Chapter 3

No one really knew where Vivian lived. She was always working, or hanging out with the guys. No one dared follow her home, you'd be the target for jokes for weeks. Jack knew he had an opportunity of a life time. He was fairly surprised when she turned onto private drive. The drive wound through the woods, deep and green, teeming with wild life. They finally pulled up to the house. It wasn't any house, it was a plantation style home, white pillars and a porch that wrapped around the whole house. It was a simple two story with a basement. Jack was sure of it. This type of historic home costs more than the average officer makes. Vivian pulled into a large five stall garage. She only had the one vehicle space open, the rest looked like it was her work space. Vivian got out and waited for Jack. He got out and looked around.

"Wow." is all he could say. Vivian smiled and walked out the side door. Jack followed as they walked through the backyard, side yard and then up the front steps. He followed as she opened the door without a key. Why wouldn't she want this place locked up tight?

"Hi Rocky!" Vivian greeted. Jack pondered heavily over the unlocked door. Then he saw it, a big snow tiger. It laid sprawled on the floor.

"Is...that legal?" Jack asked, a mix of surprised and frightened.

"Uh.. Yeah. Of course." Vivian pat the tigers head and walked into the kitchen. Jack looked over the tiger in amazement. Fur, whiter and purer than snow, with silver stripes. The tiger stood and stalked over to Jack. Jack watched every muscle flex and relax, then the tiger sat in front of him. Jack reached out and let the tiger sniff his hand, instead of sniffing it Rocky licked it with a scratchy pink tongue. Jack smiled then pet the tiger between ears. Sitting the tiger stood to his chest. Standing on all fours it came to his hip. He walked toward the area Vivian went to.

"Viv?" He peeked into the into the kitchen.

"We'll go upstairs." She smiled to him then went toward a staircase. He followed her curiously. She was one of the most mysterious people he knew. He followed her down dim lit halls, all decorated in a crisp white paint and dark hardwood floors. Any light that came into the halls were from windows. Vivian opened a big door and walked in. Jack followed Vivian into a huge library. A big chair sat near the fireplace, and within the fireplace some logs and victorian kettle. Viv pulled a chair over by the big one. She sat in the big chair and Jack sat in the other chair she pulled over. ~~~~~~

Vivian watched as her grandfather sat in his red chair. It was red velvet with leather along the edges. Vivian believed it came from a palace, but she knew her grandfather would never tell her. He didn't even allow her near it at first. She waited by the fireplace where it sat. She poured tea from a tin kettle for her grandfather and his guests. Vivian was seven and the biggest embarrassment to the family.

Jack looked around the library. He keeps going back to the kettle, like he's seen it before. His eyes bopped over pictures she had on the walls. Family portraits, and some landscape from the UK. One portrait was larger than the others and was placed above the fireplace. It was Sir Robert Peel, the guy who created modern day policing.

"My grandfather.." Vivian quietly stated. She wore a soft smile, and Jack looked confused.

"Great... Great.. Right?" He asked in utter confusion. She smiled a playful smile.

"No, no. I danced with him and served him tea." Jack looked at her shocked. He couldnt speak. "He died shortly after I turned twenty." She quietly stated.

"Sir Peel died in 1850..." Jack mumbled trying to comprehend.

"July 02 1850.. Morn' to be exact." Vivian murmured looking at her hands. Jack sat quietly, Vivian looked to make sure he was still breathing then spoke. "I was twenty when I was changed. A dark figure... I guess I'm supposed to be scary and ugly." She shook her head and laughed. "Oh what the movies do to you people." It finally clicked in Jacks head.

"Wait. You're... a vampire?" She nods.

"Vampire.. Yes. One that drinks blood, kills people and animals, no." The color of his skin went from tan, to white, to tan again. She could tell he was overwhelmed.

"Then how..." He couldn't finish as she smiled ever so slightly.

"Blood banks. I can also live on human food. Your food is kind of blah though." Jack laughs knowing all to well about the food being bland. He could get used to this side of his partner.

"Sometimes it can be." He admits with a smile in his eye. Vivian sat back in her chair, the chair seeming to fit her dominating attitude.

"Jack, you can't tell anyone about this. If you do I'll have to kill you." As Jack laughed Vivian stayed calm and rigid. "I'm serious." He stops laughing and sits back in his chair. Of course she was serious. She always was unless she was in a playful mood.

"Of course. Sorry." Jack mumbles. She looks to the time and then to him.

"I'll talk to the Lieutenant. We'll be partnered from here on through." Jack nodded slowly. Was being her partner dangerous? He didn't know, and didn't want to know. "They will be wondering whats taking us so long. Lets go." Vivian stood and Jack followed her out. They put their gear back on and went back to the station.
