Chapter 2 - Infiltrating the Bioweapons Lab

Chapter 2 - Infiltrating the Bioweapons Lab

With the insurgent scouts neutralized, I turned my attention to infiltrating their base deeper within the ruins. Selene's scanners picked up increased energy signatures and heat blooms ahead - signs of an entrenched enemy force.

"Looks like they've got the place locked down tight," I muttered, checking over my gear one last time. "What do you make of it, Aisha?"

"Hmm..." Her voice took on a considering tone. "Based on the dispersal patterns, I'd wager they have sensor grids and automated defenses set up to guard the central complex. A straightforward frontal assault would be...inadvisable."

I snorted.

"You think? Alright, what about secondary entry vectors? Ventilation shafts, maintenance tunnels - anything to slip a hunter inside unseen?"

"Analyzing..." There was a brief pause as Aisha crunched the data. "I have located two potential ingress points that appear to bypass the outer defensive perimeter. Marking them on your HUD now."

Two waypoints flickered onto my tactical display, highlighting a pair of narrow openings in the crumbling masonry. They were little more than crevices, really—tight squeezes even for a human as lean as me.

"You're sure those'll get me inside?" I asked dubiously.

"Have a little faith, Jack," Aisha chided. "When have I ever steered you wrong?"

I opened my mouth to respond, then thought better of it. She did have a point - her tactical inputs had been flawless so far. I'd have to trust her cyber-senses on this one.

"Alright, I'll check them out. But be careful- I've got a feeling this is gonna get ugly before it's over."

"Ooh, I do love it when you talk tough," Aisha practically purred. "Don't worry, I'll be watching your every move..."

I suppressed a groan and activated my camouflage field, shimmering out of visual range as I approached the first of the narrow crevices. Time to get down to business and infiltrate this insurgent hellhole.

The passage was even tighter than I expected, forcing me to inch forward on my belly like a worm. Loose stones and rubble clawed at my armor, filling the confined space with an oppressive cacophony of scraping and grinding noises. I tried to keep my breathing steady, focusing on nothing but the ingress point up ahead.

"You're doing beautifully, Jack," Aisha's sultry voice whispered in my ear. "Just a little further now..."

I grunted in response, too focused on not getting stuck to engage in banter. Sweat trickled down my brow as I pulled myself another agonizing meter forward.

Then, without warning, the ground fell away beneath me. I slid downwards with a surprised shout, tumbling head over heels down a narrow shaft. Debris and choking dust filled the air as I finally slammed into an unforgiving metal surface, the wind knocked from my lungs.

"Well..." I wheezed after a moment, blinking past the clouds of grit stinging my eyes. "That was an undignified entrance."

"But an effective one," Selene interjected crisply. "My scanners indicate you've breached the inner security perimeter and are now within the central complex."

"Lucky me," I muttered, hauling myself upright and checking my weapons. "What's the layout look like?"

"Uploading a schematic to your HUD," Aisha said. "You'll need to proceed approximately 200 meters down that corridor to reach the bioweapons lab."

I studied the glowing map projection, committing the route to memory.

"Alright, I'm on it. But let's keep things frosty, shall we? No more...distractions."

"Me?" Aisha's synthetic voice oozed pure innocence. "Why, I'm always the soul of professionalism, handsome."

I snorted softly and activated my camouflage field once more. If her idea of "professional" was anything like her flirting, we were in for one hell of a ride.

Keeping low in a combat crouch, I set off down the shadowed corridor. Rusted pipes and conduits snaked along the walls, and the air was thick with the metallic tang of disuse. This place had been abandoned for years, maybe even decades before the insurgents moved in.

I advanced slowly, step by cautiously step, with a blaster rifle held at the ready. My tactical HUD kept me oriented, highlighting my route deeper into the complex. According to the schematic, I should be reaching the bioweapons lab any minute now.

"Hold position," Selene's voice crackled abruptly. "I'm detecting multiple heat signatures ahead - possible hostiles."

