“Wait, what?” Sophie looks at the floating holographic screen that appeared in front of her. She moves around, the screen follows her, always remaining in the center of her vision. “I don't remember buying any new VRMMORPG. Nor do I remember falling asleep with my headset on...”
Sophie looks at the floating screen, wondering why there are only four classes to choose from, in the other RPGs she played there were at least ten classes. She then noticed there was an arrow for a drop down tab for three of the classes. Experimenting, Sophie reached out and touched the arrow next to the Martial class.

Affliction Specialist
Blood Artist
Blood Hunter
Warlock
"OK this is weird. Some of these classes I have heard of in RPGs. But these special classes…. these are something else."
Sophie tries to look around the screen in the center of her vision, but doesn't see anything besides blackness. Her eyes get drawn back to the warning about the short life span. "What's a Blood Artist? I know what the other basic classes are, but none of these special classes. Except Warlock, that I know."
Another pop-up appears:
Affliction Specialist: special assassin class; uses poisons and necrotoxins to break down your enemy's body. Killing them from the inside out. Affliction Specialists will always kill their target, even if their target kills the specialist first.
Blood Artist: special assassin class; one becomes akin to a vampire when they accept the role of a Blood Artist. A Blood Artist uses their own blood and their enemy's blood as weapons and to bend people to the user's will. Blood Artists usually end up power hungry.
Blood Hunter: Blood Hunters are the bane to everything. A Blood Hunter uses anything as a weapon, as well as poisons and potions to help with their hunt. Blood Hunters can ingest the blood of monsters to acquire certain powers of those monsters. Most Blood Hunters go insane from their use of monster blood. The more accomplished Blood Hunters can use hand drawn rune magic.
Warlock: spell blade that comes with a high cost. A Warlock gains their powers by giving up the thing they hold dearest. There is a way to get back that which was lost, but at a very high price.
Sophie looked over the list again, thinking. “OK, the Warlock is different from D&D's Warlock. I still don’t have the slightest idea what is going on…”
Another screen popped up:
“CHOOSE A CLASS, THIS WILL DECIDE ON WHERE YOU SPAWN IN THE WORLD OF SCALVIA.”
“Scalvia…. Yeah, not ringing a bell. It would be ironic if I had been isekai’d….” Trailing off, Sophie’s eyes went wide, her heart racing, flashes of memories came flooding back. More like sensations and noises than actual memories: people screaming, heat, something jagged being dragged across her torso, metal screaming as it was torn in two. “FUCK!!!!!!!” Collapsing to her hands and knees, Sophie was gasping for air, tears streaming down her face. “The war wasn’t supposed to come to America. What happened to my ‘66 Mustang Fastback? Please tell me it was destroyed so that my idiot brother can’t drive it.” After a long while, Sophie wiped the tears away then stood back up and looked over the long list of classes. Tapping her chin, Sophie pondered what the best choice for her would be. In MMOs, or even D&D, I was the healer. Either the cleric or the paladin. Do I embrace what I know or do something else?
The cleric tab expanded:
Cleric: a fighter class that specializes in healing spells, can also control the battlefield with wide area spells.
“Looks like the basic starting equipment for a cleric: medium armor, a weapon that is either one or two handed and a shield, with a holy symbol.” A sad smile crosses her lips, thinking back to the older sister that Sophie once had but lost to suicide. “Lucy was an edge lord,” looking over the special classes. “I want to become the edge lord in her honor, I always played the healer to counter her reckless play style. So let’s look at the Special classes.”
Affliction Specialist: stealth or not-- entirely your choice. Proficiency with small blades and short swords. Gain Herbology skill on acceptance of class.
Blood Artist: control the very blood in the veins of your enemies. You will be feared as a blood artist.
Blood Hunter: ruthless fighting machine, gain expertise in all weapons; including improvised weapons. Proficient with the basic magicks. Gain Herbology skill on acceptance of class. You will be treated as an outcast, tavern keepers would rather feed the sick and dying than feed you. Only plus is that you have coin.
Warlock: What will you give up to seek power?
Tapping her chin with a finger, Sophie ponders her options. “I don’t want to be a warlock. The memories of Lucy are the most precious to me right now. Affliction Specialist sounds the most edge lord.”
Do you wish to choose to be an Affliction Specialist?
YES NO
Trying to mentally accept it prompt, she was surprised to find it had worked.
