Chapter 11 - small interlude

Back in the cell, Lucas and Karim watched me intently, their curiosity almost palpable.

"How did it go?" Karim inquired eagerly.

"Did you find out why she hates us?" Lucas pressed.

"Yeah, I did,” I replied solemnly, "and it's not a pleasant story."

"So?" Lucas asked, leaning forward with great interest.

"Care to explain?" Karim added, his expression serious.

"This might take a while," I began, "but I will try to keep it short."

"Spill it." Lucas urged.

"Alright," I started, pausing to gather my thoughts. "It all began with the tragic murder of her granddaughter by a goblin."

"She hates our entire race because of one person?" Lucas interrupted, his disbelief evident.

I nodded. "Yes.”

Karim shook his head in dismay. "That's extreme."

“It seems a witch’s temperament can be quite volatile. Something to do with their bloodline."

Karim raised an eyebrow. "So, it's not just about the goblin incident?"

I nodded again. "Yes, actually, the witch used to be a pacifist... Her insanity was fueled by her love for her granddaughter and cursed lineage."

Silence ensued.

Karim and Lucas froze, looking at me like I was growing a third eye in the middle of my forehead.

"Seriously? That psychopath was a fucking pacifist???" they asked like a single man.

"Yes she was. The human king himself said it." I replied.

"This is crazy." Lucas sighted.

"Ryan, please. Don't give us this kind of surprise again." continued Karim.

"Actually, there's more you should know." I replied while scratching my head nervously.

"What else? You are not going to give me an heart attack right?" Karim inquired with a warning look.

"Go on, Ryan. I will do a CPR on Karim if his heart stop." Lucas winked at us, joking to lighten the mood.

“Alright guys.” I paused to give myself the time to find the right words. “The whole murder incident was a huge masquerade. A political move from humans, to make goblins take the blame, and use the witch to win the war.”

Lucas and Karim exchanged stunned glances.

"A political move? Are you serious?" Lucas exclaimed.

"Yes. The human king made someone commission a human assassin to kill the witch granddaughter’s. They turned the assassin into a goblin to shift the blame on us."

"So, the witch was exploited? They turned her into a pawn in their political game?" Karim asked.

"Yes," I confirmed. "The mastermind behind the incident was the human king, and a fellow witch.”

Lucas clenched his fists. "That's despicable. I knew humans had no honor, but now I don't have a single doubt anymore."

"Exactly my thoughts," I agreed.

Karim sighed heavily. "so we've been caught in the aftermath of their schemes."

"Seems like it. Humans are pure evil." I answered.

"Poor little girl though. Got caught-up in all this mess for being related to the witch." Lucas continued.

"True. It's always the innocent who suffer. I don't like humans, but that little girl was just a kid." I agreed.

"What do we do then? Any idea on how to make the witch see the truth?" Karim asked.

"Actually, I have some big news I haven't told you yet," I said nervously, fidgeting slightly.

"What you still haven't finished?" Karim asked.

"Sorry, I just didn't get a chance to mention it earlier," I replied.

I took a deep breath, "Actually, I met my god." I announced.

A silence ensued.

"You what???" They exclaimed at the same time.

Lucas raised his eyebrow, "You aren't pulling our leg right?"

"No, I'm serious," I affirmed, meeting their incredulous stares with a steady gaze.

Lucas and Karim exchanged a glance, clearly taken aback by the revelation.

Karim looked at me with skepticism. "And... what did your god say?"

"Actually... He is the one who revealed the conspiracy to me." I answered.

"You serious man? You had like some kind of ... divine revelation?" Continued Lucas.

"Yes i had." i answered firmly. "I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth. Why would I lie to you?"

"So, your god just showed up and spilled the beans on this whole mess?" Lucas asked incredulously.

I nodded. "Yes, exactly. He revealed that the human king orchestrated the murder and framed the goblins to manipulate the witch and gain advantage in the war."

Karim rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "But, why did he reveal this to you in person?"

"He said that the truth needed to come out, for us to win the war." I answered.

"So how are we going to break the news to the witch? Can master Eldric teach you some illusion magic?" asked Lucas.

"Actually, the great Zholkiem gave me another divine blessing to help us in that aspect."

"Another blessing? For real?" asked Karim with incredulity.

"I am jealous man! Are you the god of luck or something?" asked Lucas while giving me a small jab to the ribs.

I smiled while evading his attack, "Perhaps who know?"

"So what kind of ability did you receive?" asked Karim with interest.

"He gave me the ability to share visions and memories with others."

Karim raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. "That's... unexpected. But if it helps us convince her, I'm all for it."

Lucas nodded thoughtfully. "So, we show her what really happened, straight from the source. That could work."

"But i can't do it right away. Master Eldric needs to teach me how to use it."

Both of them looked at each other again, then at me.

"Well we still have some time. Eldric informed us the death games would start in two days." Said Lucas.

"Okay. I will hurry up. Two days isn't much."

"Good luck Ryan! We are counting on you!" Said Karim.

"You can do it!" Added Lucas, giving me the thumbs-up.

"Thanks guys I will succeed, I promise!" i answered with a confident smile.
