Book 2 - Chapter 2 - The Guildmaster's Judgment

As we were hustled through the Syndicate freighter's corridors, I couldn't help but feel a growing sense of unease. These enforcers didn't seem inclined to listen to reason - they were clearly just going to drag us before their boss and let him decide our fate.

Not an inspiring prospect, given the Vishni Syndicate's reputation for ruthlessness.

Selene sidled up beside me, her voice low. "What do you think they're going to do with us, Jack?"

"Hard to say." I kept my tone level, not wanting to betray any worry in front of our captors. "Probably try to extort some hefty 'fines' out of us for trespassing. If we're lucky, they'll just kick us out of their space once we pay up."

Aisha scowled darkly. "And if we're not lucky?"

I grimaced. "Then we might be in for a world of trouble."

Dr. Vance spoke up then; her brow furrowed with concern. "Do you really think they'll simply let us go, even if we agree to their demands? After all, we're carrying information they likely consider extremely valuable."

I had to concede the point. "You're probably right, doc. These Syndicate types don't tend to be the forgiving sort. We're gonna have to play this one smart."

Just then, the enforcers shoved us through a bulkhead into what appeared to be the freighter's main cargo hold. Waiting there was a heavily-augmented thug in ornate body armor - clearly the local boss.

He eyed us with open contempt. "So, the trespassers have been caught. Good." His gaze settled on me. "You. Bannon, right? My men tell me you claim to be 'just passing through'. Care to elaborate on that?"

I kept my expression neutral. "Not much to elaborate on. We're an independent crew just trying to get to the outer systems. Didn't realize we were wandering into your territory."

The Guildmaster sneered. "Likely story. You expect me to believe a bunch of strangers just happened to stumble into my domain by pure chance?"

Selene stepped forward then, her tone diplomatic. "Please, sir, we mean you no disrespect. We were simply looking for a quiet place to resupply and make some necessary repairs. If we've caused any unintentional offense, we're more than willing to pay any fees or fines to make amends."

The Guildmaster studied her for a long moment, then let out a contemptuous laugh.

"Fees and fines, is it? Oh, you've got that part right, at least." His smile turned cruel. "But as for making amends, well...that's not quite how we handle trespassers in these parts."

I tensed, sensing this was about to take a very ugly turn. "Look, there's no need for any trouble. Just tell us what you want, and we'll be on our way."

The Guildmaster's eyes glinted with malicious glee. "What I want, Bannon, is to make an example of you and your little crew. Send a message to any other would-be interlopers that the Vishni Syndicate doesn't take kindly to uninvited guests."

He gestured sharply to his enforcers. "Take them to the containment cells. I'll decide what to do with them later."

As the guards roughly herded us away, I caught Vance's eye, seeing the naked fear there. Clearly, she was realizing just how dire our situation had become. We were in deep trouble now. And the only way out was to find a way to turn the tables on these Syndicate thugs before they decided to make good on their threats.

As the guards shoved us down a dimly lit corridor, I racked my brain for any possible escape plan. But our options seemed limited - we were outnumbered, outgunned, and in the heart of Syndicate territory.

"Any bright ideas, Jack?" Aisha muttered under her breath, eyeing our captors warily.

"Working on it," I muttered back. "Just stay alert and ready to move if the chance arises."

Selene glanced around, taking in our surroundings. "These cells don't look too secure. Maybe we can overpower the guards when they come to feed us or something."

I shook my head. "Doubt it. These guys don't seem the type to take any chances. We're probably under constant surveillance."

Dr. Vance spoke up then, her voice tight with worry. "So what are we going to do? We can't just sit here and wait for them to...to decide our fate."

I didn't have a good answer for that. The truth was, I wasn't sure we had any way out of this predicament. The Syndicate clearly saw us as a threat, and they weren't the forgiving type.

Before I could respond, we were shoved into a small cell block, and the heavy door clanged shut behind us. The guards leveled their weapons threateningly.