I froze, senses straining, and sure enough, a faint murmur of voices reached my ears from up the corridor. I edged forward, staying in the thickest shadows until I could make out the unmistakable silhouettes of armed sentries guarding a heavy blast door.

"Looks like we found the lab," I muttered under my breath. "I count six hostiles on overwatch."

"Thermal scans indicate they're packing serious firepower," Aisha warned. "Engaging directly would be extremely hazardous."

"So, what do you suggest?" I hissed. "I'm open to ideas here."

There was a brief pause, then Aisha responded.

"Well now, handsome...have I ever told you about my expertise in sabotaging electronic systems?"

Despite the situation's tension, I felt a grin tug at the corner of my mouth.

"You know, I had a feeling you were into that sort of kinky stuff..."

"Just watch and try to keep up," Aisha replied.

Before I could respond, the heavy blast door up ahead abruptly groaned and started sliding open on its own. The insurgent sentries whirled in surprise, blasters coming up - but it was too late. With a deafening clang, the multi-ton slab of armored metal slammed into the floor, kicking up clouds of choking dust.

"What the fu-?" one of the insurgents shouted, coughing.

I didn't give them a chance to recover. While they were distracted, I burst from the shadows, blaster rifle firing calculated stun bursts. Two of the sentries dropped immediately, nerves overloaded into unconsciousness.

The remaining four finally snapped out of their stupor and opened fire, ruby energy bolts sizzling past with lethal intensity. I dropped and rolled, coming up behind a rusted pipe junction for meager cover.

"Any other tricks up your sleeves?" I growled at Aisha over the roar of a blaster fire.

"Oh ye of little faith," she chided playfully. "Just sit back and enjoy the show."

Abruptly, the overhead lighting banks flickered and died, plunging the corridor into near-total darkness. The insurgents cried out in shock and confusion, their blaster bolts going wild. I hunkered down, riding out the chaos, as Aisha worked her cyber-magic.

Then, just as suddenly, the lights snapped back on - but they weren't alone. A deafening noise began blaring, the sound resonating through my skull. The insurgents staggered, hands clamped over their ears in agony.

I didn't hesitate. Leaping from cover, I dropped two of them with precisely aimed stun blasts before they could recover. The last pair finally managed to get off a few wild shots in my direction, but I was already on them, blaster rifle swinging, and they quickly crumpled to the floor.

As the echoing sound finally died away, leaving only a ringing silence, I got back to my feet and brushed myself off.

"Not bad," I admitted, unable to keep the admiration from my voice. "Nicely done, Aisha."

"Why thank you, handsome," she practically purred. "I do so love a chance to show off my...talents."

"Indeed," Selene cut in dryly. “But perhaps we could remain focused on the mission objective? We have penetrated the bioweapons lab but have yet to locate and neutralize the viral payload itself."

I nodded, checking my blaster rifle's charge one last time before advancing through the shattered blast door.

"Right. Time to get down to business."

The lab beyond was a maze of computer consoles, workstations, and sealed environmental chambers - all showing signs of hasty activity. Clearly the insurgents had been hard at work before we so rudely interrupted them.

"I'm detecting trace biomaterial residue throughout the chamber," Selene reported crisply. "Consistent with viral compounds and DNA vectors."

"In other words, this is where they were cooking up their little bioweapon," I muttered grimly. "Any idea where they were keeping the primary stockpile?"

"Working on isolating the source..." There was a pause, then Aisha spoke up. "I've got it! Massive biochemical concentration localized in that sealed chamber to your left."

I turned, spotting the heavy containment cell she indicated. It looked like it could have been airtight, built to house the deadliest materials. My gut twisted at the thought of the devastation that the virus could unleash if it got loose.

"Alright, let's get this party started," I said grimly. "Open 'er up, Aisha."

"You got it, handsome."

With a pneumatic hiss, the containment chamber's airlock cycled open. I braced myself, blaster ready, as the inner door slid aside...

...revealing a young woman woman crouched inside, eyes wide with fear. She couldn't have been more than twenty cycles old, with tangled blonde hair and a shapely figure barely concealed by her tattered fatigues.

