Space is not just distance

It leaves a bad taste in his mouth to leave just like that without helping. But what could Lucas do?

He has no phone to call the police nor does he even know police even exist here. And besides that, would Lucas come to the rescue for a girl he didn't even know?

Keep in mind that Lucas just got his heart broken by his cheating girlfriend and he died running into a truck in his distraction.

Lucas wasn't so kind as he used to be.

"Hehehe..."

He could still hear their wicked laughter as if echoing into his eardrums.

Lucas felt nauseous at their malicious nature and he bit his lower lip until it bled red. Trying his best to ignore the wickedness, he desperately walk the opposite direction.

As soon as he thought to use the magic spell Ground Shrink, he perceived a long spear made of hot red flames flying like a bullet to his direction.

"Wha?!"

Without time to feel shocked, Lucas's body moved by its own, reflexively sliding to the left as he narrowly dodges the danger that was about to doom him.

The flaming spear zipped pass Lucas and crash to the wall before him instead. And with a loud boom, Lucas was then blown back by the explosive shockwave that sent heat waves and burning flames everywhere.

"What? The fucker's still alive! Shit, you guys go and distract him! I'll cast another spell."

"Let's go, boys!"

Lucas desperately stood up with shaking feet while suppressing the fear in his heart.

"What was that?! Was that magic?!"

Lucas was stressed to be targeted by a magic spell that had the equal power to a rocket propelled grenade. And as he sense the 4 other men armed with weapons running towards him, Lucas felt the danger increasing.

Lucas dashed to the ruins as quickly as possible. Avoiding the obstacles in free run style, he was hopping and sprinting through as fast as he could. But Lucas despaired as the 4 men were too fast to out run and they were gaining on him each second.

One of the armed men chasing him stopped and took out a bow and arrow. That man knocked an arrow into the bow and aimed toward Lucas's direction. And released the bow.

"Shit!"

Lucas cursed as he sensed the arrow coming and calculated its trajectory that will definitely aim for his head. Lucas stopped and ducked, the arrow zipped passed above him and stuck into the ruined walls instead.

"I missed?! Damn he's good at dodging!"

Spat the man derisively.

"What the hell..."

Lucas felt cold sweat down his spine. And the closer those men got, the more he could feel their killing intent. Clearly they were experienced murderers, not even gangsters would kill people this fast.

Lucas wasn't dealing with the average hooligan here. Now caught in this mess, Lucas was desperate to get out of it. Unfortunately, the 4 men moved fast as if trained in surrounding their enemies and now all four directions were block from escape. Lucas saw no way out. But they didn't attack him yet.

The look on their faces clearly expressed that they were wary of Lucas. And Lucas didn't fail to notice it and began talking.

"Why are you people chasing me?! I don't want any trouble!"

"Cut the crap! What's a master wizard doing in a place like this?! Clearly you here to find the noble's daughter and report back to your companions, right?!"

The man holding a wooden staff and wearing black red robes replied to Lucas with an arrogant tone.

"Master wizard? What are you talking about?"

Lucas mutters. The Skill DEMONOLOGY was a skill that allowed the user to access knowledge about demons and their abilities and one of them happened to be how to use magic and its nature to demons. He didn't anything about master wizard but he could guess it was some kind of rank among magic users.

Lucas felt frustrated knowing next to nothing and now felt greatly threatened being ignorant.

"Hah?! You think I'm dumb! Anyone gushing out mana as high as you are doing would definitely think you're a master wizard! Hell, I could even see you so far as if you're some kind of lighthouse!"

"Oh. I get it know."

Mutters Lucas as he blames the gushing mana from his body. He should probably start practicing how to stealthily hide his mana next time. But he can worry about that later. Now he needs to deal with this situation and stay alive.

Lucas then raises his arms in surrender.

"Look, gentlemen, there seems to be some kind of misunderstanding. I'm just a passerby, I didn't mean to do anything. And I don't want any trouble. Can you let me go?"

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Hah?! Look boss, he so scared shitless! What master wizard?! Isn't he just some brat?!"

"Don't be fooled, idiot! Underestimating a master wizard is the same as courting death! If he wanted to, he could blow us up in oblivion with us realizing it. Keep your guard up and watch if he starts manipulating his mana. He could have a magic tool hidden in his pocket."

"Oh, okay, got it boss."

Lucas clicked his tongue as he scowled at the red robed man. He clearly was quite experienced in this.

"Let's kill him."

The red robed man abruptly decided such orde and the men took action. Brandishing their weapons.

"Wait! You really don't want to do this! I'll give you anything! So just let me live!"

Lucas pleads for his life and ignores his churning stomach as if his own body was utterly disgusted at his own pathetic behavior. But as if pouring cold water over his hopes, the red robed man snickered maliciously and ordered.

"Heh? You really are scared shitless. Kill him! Take what's left of his body!"

One of the four men holding a mace braces himself and took off. He made a dash towards Lucas's back and was about to hit his head with the mace.

Lucas was appalled and wanted to dodge, but the other men wouldn't give him the chance as they attempt to corner him in place.

As the feeling of death looms closer and closer, the world around him suddenly slows to a crawl and Lucas's vision began overlapping in another place.

[Hey, dude. I'm back. What did I miss?]

Luke's voice began to echo inside Lucas's head.

