Chapter 10: Hunted

Chapter 10: Hunted

The boss Uromeck was enjoying its nap, when a little one entered the camp and wake it up with urgent shout. Feeling sleepy, it was annoyed to be woken up abruptly like this. The boss holds absolute authority in this tribe. His word is the law, and he was used to making people waited for him, not the other way around. Last night was more satisfying than usual; his soldier had brought back some strange creature, although having not much meat, they were absolutely delicious.

He was in a much better mood than usual, that’s why he didn’t smash the Uromeck that had woken him up into pulp. “What’s the matter” he grunted. Noticing the displeased tone in his leader voice, the Uromeck was shaken in its boot (if it has one). “I’m extremely sorry esteemed leader, our elite soldiers and females had disappeared without a trace” a series of grunt and snort followed. “Disappeared, what on Galava do you mean by that?” he bellowed in rage, the Uromeck was so scared that its dropped on its feet and placed his head out, as if under the mercy of its leader. “I’m so sorry again esteemed leader, they just vanish without a trail. Not to mentioned, our entire meat house had been cleared out”

The male Uromeck was crying in tears from terror now. Without saying another word, the leader stormed out of its house, seeing it’s tribe standing there, and all the elite soldiers missing, it feels incredibly hatred and anger. It bellowed in rage “what on earth happen here, where are all the elite Uromeck”. The entire population put their head now. No one had an answer to their boss question. Hearing no response, the leader sat down on his throne, and started thinking.

It was a weak green Uromeck just like all of its tribe. The leader before was a tyrant, and liked to kill its own kind needlessly. In rage, it manages to poisoned the leader, before killing the previous leader with its own hand, and evolved to become the new leader.

There was no name between Uromeck, only one leader, a group of elite soldier and common Uromeck. Compare to the previous leader, it has brought it tribe to prosperity. Establishing rules and orders that must be followed. Only to find out that the hard trained soldiers of its tribe disappear in one night! “Is it a betrayal, no, couldn’t be, I’ve treated them with care and mercy beyond their imagination.

But the why did the meat house get cleared? Is it the slime, no, they never move far away from their den?” It must be a new threat the leader came into a conclusion. The appearance of new prey yesterday must have also brought along something else.

Something silent and deadly.

“From now on, accompanying each other in a group of two when you hunt. We must leave some sentry to guard the tribe when we are asleep. We are being attacked” The tribe was shocked. But it’s leader words were law, they could only obey. The leader started assigning groups that will hunt for food tonight. Since their elite soldier were gone and their food resources picked clean, the tribe must use all of its force to restock the meat tonight.

The leader wasn’t scared about being attack again by the unknown assailant. From what it can gather, in order to move through the tribe unnoticed, it must have been and extremely small group of individuals. Not to mentioned, the enemy probably specialised in assassination; which was why they choose to attack its tribe when they were at their weakest. The leader was in no mood to sit around anymore; it has personally chosen to hunt tonight. And its rage will only be relief when its covered in its enemy blood.

Observing from afar, on top of a tree. Kip could hear the bellow of rage from a formidable monster, which made him smiled in satisfaction. He wanted to go back to the cave, but he must know what the Uromeck decided to do first. Leaving them alone when they are extremely agitated may not be a good idea. Kip could see the Uromecks started leaving their village in groups of two. Ah, so they think number is a good idea huh? This might be true for him right now, but it doesn’t mean the same for his pet slime. He was extremely tired now, only having 10% of his stamina remaining. Securing himself in a hollow crevice above a giant tree, he slowly falls asleep; not before leaving a command to his slime “Kill and devour anything that get close to this tree”

After Kip left, Raven went with Hazel back to where the buses were. She wanted to bring her bag back to the cave, since she had nothing on her except the clothes she was wearing. The girls didn’t talk much. Alone the way, Raven picked up rocks and throw it at random branches to practice her throwing skill. She is at beginner level 9 now, so she considered herself pretty good. Hitting four out of five targets every time, even while moving.

Hazel was surprised, she praised her friend accuracy at first, not knowing that it was a skill. After Raven told her about existence of skills, Hazel thought her was a little lacking. “Your skill is extremely valuable, sensing the danger means avoiding trouble before it even begins” Raven explained. Hazel just nodded. If your skills are produced based on your configuration, it just means that she was a scaredy cat.

She asked Raven about Kip slime summoning skill, but the other girl look just as confused. After arriving at the bus stop, Raven was excited to find out that her bag is still there. Someone dug her clothes out why searching for resources, but she didn’t mind. She didn’t want Kip to get bored looking at her wearing the same clothes yesterday. Bringing her bag outside, Raven was surprised she heard a Hazel scream.

Looking at the source, she saw a boy coming closer to Hazel, who looked terrified. “I won’t hurt you. Just hand over your resources. And I’ll let you go” the boy said while putting his hand up. But he seemed annoyed at Hazel scared whimpers. “Everything was looted last night. Why do you think we have anything to give you? The boy turned to Raven, looking up and down at her until he revealed a lecherous expression. “Is it just two of you. Do you guys have a group?” Hazel was behind Raven now, both of them showed a disgust expression. “Don’t ask anymore question and leave, we don’t want anything to do with you”.

Seemingly unaffected by both of the girl hatred stare, he moved slowly toward the “Don’t be like that. The world has gone to crap now. You need someone strong to protect you. I can do that. You’ll just need to listen to what I said. I promise I won’t hurt you”.

Hazel chuckled, both are male but such different phrasing. Kip promised her that he will protect her with his life, and that he would never ask her to do something that will harm her. Yet it was obvious that this person wasn’t asking but threatening her to join him instead. She was about to throw the book she was holding as a shield at him, but before she could do that, a sickening thud accompanying a shrill scream could be hear.

Raven had taken out one of her largest rock and throw it straight at the boy head. People who wish to harm her, she will show no mercy. But she didn’t stop there, before the boys could properly stand up again, she throws another rock seemingly at the exactly same spot. Knocking him out.

“We need to hurry and leave, this place is not safe any longer. Other students may come back here” Raven hurriedly said, and walked back to the base, with Hazel followed closely behind. They made a few detour, spread out false trails, and made sure that they weren’t followed back to their base.

When the boy wakes up, it was already quite dark, he held his head in pain. “Those bitches, I’ll see where you will hide from me”. Seemingly didn’t notice two Uromecks standing behind him, his head was sliced into half before he could even realise he had been attacked.
