The walk back to the small plaza was almost to short, my time was preoccupied with trying to get a good routine on the coin circling my hand. The easy part was rolling it across my knuckles, the hard part was getting it to the other side using my power. My fine controls on this were practically zero, I did just recieve this power this morning but the System did a good job on making this feel pretty natural. I've been sitting on this bench for around 20 minutes just trying to get it down, once I tried to just do a orbit on a finger but that takes more concentration then it should so I go back to the rolling across my fingers. After a couple of rotations I deem it decent enough and venture to the place of my future profits.
The Guild.
The doors seem plenty big, I decide to not make myself a target and instead of kicking it I simply open the door. My first impression of what I see was that this place was definitely... unique.
"THE HELL DID YOU SA-"
"-WEAR TO GOD IF YOU-"
"-GODDAMMIIIIIIT AIDEN!-"
Plenty of potential people with talent brawling around the place, practically prostrating themselves to a seasoned anime watcher. I turn my gaze away from the fights and walk around the edges of the building at a slow pace, as to appear unnaffected by this. Obviously this was new to me but I decide to keep a deadpan face and quickly make my way over to a Guild employee. They were in a almost bank like booth, a table with papers seperating us. I walk up to the booth and steal a glance at the pictures on the obvious bounty papers, they depicted different types of beasts. I gave a sigh of relief at this place being a adventurer sign up place but quickly turned it into a cough, my character is already falling apart without even talking.
"Hello sir, I see your new here. Are you here to make a bounty?"
The person speaking to me was a rather tall and muscular man with jet black hair, sharp eyes, and a friendly smile. The man was a bit offputting with his tough appearence and his rough voice, but he seems nice enough. I shake my head no.
"Ahem, i'm here to become an adventurer."
His smile reaches a bit higher at my statement, his smile almost becoming full teethed. A bit creepy but don't judge a book by it's cover right?
"Please fill out this paper then please, after that you can hand it to me."
He hands me said paper, and even a pencil. I nod and take them both over to a table far away from the still going on brawl. I decide to finish this quickly and put the coin on the table, just in case I need it. I fill out the rather questions, they're simple questions like whats my name, age and even previous occupation. Oh, it also asked me if I had any unique supernatural abilities. Why yes, I do indeed have superpowers. Jokes aside this confirms the fact that superpowers was a thing here, they're even so different from each other that they ask you to give a brief description of it. I just call it Ferrokinesis and say I can control metal with it, basically all my knowledge about it so far. I've yet to test on how much I can lift, how far and how long. I go back to doing my coin rolling exercise and hand the paper back to the employee. He gives the paper a once over and then puts it down on the table, he then leans down to grab something thats below the table. He brings out a small silver metallic card, I suppose its a business card? He lays the card on top of the middle of the paper I filled out, the card then starts shaking a litle bit. Writing starts appearing across the card, soon enough I recognize my name on the card. Eventually the writing stops and the employee picks up the card and then presses his thumb down on the back, I hear a small searing noise as his thumb glows a bit redder. He finishes his task and releases his thumb off the card, he then shows me the palm of his hand.
It was a glowing red and was releasing a small amount of steam, he gives me a big smile once more as if he was showing his most prized possession. He then stops whatever he was doing to his hand and it returns to normal, he then points to the coin I was using to practice with.
"I showed you mine, now you gotta show me yours."
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
Eh, didn't ask what yours was so that definitely doesn't make sense. But I've gotten this far so I decide to just go along with it, I stop messing with the coin and I start flipping it instead. After about 3 flips, the employee is giving me a raised eyebrow at my theatrical show, I freeze the coin middar halfway down on the fourth flip. Then the coin starts rotating like a gyroscope, slowly speeding up until it I reach my limit on something this small. I'm not exactly sure on how fast it was going but it was at the stage where the afterimages were going so fast that it looked more like a ball floating, the employee seems to be impressed enough if his big eyes had anything to say about it. He gives me one more look before shaking his head side to side and holding up a hand, gesturing for me to stop. I comply and lower the still intact coin onto the table, the action I put it through was pretty instense. I do feel a little bad for the guy, we are kind of on a different power level. I don't doubt that if he wanted to he could reach out to grab my head and then start heating up his hands so my face started melting, if I wanted to I could probably kill him using the coin but for moral reasons I'd rather not. I probably couldn't outrun him though, and the nearest vein deposit is decently far enough away. At least 20 seconds off, a lot of face melting could happen in 20 seconds. And even then 20 seconds is a conservative estimate, I'd need more practice to get a more accurate guess.
The employees potential homicidal tendencies aside he does something else next to the thumprint, writing something down with his heated up pinky nail. He hands me the card after hes done with it, the card quickly cools off. I take a look at the writing and get surprised with something nice.
Remember your beginning's, Ethan Dualit.
Huh, he's really good at writing with his pinky. I feel a smile at the sign of friendship, but business comes first. I ask him about what I actually do, he responds with a scripted speech.
"A adventurers duty is to maintain a safe level of comfort for their kingdom, different duties are delegated to different tiers of ability. All adventurers start at the 10th Rank, this means they will do small tasks like small monster extermination and menial tasks. After a certian threshold is reached or a great task is done then they can elevate to a higher level, such as Rank 9. This Ranking system goes all the way up to 1st rank, at that point they will be considered great hero's of their kingdom. I hope you strive for this and the betterment of humanity."
I take a look at the card, it has my rank. Rank 10. I suppose my coin trick wasn't enough to pop up a rank but I suppose the system won't bend for me. I take a look at the papers on the desk, looking for a suitable task for my rank. Now that I know about the Ranks I recognize that they have numbers on their top right, I didn't spot and numbers lower then 7. The one at 7 was a subujation quest for a nearby goblin village, this makes me a bit curious for harder stuff. I decide to set my sights for more achievable goals, I grab a different subjugation quest for something more familiar. Ethan notices my choice and reaches out.
"For quests you'll need to present your adventurers card so we can designate that as your current task, this will also give us a clue to where you are if something happens to you."
Makes sense I suppose, I hand over the card. He does the same trick he did before with my application paper, this time though only a line of text changes. Ethan gives me a nod after its done, I take the card back and look at it. On the bottom right corner it has the word Quest with the word None underneath it, now its changed to the quest I chose. Subjugating a wolf den, this will reward me with the type of currency here. The symbol for the currency is actually the same as the cent one, a vertical line going through a lowercase c. Makes my assumption that they deal with coins here right, even if they go farther then my universe with it. I gain 100 of whatever the coins are, although I can't tell if this is a good price or not 100 is still a big number. Most likely its something like copper coins, if my theory about metal coins are correct.
I decide to stop wasting daylight and instead get over to where the map is pointing me to, Ethan was kind enough to show the map on the back of the paper to me. I grab my now cooled off coin and take my leave.
I make my way through the Guild once more, the brawl has calmed down by now, and start heading out of the village again. At this rate people will start suspecting I live in the forest and only come here to get drunk at this rate, always leaving when the sun starts setting. I pay no heed to my suspicous actions and venture into the woods, to fufill my first task as an adventurer.
Just thinking that gave me some goosebumps.
-Timeskip-
Ahh, the ground is just as hard as I left it. It's at a point where I'd rather have gotten some web manipulation, a spider hammock would be pretty sweet. But you take the good with the bad, having a veritable arsenal of any kind of ore to make any kind of weapon is still pretty good. Speaking of ores, I would rather not experience the attack I had this morning. I grab a nearby vein, another copper one, and use it as a psuedo coccon to keep me safe. I wrapped the copper aorund me like a blanket, of course keeping a foot of space inbetween.
Hopefully tents are cheap here.
