dwarf, but they are also dwarfs or elves that absorbed the suffering of the other race to take in some of their racial features. These people are no better than monsters. They should stay in their forests and underground forever.”
“...”
“But that's when I also thought, I need to keep sis’s legacy alive. If I had even 1/10 of her kindness, It would be like she is with me again. It's strange that I'm telling you, a stranger this, but it's what makes me feel better. The dragon spirit Sin of wrath has long left my body. Now, I must look forwards, do good deeds. Keep my head up. It's what sis would've wanted. I will protect the borders, even if I die doing so. Maha, if I ever died, could you cremate my body and spread me over the mountain like my sis?”
Maha felt dark foreboding and fire shadow, but he swallowed and nodded.
