Chapter 3 - Growing up

That title… I thought my mind was going to cleave in half from excitement when reading that. Magic? If there is elves the possibility of magic always wandered my mind if this was true, holy hell wouldn’t that be cool. As my head was about to explode I was interrupted

Vestele had sat herself beside me staring at the book and me with a look of both happiness and confusion

“Little Pharom, what are you reading?”

Guess there is no point hiding it anymore

“This book, the mystery of magic but it’s really hard to read”

Vestele smile got even wider when she heard my reply “Only two years old and already interested in reading, you know how to make your parents happy don’t you” this was the face of a proud parent without a doubt. The look she held was so beautiful it was mesmerizing, thinking this stuff about you own mother is definitely not normal..

As my gaze was lingering on the line of creepy I snapped out of it “What is magic?” I mean I don’t know what magic is yet as a child do I?

Vestele’s proud look persisted even though I asked that question “It’s a way to bind the different essences in the world to do you bidding” She quickly spoke up again “ I mean it’s like this little Pharom, you know the fire we have in the corner you can summon or control that fire, the same with wind and the water in the cold, do you understand”

I couldn’t help but frown, I actually understood the first time, being a youngster and all was starting to get to the point of annoying.

Well can’t be helped I thought as I put on the kindest smile I could muster up “Yes mother”

“But how do you perform this thing called magic?” I said while looking upwards towards her in a serious manner.

Mother thought I looked cute when I tried to be serious as a 2 year old, so she did what she usually did ruffled around my hair messing it up -.-. Well I didn’t have much to begin with so I wouldn’t pout very long.

“It’s hard to explain, you are too little to think about such things, when you get older I will tell you all about it okay?”

Ah fuck… Age shit again, I hate life…

“You promise?

Vestele shined up like a bright star as she quickly embraced me tight

“Yes”

Ahh being young sure is awesome

As mother returned to the kitchen I continued to decipher the book, I mean she did not say anything about me reading right? After 3 days of painful fighting with the book I finally read through it. The content was rather disappointing, it only explained the different elements that could be conjured with the right methods but mentioned nothing about the methods...

Surprisingly this world had far more elements than I thought that could be conjured and controlled. Except from the norm such as fire and water there were life, destruction, death, wood and other more strange ones. Usually people didn’t have affinity to more than one, without affinity it was extremely hard to control any element therefore you had to be born with it. Luckily almost every living being had some amount of affinity in any of the numerous elements. Finding out your affinity could only be done through special magical tools.

Huh, so magic training is like privilege depending how rare those magical items are.. Well my first goal in this world should probably be to get a hold of one. I mean becoming a magician would be so awesome..

Days went by and I read the other two books, one which was a cooking book, obviously it didn’t really peak my interest as much as the first one but it was still something to keep my mind occupied. There were also some weird ingredients in there that was definitely out of the norm.  The possibilities of there being monsters and other beings in this world were becoming more and more likely. I mean how awesome wouldn’t that be, me fighting monsters with magic, living in an MMO would just be awesome. Promises of the future made my entire being tingle!

The third book was about the different races of the world and the normal characteristics of them. To my surprise there were actually Humans in this world. But they were described as greedy and destructive; even if these have always been the truth, no one would openly admit it. Therefore this book was most likely written by some other race.

All around in this world the races that inhabited was elves, dwarfs, demons, beast races and humans and under them subspecies except in the case of humans they had none. Even if many subspecies of the elves were mentioned no information regarding white haired elves could be found. It clearly stated that elves preferred to live in naturist areas around the world, most of them lived in something called Denrel, the wood realm. But we didn’t seem to care much for nature in my family at least not to a fanatic level. This was also an icy realm not one covered by wood, strange.

Days past by and I couldn’t help grow more and more impatient, I had the chance to become a magician which one could only dream of becoming, how could I not? I had to ask mother, she replied firm and direct “I will teach you the day you turn 6 years old, okay?”

Damn 3 years and 167 days until then, can I hold it that long?

I tried to put on the cutest little pity face I could possibly bring forth “Mother can’t we begin a little earlier, please? I love you”

My attack did indeed crunch her armor a little but to my surprise she held firm, this was most likely something she had thought thoroughly through. My attempt had failed, back to another 3 years and 167 days of boring life..

