Book 2 - Chapter 3 - The Diamond Heist

"Alright, here's what I'm thinking," I began, zooming in on the facility's docking bay. "Instead of trying to break into this fortress, we hit the diamond shipment before it even arrives."

The others leaned in, catching on.

"We board the transport ship carrying the gems while it's still in transit," I explained. "That way, we avoid having to deal with the full security compliment."

Aisha nodded slowly. "Not a bad plan. Easier to take down a few guards on a ship than storm a whole complex."

"Exactly." I pulled up the transport's flight plan. "And according to this, the shipment is scheduled to arrive in two day's time. If we move quickly, we can intercept them before they even reach the facility."

Selene considered this, then turned to me. "And how exactly do you propose we board the transport undetected?"

"Leave that part to me," I replied. "I've got a few tricks up my sleeve for situations like this."

She raised an eyebrow but didn't argue further.

Dr. Vance chimed in next. "Even if we manage to board the transport, won't they have security measures in place for the diamonds themselves?"

I nodded, pulling up another schematic.

"Good point. According to this, the gems will be stored in a reinforced vault towards the rear of the ship. Cracking that won't be easy."

"So we'll need a way to bypass or disable the security systems," Selene reasoned. "Otherwise, we risk setting off alarms the moment we try to access the vault."

"Precisely." I zoomed in on the ship's layout, studying it intently. "If I can get us into the security monitoring room first, I should be able to slice into their systems and shut down any countermeasures."

Aisha cracked a wry grin. "Look at you with all the answers, Jack. And here I thought we were just making this up as we went along."

I allowed myself a small smirk. "What, you didn't think I'd have a plan? Come on, I'm hurt."

Dr. Vance cleared her throat, all business once more. "So we board the transport, infiltrate the security station, disable the vault's defenses, then grab the diamonds and get out clean. Is that about the shape of it?"

I considered her summary, then nodded. "More or less, yeah. Of course, the execution will be the tricky part."

"When is it not with you, Jack?" Selene quipped, the smallest of smiles playing at the corners of her mouth.

I spread my hands in a what-can-you-do gesture. "Hey, if you wanted an easy paycheck, you picked the wrong line of work."

With that, I pushed away from the console. "Alright, we've got two days to get prepped and make our rendezvous with that transport. Let's get moving, people - those diamonds aren't gonna steal themselves.

For the next two days, we worked tirelessly to prepare. I fine-tuned our infiltration plan, going over every detail until I was satisfied we'd covered all contingencies. Selene cross-checked the transport's security protocols, developing countermeasures for any systems that might give us trouble. Even Vance lent a hand, using her technical know-how to craft specialized breaching tools.

Finally, the appointed hour arrived. We powered up our ship and set a course to intercept the diamond transport along its prearranged flight path. As the target ship appeared on our sensors, I took us in low and fast.

"Alright people, this is it," I called out, securing my weapons harness. "Selene, be ready to cloak us and match velocities the second we're in range."

"Copy that," she replied, her fingers dancing across the co-pilot control panels.

Moments later, the ship's cloaking systems flickered online, rendering us practically invisible. We accelerated until we were just paces away from the larger transport ship's hull.

"Cutting main thrusters," I muttered. "Selene, match our speed exactly and bring us up alongside."

With deft movements, Selene complied. Soon, we were coasting alongside the bulky transport, near enough to reach out and touch if not for the vacuum between us.

I glanced over at Aisha. "You're up. Get that airlock ready for breach, and I'll take us in."

She nodded tightly, heading back to the rear compartment to ready our entry gear. I returned my focus forward, lining up our docking vectors with surgical precision.

"Nice and easy," I told Selene. "We only get one shot at this."

She simply grunted in acknowledgment, her eyes intent on the control displays.

With a gentle nudge of maneuvering thrusters, I brought us into position alongside an airlock on the transport's outer hull. In one fluid motion, I extended our boarding tube and signaled for Aisha to initiate the breach sequence.

The armored umbilical snaked out, slamming home against the transport's airlock with enough force to temporarily fuse the molecular bonding surfaces. Aisha did the rest, slicing through security protocols to trigger the remote override and force the enemy hatch open.

