Chapter 31

The Technician reformed himself soon enough, and came after Chase, who was back on his feet again. Albeit, very damaged and running low on energy. But he still wasn't staying down.

The Technician sent a barrage of lasers, of which Chase used his blade to deflect and absorb their energy. Then, the Technician sent his own blades of nanites to strike and barrage Chase from all sides like a hundred sharp, metal tendrils. Hitting, cutting, and pushing Chase to his limits as he tried to block the attacks. One blade struck him hard on the back while another one sliced him across the front and sent him tumbling against the wall.

Chase tried to get up but was immediately beaten down by several more strikes of the blades. The Technician prepared a finishing blow as he charged up his blaster. Chase tried to grab his sword, but the Technician had a metal tendril grab it from him. At the same time, though, Chase managed to get a hold on the sword as the tendril grabbed it and he used a burst of energy to slice it from the air.

Whirling back, the Technician growled and fired the charged up energy blast in retaliation, putting him down for good.

A cloud of smoke erupted in the room, as the Technician watched, scanning the blast to see if Chase really was destroyed. A green outline of Chase showed, unmoving but with his sword raised.

From the smoke, Chase emerged with lightning in his eyes. The Technician was pushed back in shock as Chase kept striking, slashing, and then stabbed the Technician right through the torso. The Technician, wanting to get him off, fired more blasts of energy but none could hit Chase as he stuck incredibly close and twisted the blade farther on the Technician's core.

In an act of desperation, the Technician fired a long beam of energy that exploded across the room and sent them both flying backwards and out through the broken window.

Falling from the tower, Chase continued to hold on to the Technician, intending to bring him crashing to the ground. But the Technician pushed Chase off of him and slammed him against the side of the building with his powers. Dragging him farther down through the building as the Technician continued to fall, then he morphed his legs into rocket boosters and righted himself enough to levitate in the air, still holding Chase right up against the wall.

"I. Win." The Technician growled, but Chase mustered enough strength to grab onto the sword that was still stuck out of the Technician, and he looked him right in his green eye.

"You have the right to remain silent." In a burst of light, Chase channeled every ounce of energy he had left and discharged it from his core. Releasing the power into his sword and electrocuting the Technician straight through his circuits.

The Technician shrieked as his whole body erupted with electricity, like a lightning storm burning every bit of his robotic body.

Chase wasn't safe from the damages either, not only was he draining the last of his energy supply, but the connection with the Technician was causing him to be electrocuted too, and this time he couldn't absorb the blast.

But he held in the pain for as long as he could as the Technician's screams flooded his ears. It was the only thing anyone could hear throughout the street and city.

The electric discharge dwindled down as Chase ran out of power, and he let go of the sword, unable to do anything further. And the Technician, completely fried from the experience, also had no energy left and let go of Chase. Three objects fell through the air and crashed to the asphalt ground of the streets. Dust clouded the streets from the impact, but thankfully there were very few bystanders around. Alice must've done a decent job at doing what Chase had told her, finally at least. Although, that's what Chase would be thinking if he wasn't hanging on desperately to his life.

Body broken, vision cracked, and energy all but gone, Chase laid on the ground inside a small crater, he wheezed heavily as his eyes struggled to see through the dust. Was it over? Was the threat neutralized? All he could do was hope, but at least he had gone down fighting. Images flashed through his head, this time they consisted of Marcus, Rowan, Calvin, Alice, and someone else that he didn't remember. An unexpected disappointment was what Chase felt, and it was only heightened.

A creek of metal sounded as rubble and debris shifted in the dust, and black nanites started crawling from the corners of the streets to one single point. As the dust finally settled, a charred and broken arm arose from a large crater in the middle of the street, lifting up a horrifically broken and scorched robot exoskeleton, like a zombie coming out of its grave, with sparks glitching its every movement.

"I will not be DEFEATED!" The Technician cried out in a static voice. "I will GET WHAT I DESERVE! And you will NOT STOP ME!!" The nanites tried repairing as much of the broken body as they could, but even with the unmatched power, the robot was too damaged to be fully repaired to its prime, but that didn't take away from its abilities. The Technician crawled out of the crater and slowly limped his way to Chase's body at frightening speeds, where he could do nothing but watch. "You're no Guardian! All this destruction is your fault! You don't care about justice, you don’t care about anything! You just follow the orders of snakes like a foul dog! Hiding under the guise of a hero! But the truth is! You're nothing more than A METAL PUPPET!!!" The Technician grabbed Chase by the neck and lifted him up in the air. He could feel a tightness wrap around his whole body, restricting him and crushing him. His body then started to turn green and black, from his legs to his chest and to his fingers. "And now I'm going to break you down to the same atoms that broke me, until there's nothing left of you. No body, no mind, and no memory. You'll die a failure."

Chase could feel his body slowly deteriorate and leave into the Technician, already repairing and incorporating Chase's materials into his own. He tried resisting, but there was no energy left in him to power any strength. He really was going to die a failure. The Technician would go on with his plans and grow stronger, until either someone else beat him or he simply won against the world. Chase wouldn't know but one thing was sure, he did care.

The Technician screamed again and jolted back as a new flash of electricity zapped his arm that was holding Chase. He dropped Chase to the ground and whirled around furiously.

Chase's senses suddenly returned to him as he regained a little energy. Looking around at what was happening, realization hit him hard at what he saw.

Alice stood across the street, clutching her side, but with an arm raised at the Technician with the Aurainium bracers active.

"You're wrong," Alice spat. "He does care about protecting people! He tries his best and sure does a good job at it. You're the one who caused all this! Not him!"

The Technician reached behind his shoulder and pulled out a taser dart and looked back at Alice, he crushed the dart in his hand and moved toward her but was only met with another taser dart that stunned his leg.

The Technician grunted and screamed, trying hard to move forward.

"And there's more where that came from."

The Technician growled again and suddenly Alice's bracers turned into green and black nanites and ripped themselves off her arms and absorbed into the Technician.

"Uh, oh."

"It’s time natural selection caught up to someone as annoying and asinine as you!" The Technician's stunned arm disappeared into his body, as his other free arm morphed into a machine gun. "Die!"

“No!” Chase shouted in his mind. Alice had saved Chase, but she was completely vulnerable to the Technician. He couldn't die, not yet when there were still people who needed him. He needed to do something quick, he looked to the side and spotted his sword lying on the ground near enough for him to reach, it must've fallen out of the Technician when they fell. Then, not too far, he saw a fire hydrant pretty close to where the Technician was standing and he remembered the moment from before when the Technician ran away when it started to rain. Alice had given him one last chance to stop the Technician, one last bit of hope that he could save at least someone, and he wasn't going to waste it.

He reached for the sword, hands shaking but determined, grabbing onto it by the blade, and then he aimed it at the fire hydrant, placing all his hope and energy into these crucial moments. The sword glistened with all the hope in his heart as it spun through the air, soaring by as the Technician started rapid firing and she ducked behind a car in hopes of surviving, until eventually the sword met its mark. The fire hydrant didn't even see it coming as the blade sliced the plug clean off and immediately a geyser of water shot into the air and came crashing down on the Technician. His entire exposed and broken body, which was burned, electrocuted, and now soaked with a high pressure hydro pump, crumbled to the ground as he short circuited, the electric discharge was like having front row seats to a lightning storm.

His screams could be heard all across the city and probably farther. And Chase laid back down on the ground, relieved but also still hoping that everything would be alright.

Police officers and ambulances arrived on the scene at almost the same time, and the last thing Chase saw before blacking out were the masked faces of police and Marcus.