"Get comfy, trespassers. The Guildmaster will be by to have a little chat later."

With that, they turned and marched away, leaving us alone in the dimly lit cell. I let out a frustrated sigh, running a hand through my hair.

"Well, this is a fine mess we've gotten ourselves into."

Aisha glanced around the cell, then back at me. "You got that right. How the hell are we gonna get out of this one?"

I shook my head. "I'm working on it. Just...give me a minute to think."

Selene moved to stand beside me, her expression serious.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

"We don't have a lot of time, Jack. If the Syndicate decides we're more trouble than we're worth..."

She trailed off, but the implication was clear. I grimaced, knowing she was right. We had to find a way out of this, and fast.

Vance spoke up then, her voice steadier than I would have expected. "Perhaps...perhaps we could try negotiating again. Explain that we mean no harm, that we're simply caught up in something much larger than ourselves. Maybe they didn't understand us the first time."

I considered that for a moment, then shook my head. "Doubt it. These Syndicate types don't exactly strike me as the reasonable sort. They see us as trespassers, and that's all that matters to them."

"So what, we just give up?" Aisha demanded, her eyes flashing with defiance. "That's not like you, Jack. You always have a plan."

I paused, considering Aisha's words. She was right - I wasn't the type to just give up, even in the face of long odds.

"Actually," I began, "I might have an idea. But I can't guarantee it'll work."

The others leaned in, eyes filled with hope.

"What is it?" Selene pressed.

I took a deep breath. "I'm going to offer our services to the Syndicate. As a mercenary."

Vance blinked in surprise. "You want to...work for them? After they've imprisoned us?"

I held up a hand. "Just hear me out. These Syndicate types value strength and usefulness above all else. If I can convince them I'm more valuable to them as an asset than a prisoner, they might be willing to cut us a deal."

Aisha crossed her arms, studying me skeptically. "And what if they decide they'd rather just keep us locked up? Or worse?"

"Then we cross that bridge when we come to it," I admitted. "But right now, it's the best shot we've got."

Selene considered it for a moment, then nodded slowly. "It's risky, but I suppose we don't have much choice. I'm with you, Jack."

I glanced at Vance, who still looked uncertain. "Doc? You in?"

She hesitated, then sighed. "I don't like it, but...I suppose I don't see any better options. Very well, I'll trust your judgment."

"Alright then." I squared my shoulders. "Time to go make our pitch."

I stepped up to the cell door and rapped on it firmly. After a moment, one of the guards reappeared.

"What do you want?"

"Tell your Guildmaster I'd like a word. I've got a...proposal for him."

The guard eyed me skeptically, then turned and walked off. I could only hope my gambit would pay off.

It was a long shot, but if I could convince the Syndicate I was more valuable as a hired gun than a prisoner, maybe - just maybe - we'd have a chance of walking out of here in one piece.

The guard returned a short time later, gesturing for us to step out of the cell.

"The Guildmaster will see you now."

I exchanged a brief glance with the others, then followed the guard down the corridor. We were led to a larger chamber, where the armored Syndicate boss waited.

"Well, well," he said, eyeing me with a smirk. "Seems the trespasser has a proposition for me. This ought to be interesting."

I stepped forward, keeping my tone even. "Look, let's skip the pleasantries. You and I both know you've got no reason to let us go. So how about this - you let me and my crew go, and in exchange, you get yourself a new mercenary."

The Guildmaster arched one brow. "You, a mercenary? And what makes you think I'd be interested in your services?"

"Because I'm the best damn mercenary in the galaxy," I replied bluntly. "And I can guarantee you, I'll be a lot more useful to you out there earning your credits than rotting in one of your cells."

He studied me for a long moment, then let out a harsh laugh. "Bold words, trespasser. But what's to stop me from just keeping you all locked up and finding my own hired guns?"