"Geez, man! Where the hell have you been?!"

Replied Lucas with much frustration on his part. He also tried to move in this slow world but even he was only fast as a snail.

[Dude, I told you I'll be back after rebooting in fifteen minutes.]

"Really? You were gone for 2 hours, you know?!"

[I was? Huh? Maybe time flows differently in your place?]

"Whatever, man. Just help me here."

[Hmm, okay. Let me think.]

Luke then analyzes the gravity of the situation and ponders what to advise. He was re-analyzing again the experiences Lucas had and how he ended up in this situation. A quadrillion calculations processes in his mind. Then Luke said with a voice filled with surprise.

[You can use space magic now?]

"Yeah but I don't have any attack spells!"

[Are you an idiot?]

"Huh?! Where did that come from?!"

Luke's expresses his disappointment and Lucas was confused. Then Luke advises him with a flat tone.

[Hurry up and develop a spell that conjures protection. Preferably a barrier. But if you can, a shield is fine.]

"And how do I do that?! I only got space attribute magic!"

[You're thinking things too little here. Space is not just distance, doofus! It's an empty force field that can control the forces in the vacuum! Just think of a solid wall surrounding you like a barrier as a mental image. The forces in the vacuum will act as your protection.]

Lucas didn't know what Luke was talking about but he managed to calm himself down quite quickly to think things through. Understanding that the little time that slowed down at this very moment extended his chances of survival, he began to ponder deeply.

"Space is a force field that can control the forces in the vacuum? Just how did he come to that conclusion?"

Lucas's didn't quite understand what Luke was explaining but with his life depending in it, he desperately tries to tap in the nature of space.

His mana gushes out as fast as his thoughts could be processed. Weaving into a somewhat complicated spell that's forcing the mana around him to react and change. With a rough mental image in mind, Lucas doubted this spell will work. In fact, it may even backfire on him. So he just relied on his instincts to produce some form of result to compensate his lack of knowledge.

The risk of attempting the casting of unknown spells was quite well known to wizards. Lucas didn't know this but if this spell couldn't be casted, his mana would grow unstable and damage his magical foundations. Preventing him from casting spells as easily as before. No sane mage would attempt what Lucas was doing especially when he had no leverage.

But at this moment, a miracle occurred.

The mana outside began to react violently to the forced changes but eventually a phenomenon took place. A thin film of obscurity surrounds Lucas like a barrier. And even in the world that slowed down, that didn't change that a mace was about to crush the back of his cranium.

Or so it should've been. But once the mace made contact with the thin film of magical barrier, the shape of the mace warped and couldn't touch an inch of Lucas's figure.

The mace could only continue down and hit the ground with a loud thud. Causing a small crater as it did.

[A barrier that extends the distance of one inch to a meter long? You still think space is just distance from point a to point b, don't you? Whatever, it's better than nothing. I'll teach you the profundity of space-time later but right now, focus on staying alive.]

Luke calmly analyzes Lucas's attempts. Adding a comment, he continues to give his support while he also secretly deals with his own issues.

Lucas's heart was thumping wildly. If that mace did hit him, he would have to say bye to this Demon Lord life so early.

The man who attacked first slowly had his face express his confusion while the other men were too slow to notice the oddity and attacked with their own weapons.

But be it a sword slashing, an ax hacking and a mace smashing, none of their attacks reach Lucas as soon a they came contact with the thin film around him. Again and again, they fail in their attempts. And noticing the apparent lack of tension on Lucas's face, they felt threatened.

It was as if they couldn't reach him despite the distance was so close.

One of the men took this chance to reload his bow and arrow and shot the arrow at Lucas while he stood still. But as soon as the arrow tip touch the thin film, the arrow warped in shape as if shrinking and then dropped to the ground like it had just lost its kinetic energy.

"Fuck! What kind of magic barrier is that?! We don't even feel anything when we hit him!"

The four armed men couldn't help express their shock and anger as they stopped attacking Lucas and grew more apprehensive of him.

"Luke, what did they just say?"

Due to how slow the world was, Lucas couldn't understand what they were saying. But Luke just replied with disinterest.

[Trashes aren't worth listening too. Just focus your attention on red robes there. He's casting some sort of spell.]

Although Lucas was safe for now, he knew his predicament better. The barrier he made was indeed keeping him safe but it won't last long. Because Lucas could feel the massive consumption of mana each time they attacked him. Especially that arrow shot. It took a lot of mana just to block that one, what more if they would shoot him a dozen times? Could he keep up?

Lucas was definitely aware that once he ran out of mana, his chances of surviving was slim to none. He had to get out of here before he ran out of options.

Lucas then focuses his attention on the red robed man as he was the only one that put Lucas on edge the most.

And when Lucas saw what kind of spell that guy, he went pale. As a magic circle of red hover above the wooden staff, the red robed man conjured three flaming spears hovering above him while he chanted.

"You lots get back! I'm gonna blow this fucker to kingdom come! Blaze your eternal glory oh mighty flames! Sunder spears!"

The flaming spears launched and flew like missiles shot out at Mach 4. Even in this slow world, Lucas didn't believe he could dodge it.

[Okay, on my mark, ground shrink your way out at north west of your direction. This is your only chance to survive so listen to me very clearly, got it?]

"What? Oh, got it."

Lucas decided to put his faith on Luke.
