Chapter 7: Hazel

Chapter 7: Hazel

Hazel was in a lot of trouble. Even with medications, she could not seem to hold her motion sickness down. She has gone through 2 paper bags already, and no one was willing to sit near her anymore.

"I want to go home" she wished for it from the bottom of her heart. She was forced to attend this shool trip against her wills. She did everything she could in preparation for this day. She lied to her parent about parent-teacher night. She burrowed the trip pamphlet and even took a cold shower in order to get sick for an entire week. Precisely how long the camp would go on for. It was as if god was against her. Charlie, her adorable pet dog somehow manage to dig the hidden pamphlet from the ground, and leave it there only to be discovered by her mother.

Hazel was naturally timid in nature, with a short stature, and an adorable face; she seemed like a small animal that needed to be taken care of. The sunshine was reflected though her curly blond hair. Her window was fully opened; the coldness of the wind blowing against her face seems to help her feel somewhat better. She didn’t want to go on this trip in the first place since she knows this was exactly what was going to happen.

She loved reading more than anything else. Leaning toward fiction and fantasy most of the time. It was easier to read than interacting with people. Books are straight forward; you can read them better than most people she thought. Everything was going well until the panel appeared. The sudden stop from the bus quenched her already calm stomach. Taking the opportunity, Hazel quickly ran out of class 11-B bus. No one cared to look at where she was going. After a few minute, she started feeling better. Taking a look at the panel again, she was quite confused. She thought it was a hallucination in the first place, but this, this is real.

Hazel panicked, the number was getting closer to zero. She didn’t know what it was, but her trembling expressed her mood pretty well. Hazel was easily scared; she was being taken advantage a lot due to this trait. She couldn’t even watch the first few minute of supernatural the TV show, and that wasn’t even the scary bit. Fear of height, fear of the dark, fear of the unknown. Hazel was like a child in a teenage body.

She was growing quite well for her age, more than she had like unfortunately. With a bust threatening to spill out of her bra every time she moves, it was impossible for Hazel to do anything physical such as sport. Boys started giving her strange look when she started growing in six grade, 5 years later and she is still not used to people leering at her that way. She received a few love confessions over the years, but she knew they didn’t really like her for who she is. It just doesn’t seem sincere. “Why would you start a relationship over one simple love confession?” Hazel was not an old fashioned girl; it was just her shy personality getting her further away from the opposite gender.

The countdown reached zero, there was an earth wake followed shortly after that. Normally, panic would have seized Hazel and render incapable of moving, but the system made her fainted before she could do anything else. Hazel woke up with a slight headache. It was the same for other students around her. She stood up slowly, rubbing her eyes. “What’s going on?” Hazel was frightened by the scene around her. Nothing but strange plants and huge trees in the surrounding. The concrete road had disappeared, replace by hard and solid earth.

The three buses were in a circle area, like someone cut a circle section of earth and put it on another planet. Hazel startled to hyperventilated, but calmed down somewhat when she squeezed herself down under a tree. Other students were to confused and dazed to take notice of what was happening to Hazel. A panel was pop up again, she was greatly alarmed. “This panel again” she cried, but something seemed difference. She could read it this time, the content was quite confusing as well

Hazel didn’t know what this was completely about, but she does have a few guess in mind. “So I can sense danger huh? Don’t know if it is a curse or a blessing. I guess it’s the latter for a coward like me” she thought bleakly. She spends the rest of the day sitting in the same spot, seemingly exhausted to do anything else. She did notice a few people leave the bus and delve deeper into the jungle. She didn’t volunteer through; Hazel weak physique would only get in the way. Too tired to even walk toward the bus, she welcomed sleep with open arm.

It was quite dark when she wakes up. No electronic device seemed to be working so no one knows what time it was. Feeling thirsty, she walked back up in the bus to get some drink. On her way back, she could see people was setting down. A giant campfire was started, students and teacher were sitting around it, cooking their marshmallow or what not. Some teacher tried to lighten the mood up by singing a song, but no one was willing to follow along.

"Everybody is scared" Hazel realised. She was freaking out herself so she could somewhat relate to the people around her. Everything around them is mysterious, unexplainable. Human has always feared the unknown. Hazel got what she wanted, and sat down on her seat. She signed, wanting to take out a book and read it but there was just the only light provided was from the campfire and moon outside.

She was about to doze off again but a sudden feeling attacked her. She knows this well. It was fear. What was she scared of? Her sudden goose bump and sweaty hand weren’t helping her thinking clearly. Why am I feeling this way? Hazel thought. A memory quickly popped up in her head. The skill. Heighted fear. Am I in danger? She resists the urge to quickly ran out of the bus, seeking someone for help. She wanted to find a hole and crawl in it. Calming herself, she looked outside pass the windows. The looming darkness made her feels nothing but dread.

The danger is coming; I need somewhere to hide. Franticly looking around, she came up with a stupid idea. “Who cares if people think she is crazy if they found out what she was doing, there were no one on the bus with her after all” The school bus ceiling has a small rectangle box area that opened by pushing the lid. It is used to let natural wind flow in from the top during long travel. After a few tried, she managed to crawl up on top of the bus through the hole, getting stuck for a few min because of a certain part of her body couldn’t fit through the entrance. Her breathing was really hard now, she lied on top of the bus, forgotten her fear for a brief period.

Then it started. A loud scream was heard near the campfire. Looking in the direction of the sound, a students was standing there before he fell down. Or part of him that is. A creepy looking humanoid creature was holding the student bloody head. Everyone who saw what was going was stunned. As if time stopped, nobody knows what they were looking at. Why is there a bloody body lying there? IS this some kind of jokes? Hazel own screamed then broke the silence along with some others. As if on cue, more of those one eyed creature started jumping on another target, clawing and slashing their way into the human crowd.

IT WAS A TOTAL CHAOS. Students were running away, screaming, fell to their leg and shaking, crying. Some even tried to fight back. Alas, it was impossible. Although the human outnumbered the monster at least 4 to 1, they were like killing machine. Nothing could stop them. No one could fight back. Realising the hopeless situation. People either gave up or run away. There was no resisting whatever those monster can do to them.

After a while, seemingly bored with killing human that aren’t after to fight back; the Uromecks had another idea. They pulled some human away, killing the one that couldn’t walk by themselves. Why you ask? The Uromecks are cannibals. But even they had their own standards. They liked their meat fresh. They liked seeing terror in the eyes of their prey as they prepare their meal. It was horrible sure. But that’s just how it is. Think of it as human consumed their meat from killing animal. It wasn’t murdering of animal, just preparing food. Around 20 people were dragged by the Uromeck toward their camp. They didn’t care about the one that escape. Nothing could escape their keen sense of smell after all. It will just be a longer hunt for them.

Hazel was trying her best to keep herself from getting discovered. Her lips were red from blood because she bit herself. Her eyes were blurred with tears. She felt as if she could vomit any second; but there just weren’t anything left in her stomach to do so. When nothing could be heard anymore, Hazel lost her consciousness the second day that night. While she was passed out, the students whom managed to get way came back to the bus to take every supply away. They were scared out of the wit. But since they manage to get away, they considered themselves as survivor.

They would do anything to survive now! They blame themselves for being so naïve, sitting there resting while death surrounded them. Student’s was getting into group. Fight broke out from fighting for resources. A few students were heavily injured from fighting their own kind and not by the hand of monsters. Hazel was passed out on top of the bus through all this. The smell of blood masked her sense from the Human and Uromeck alike. She was lucky, but it wasn’t the end just yet.

In fact, it was just the beginning.
