With Samson in the lead and Henderson right behind, Reggie tried to keep pace with Charisse, who lagged behind.
"I'm covering the rear; stay ahead of me," Charisse said.
Reggie nodded and kept twenty feet between him and Henderson. Their pace was too quick to sneak a peek at the combat log. An idea came to mind, and he deliberately kicked his foot mid-stride.

Reggie stumbled backward as soon as left foot hit the back of the right one. Landing hard on his back, the fall knocked the air out of his breath. He took a breath before pulling up his combat log;

Reggie was back in the city, lying on the ground before he could see anything in the log. Charisse is standing over him, her eyes wide and one hand holding Reggie's shirt.
"Stay with me," Charisse looked down the street before looking back at Reggie. "Can you heal yourself? That was a bad fall, and I'm not sure how concussions work in this system."
"I'm ok," Reggie said. "Just wanted to check combat log without it being obvious."
"And you thought, never mind, check what you need to." Charisse stepped back and scanned the street.
Reggie quickly pulled up the log and saw the successes for himself and Henderson; not wanting to keep Charisse waiting, he dropped the log and sat up. Charisse walked over to him and offered a hand; he grasped it, and she pulled him to his feet.
"What were you looking for?" Charisse said as she took up position next to Reggie. They both started walking, following Henderson and Samson.
"Just checking a spell effect," Reggie said. He pondered if the resistance spell would trigger an opportunity for the player to resist the mind control or if it needed an outside stimulus.

"No, er, yes." Reggie sighed and gathered his thoughts. Then, he decided to lay it all out quickly. "Yes, and I have a spell that boosts your mental defenses; I want to ensure it was successful."
Charisse lowered an arm that Reggie hadn't realized was near his shoulder. A momentary glimpse of a knife blade before it was sheathed. "Don't both checking; just keep trying to cast." Charisse looked down the street. "We gotta catch up."
Reggie nodded and quickly gathered mana to cast a spell on Charisse again.

"Sorry, he tripped back there," Charisse said.
Reggie struggled with how to support her story without lying. "I fell, kicked my foot." He said and saw Samson and Henderson clench their lips together not to laugh.
Reggie gathered mana and tried casting Fortify Mind on them, pushing down any anger from their amusement.

"I apologize," Samson said with a little bow. "We all stumble, but let us delay no more." He turned and started jogging in the direction of the Lady's house.
"We could just let him go alone," Reggie said softly.
"No, we finish this," Charisse said. She took off, and Reggie and Henderson followed.
Arriving together, Charisse reached the tree first and knocked upon it. A moment later, the wall started lowering. Before it was beneath the ground, Samson jumped over and ran to the door. Not wanting to raise suspicion, Reggie followed.
The door opened into darkness; Samson went first, followed by Reggie. Once through, bright light quickly replaced the black as they stood in the foyer. Marshal stood next to some bright lights.

To the right of Marshal, there was another person, but Reggie couldn't make out who it was from the lights. Samson knelt and held out the jewels to Marshal.

Following Samson's lead, Reggie knelt as well. A hand reached out from the light and grasped the package from Samson.
"Ah, you were successful! Excellent! Let me give you your reward." The Lady's voice said as the bright lights disappeared. She stepped forward, leaned next to Samson, and whispered something into his ear.

Reggie couldn't hear what was said. His skull started to hurt as he strained his ears as if that would help. Samson slowly stood up and left through the door. Henderson was next.

Still straining to hear what was whispered but getting nothing, Reggie waited for her to whisper into his ear. Thankfully he was next as he felt her presence before the feeling of her face brushing against his hair.
"There is a traitor amongst your group. Kill the others, then come back and sit by my side." She said. The words were thick like honey coating his mind, trying to seep into his thoughts.

"As you wish," Reggie said, forcing the words out while swallowing back the rising bile. He stood up and stepped out the door, placing a hand on his chest as he gathered mana and healed himself.

Right after he gathered his mana, pain exploded in his side. He managed to try a healing spell before he slumped to his knees.