Life in the cabin continued slowly, all I did was use my interesting super power to try scanning the surrounding area. I realized that after staying concentrated for some time my energy would be completely depleted, it seemed like scanning the area with my senses was not without its restraints. But what more could I do? Life in the cabin was just boring, they wouldn’t even let me out, I mean any normal mother and father would let their 3 year old child out in the freezing blizzard like environment right??

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

As a two years passed by my presence sensor (This is the name I gave it) had evolved even further, I could finally actually grasp my surroundings without actually seeing them. Before I could notice people in the surrounding area, then after a year I could finally sense their movement. Knowing what direction most people were walking I could actually already grasp in which location the village was from here. It was about a half a mile to the north, obviously I couldn’t actually sense that far off but every one that passed by this area headed in that direction which gave me the conclusion. Regarding the distant it was pretty simple; father once said he was going to the village to buy some supplies. He returned within my senses about 20 minutes later therefore the village had to be pretty close.

The next step in my presence sensor was actually feeling the trees location. I could finally map out the surroundings; there were no houses close by ours. Therefore we lived quite far out from the actual village it seems, the reason why I couldn’t determine. The sense in itself was almost like I had turned into Spiderman and my presence sensor being Spiderman’s spider sense. The idea made me so excited that I continued to push it to the limit even though it was rather tiring at times.

Three days before my 6th birthday, I was so excited that I started running around the house. Mother laughed whole heartily before she finally decided to scold me. Birthdays didn’t seem to be celebrated in this world or not in this race? I wasn’t certain. Either way the excitement had grown to unbarring levels. The reason was not only that I would finally be able to learn magic but that I would also finally have permission to leave the house. Our village was called Coren, one of numerous villages belonging to our race, and every inhabitant had means for education. Education seemed to be voluntary around here though since most people would just help their families gather supplies anyways. For me the question was rather simple of course I wanted education, hanging around here all my life would have been too painful to bear.

Father was one of those people; he had decided to not go since he had to take care of his family. The situation easily became dare in these harsh lands and it was therefore normal for people to not attend. Mother was one of those people who had attended school and she encouraged me to go ever since I picked up reading, something not everyone did on their own it seems. The level of education being taught in the village would probably be questionable since they were so cut off from the rest of the world but the promise of freedom was just too tempting to let it pass.

The day finally arrived; I had turned 6 years old and was finally ready to embark on my journey of magic and education.  I and mother were left alone in the cabin which usually was the case since father was out running errands.

“You want to start right away?” Mother said with a kind smile.

I couldn’t contain my eagerness and almost shouted in response: ”Yes please, right now!”

Vestele chuckled before she came about to talk “Okay in order to even affect the surrounding elements you need to know two things, okay? Listen closely” I nodded in response

“First in order to gather the essence of the elements you need something called Mana, it’s something everyone have to some degree but often is not enough influence the elements. So to counter this weakness of not having enough internal mana elves and all races alike developed methods to absorb the external mana from nature. When this energy is absorbed we strengthen both ourselves and our control over different elements” Vestele took a deep breath before continuing

“Pharom, do you follow?” I understood to some degree so I nodded

“The effectiveness of the absorption rate in based on two things, first how good the method is, some are better than others and second thing is where you do it. If you are in an environment which correlates with your affinity then you will gain larger benefits” I nodded as she once again decided to take a big breath

“Affinity is which is mentioned before is how good your soul reacts against a certain element. The more affinity you have against something the easier it becomes to train in controlling and conjuring that element”

Before she could finish speaking someone approached the door, based on the way he walked it was without doubt father. I starred at the door and sure enough my crooked nosed father walked through the door.

“Welcome back father”

“Thanks, what are you two doing?”

Vestele turned around with a smile “I am teaching our son magic, darling you should see him, it’s like he understands and absorbs everything I say” she turned and starred at me with a coy smile on her lips.

Ascal just frowned before he diverted his glaze against me “Son, real men should become warriors, not something as fragile as a sorcerer”

Vestele frowned back and starred with an undying gaze “Hey sorcerers can amount to amazing things, don’t you dear looking down on us”

Ascal couldn’t help but breaking out in a laugh “Heh, son, look at your mother doesn’t she look fragile? I could teach you a thing or two if you want” he blinked before moving over towards the fire

This asshole of a father, how with those looks could he possibly have gotten someone as beautiful as Vestele to fall for him. I mean if his personality was sincere and kind I could understand it but not even that..