Within moments, we had an ingress point. I glanced over at the others.

"Remember, from here on out it gets loud. Let's get those diamonds and get out before they know what hit them."

In a flash, we were through the newly breached airlock and inside the transport's corridors. Aisha took point, plasma rifle at the ready, while Selene hung back to cover our rear. Vance stuck close beside me as we moved swiftly but silently down the dimly lit hallway.

Up ahead, Aisha held up a closed fist - the hand signal to halt. She gestured towards an upcoming intersection, then made a slicing motion across her throat. Guards.

I nodded in understanding, unslinging my rifle as we stacked up against the bulkhead. Peering carefully around the corner, I spotted two armored sentries patrolling the cross-corridor.

Moving quickly, I signaled Aisha to get ready. As the guards turned to continue their patrol, I struck. Two precise shots dropped them where they stood before they even had a chance to raise an alarm.

"Move up," I hissed, waving the others forward as we secured the intersection. "That was the easy part. The vault's just down this way."

Vance looked shaken but resolute as we hurried onward through the twisting passageways. After several tense minutes of creeping progress, we arrived at a heavily reinforced hatchway - the outer security door for the vault.

"This is it," I muttered, waving Selene forward. "Get that panel open and start your hack."

She nodded tightly, pulling out her code slicer and setting to work as the rest of us took up overwatch positions. Tense seconds ticked by as Selene's fingers flew across the haptic interface, worming her way through layer after layer of encryption.

Just as I was beginning to worry time had run out, the panel beeped and flashed green. The vault door slid open with a pneumatic hiss, revealing the inner strongroom beyond.

"Nice work," I told Selene with a clipped nod. "Let's grab those diamonds and get out of here before they..."

A distant alarm began to wail, bathing the corridors in flashing red emergency lights. I cursed under my breath.

"You had to say it, didn't you?" Aisha groused, hefting her rifle.

I shrugged, not taking the bait. "Just get that vault cleared out fast. We're about to have company."

Without wasting any more time, we rushed into the vault. Prying open the reinforced storage containers, we quickly began scooping up handfuls of the gleaming gemstones and stuffing them into our packs.

"Hurry!" I urged, keeping watch down the corridor with my rifle raised. "We'll hold them off as long as we can!"

Even as I spoke, the first of the security teams came pounding around the far corner, weapons blazing. I returned fire in controlled bursts, forcing them to take cover as Aisha added her plasma rifle to the fray.

"We're almost loaded!" Selene called out over the din of battle. "Just a few more and we'll be set!"

A hail of return fire shredded the bulkhead near my head, showering me with molten shrapnel. I flinched instinctively, but kept up my barrage.

"Then I'd suggest wrapping it up fast!" I shouted back. "Our window's closing!"

Just then, a gruff voice boomed over the ship's intercom.

"Drop your weapons and surrender immediately! This is Captain Vossk of the Kaari Syndicate - you're completely surrounded and have no way to escape!"

I swore under my breath. So we weren't just stealing from a random smuggler after all - we'd hit a rival criminal outfit. No wonder security was so heavy.

"What do we do, Jack?" Aisha called out, ducking a fresh round of fire.

Before I could answer, Vossk's voice rang out again.

"I don't know who you blundering fools are, but you've made a grave mistake crossing the Kaari! Surrender now, and perhaps I'll let you live as our guests for a few years."

I gritted my teeth, weighing our options. If we tried to shoot our way out, we'd be hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. But surrendering wasn't much better - being imprisoned by a ruthless crime syndicate basically amounted to a death sentence.

That's when Selene caught my eye, nodding towards the vault. I followed her gaze to see the last of the diamonds being stowed away.

A daring plan began to form. It was crazy, suicidal even...but it just might work.

"Listen up!" I shouted. "We're not going to surrender, and we're not getting captured! We're going to detonate the vault!"

Vance stared at me in alarm. "Are you insane? That will destabilize the entire reactor core!"

"Exactly!" I roared, already triggering the remote detonators. "So brace yourselves, because we're about to get blown clear!"