Charisse raised a hand to swing her blade into Reggie's neck. An almost bored expression across her face as she thrust.
A hand appeared over Reggie and caught Charisse's wrist. Henderson stood next to Reggie.
"Ah, you wish to die first," Charisse said. Her hand released the dagger; Reggie's and Henderson's eyes watched it fall before it bounced off Reggie and clattered to the ground.
The momentary distraction was broken by the shine of another blade slicing through the air. Charisse's short sword swung and cut into Henderson's shoulder. Henderson screamed in pain and let go of Charisse's other wrist that he'd been holding.

Charisse swung with impossible swiftness. Reggie wasn't sure how, but Henderson managed to get his sword in the way of the shortsword blade. Charisse rolled to the side to stand between Henderson and Reggie.
Reggie stepped back to keep outside her blade and saw Samson standing on the other side of Henderson. The sound of a heavy click, the door closed and locked. Reggie opened his mouth to get Samson to help stop Charisse, but a glazed look in the merchant's eyes and his draw blade gave all the info Reggie needed. Pulling his mace off of his back, Reggie shouted to Henderson.
"I'll stop…." Reggie said but was interrupted.

Charisse threw her dagger again; this time, it slammed into Reggie's chest, his leather armor slowing it but not stopping the sharp blade from digging under his right collarbone. Reggie hadn't even seen her pull out the blade, and a quick glance revealed it was the same one she'd stabbed him with earlier.
Pulling the dagger out, he cast it far to the side with his left hand as the right moved into place for more healing. He angled his clenched fist so the mace didn't accidentally hit him as he healed.

"Go fetch," Reggie said as the blade rattled in the dark. He lifted the mace to swing at Charisse. Before he could swing down, she rolled back and away from Henderson and Reggie.

Henderson didn't seem surprised at Reggie's healing. He stepped away from Reggie and kicked Samson hard enough to knock the man onto his rear.
"Can you bring her to her senses?" Henderson said.
Reggie watched as a dagger appeared in Charisse's hand. He was unsure if she pulled it out of a hidden pocket or if it was magical. Worried the Lady would get involved or involve some of her henchmen, Reggie gathered mana to place a blessing on the area.

Putting the focus of his gaze back on Charisse, he raised his mace into the air and called upon the power of Tempus to bless and protect those with good in their heart. A wave of energy and calm started to ebb like little waves crashing against him.
Briefly, the atheist voice in the back of his mind rebelled, but he quieted that with the statement that this was just a game. Then, squashing further protests from that voice, he focused on Charisse, who was moving to place Reggie between her and Henderson.

"You got it wrong; I'm not under anyone's control; this I'm doing for fun," Charisse said, a smile that unnerved Reggie.
Seeing her without a weapon, he swung with his mace as he gathered mana.

Charisse simply reached behind her briefly, and when her hand came back into sight, it had another dagger. It looked the same as the one Reggie held, causing him to glance down at it to make sure he did still have the blade in hand. When he looked back up at Charisse, both of her hands moved and were now empty.

"What?" Charisse shook her head slightly. Then, her right foot snapped up, and it slammed into Henderson's head behind her. With a thud, Henderson dropped to the ground.
As Charisse focused on pulling her bound hands under her, Reggie swung with his mace.

Henderson didn't move as Reggie tried healing him. A groan from Charisse pulled his attention to a more active threat. Reggie stood up, mace in hand as he approached Charisse.
"Charisse, I want you to tell the lady to go fuck herself," Reggie said.
"What?" Charisse shook her head slightly.
Reggie lifted his mace and repeated his statement.
"Ok, I'll tell her the next time I see her," Charisse said. Her eyes were wide and darting around as if she was trying to see everywhere.
"No, I mean, say it now," Reggie said. He kept an eye on the movement of her shoulders for any signs of her getting free of the bonds.
"Fuck the lady," Charisse said. "Is that it?"
"Yes," Reggie sighed as tension fled his body. "Also, I think you killed Henderson.
"Oh fuck no," Charisse stood up, her arms still bound behind her. She ignored Reggie, quickly raising the mace, and ran to Henderson. She pulled out another dagger from some holster in her back and quickly cut through the ropes before kneeling next to Henderson's body.
"Reggie, find Samson and go find room at an Inn," Charisse said.
"But," Reggie sputtered before he looked around for the merchant.
"I'll clean up here," Charisse said.
"No, whatever you do, we do together," Reggie said as he gathered mana.