I shrugged. "Nothing, I suppose. But think about it - with me working for you, you get access to my skills, my ship, my contacts. Not to mention a little insurance against any would-be rivals looking to muscle in on your turf."

The Guildmaster's eyes narrowed as he considered my offer. I could practically see the gears turning in his head.

Finally, he nodded. "Alright, Bannon. You've piqued my interest. But let me make one thing clear - you try any funny business, and I'll have my people splatter your brains all over the bulkhead. Understood?"

I inclined my head. "Understood. So, do we have a deal?"

The Guildmaster gestured to the guards. "Release them. And Bannon?" He fixed me with a hard stare. "Welcome to the Vishni Syndicate."

As the guards removed our handcuffs, I caught Aisha's eye and gave her a subtle nod. She seemed wary but didn't voice any objections.

The Guildmaster regarded us coolly. "Well, Bannon, welcome to the team. I've got a job that requires your particular set of skills."

I raised one brow. "Oh? What did you have in mind?"

"A little diamond heist," he replied with a dark chuckle. "One of our rivals has a shipment of rare gems arriving at a secure facility tomorrow night. I want you and your crew to hit the place, grab the goods, and get out cleanly."

I didn't like the sound of that. Diamond theft was risky business, the kind that could get you killed if you weren't careful. Or if the info wasn't genuine.

"That's a tall order," I said cautiously. "What makes you think we're up for it?"

"Simple." The Guildmaster leaned back in his chair, lacing his fingers together. "Didn't you say you were the best mercenary in the whole galaxy? Besides... if you fail...well, let's just say I'll be making an example of you and your friends."

The implied threat was clear. We had no choice but to take the job, no matter how dangerous.

Selene stepped forward, her expression tense. "And what exactly will we get out of this little arrangement?"

"Besides your lives?" The Guildmaster smirked. "How about a nice little bonus of fifty thousand credits? Enough to get you on your way and keep my operation running smoothly."

Fifty thousand, huh? Not a bad payday, if we could pull it off. I glanced at the others, reading the reluctance on their faces.

"Alright, we're in," I said finally. "Just tell us what we need to know."

The Guildmaster gestured to one of his lieutenants, who stepped forward and handed me a data pad.

"All the details you'll need are in there - facility layout, security systems, guard rotations, the whole nine yards." He fixed me with a hard stare. "Don't screw this up, Bannon. For your sake and theirs."

I tucked the data pad into my jacket, trying to ignore the pit of unease in my stomach. This was hardly the kind of job I would have chosen, but we didn't have much choice.

As we turned to leave, the Guildmaster called out one last warning.

"Oh, and Bannon? Don't even think about double-crossing me. I've got eyes everywhere.”

I nodded stiffly, the weight of the data pad feeling heavy in my jacket. With a final glance at the Guildmaster, I ushered the others out of the chamber and back towards our ship.

As soon as we were out of earshot, Aisha spoke up.

"A diamond heist, huh? Sounds risky."

I grimaced. "That's putting it mildly. But we didn't exactly have much choice in the matter."

Selene frowned. "Do we even know what we're getting into? This could be a setup to get us killed."

"Probably," I admitted. "But we need to at least take a look at the intel. See if there's any way we can pull this off without getting caught."

Dr. Vance cleared her throat. "And if we can't? What then?"

I sighed. "Then we figure something else out. But for now, let's focus on the job at hand."

Back on the ship, I fired up the data pad and began poring over the details. The facility was well-guarded, with extensive security measures. This wasn't going to be easy.

Aisha peered at the schematics over my shoulder. "Looks like we'll need to hit fast and hard to have any chance of getting in and out undetected."

Selene nodded. "Agreed. And we'll need a distraction to keep the guards busy while we grab the diamonds."

I tapped the screen thoughtfully. "I think I've got an idea for that. But it's still risky as hell."

Dr. Vance crossed her arms. "Well, at this point, I suppose any plan is better than no plan. What do you have in mind?"