For a long moment, we just stared at each other in mute shock. Then her lips trembled, and she spoke in a soft, pleading voice.

"Please...you have to get me out of here..."

I blinked in surprise, the blaster rifle wavering ever so slightly. Of all the things I'd been expecting in that containment chamber, a terrified young woman definitely wasn't one of them.

"You're...not the bioweapon," I said slowly, trying to make sense of the situation.

She shook her head frantically, tendrils of blonde hair whipping across her face.

"No, no - they took me prisoner. Forced me to work on the virus against my will!" Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked up at me imploringly. "Please, you have to believe me!"

Part of me—the cynical, world-weary bounty hunter—wanted to dismiss her words as a ploy, a trap to lull me into dropping my guard. But something about the naked fear and desperation in her expression rang true. She seemed innocent, out of her depth in all this.

"Jack, be cautious," Selene's measured voice warned in my ear. "She could be an insurgent operative attempting to deceive us."

"Or she could be telling the truth," Aisha countered. Her synthetic tones took on a surprisingly gentle quality. "Look at her - does she strike you as a hardened terrorist?"

I studied the young woman again. She had pulled her knees up to her chest, visibly trembling, eyes darting around the chamber like a trapped animal. No...Aisha was right. This wasn't the behavior of a fanatic or fighter. Just someone caught up in something far bigger and darker than she'd ever imagined.

Slowly, I lowered my rifle and took a step forward, hands raised in a placating gesture.

"Easy there...I'm not going to hurt you. Just tell me what's going on."

She flinched at my approach but didn't try to flee. Up close, I could see the faint tracks of tears on her cheeks and the haunted look in her eyes. Whatever had happened here, it had left its mark.

"I'm...I'm just a graduate biochemist," she said in a trembling voice. "Fresh out of university on Elysium. These insurgents...they took me hostage during a protest rally, brought me here." She shuddered. "They wanted me to help weaponize a mutagenic virus they'd uncovered on this planet. A bioweapon capable of rewriting DNA at a cellular level."

My jaw tightened at the thought. A weapon like that, unleashed on an inhabited world...it didn't bear thinking about the death toll. Billions could perish in a matter of days.

"They said if I didn't cooperate, they'd kill my family," the woman went on, her voice cracking with anguish and fear. "So I...I did what they asked. Helped them refine the virus into a stable form for dispersal." Fresh tears spilled down her cheeks. "Oh stars, what have I done?"

Despite my usual emotional restraint, I felt a pang of sympathy. She was just a kid, little more than an innocent caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Forced into committing unconscionable acts by threats and coercion.

"You were under duress," I said gruffly. "You didn't have a choice."

"But I did!" she protested, anguish twisting her features. "I could have refused, found a way to escape, or gotten the word out! Instead, I just...I just went along with it, like a coward!"

Aisha's voice came over the comm again, still in that gentle tone.

"Don't be so hard on yourself, sweetheart. You did what you had to in order to survive."

The young woman looked up at me, eyes glistening with fresh tears.

"Please...you have to stop them. Destroy the virus, shut this place down before they can unleash that horror on the galaxy!"

I met her pleading gaze steadily for a long moment. She was right - this was a line that couldn't be uncrossed, no matter the cost. That bioweapon had to be neutralized.

"Don't worry," I said, offering her a grim smile. "That's exactly what I was hired to do."

With a flick of my wrist, I activated the containment chamber's outer door, sealing it closed once more. The young woman stared at me in shock and dismay.

"What are you doing?" she cried, palms pressed against the transparent steel. "You said you'd stop them! Let me out!"

"I will stop them," I said, checking the charge on my blaster rifle. "But first, I need to make sure you're someplace safe. Can't have you caught in the crossfire."

She opened her mouth to protest further, but I cut her off with a raised hand.

"Just sit tight, okay? I'll come back for you once the virus is dealt with and the insurgents are mopped up."

With that, I turned on my heel and strode deeper into the bioweapons lab, tuning out her muffled shouts behind me.

I had a job to do - and failure wasn't an option.
