Thanks to the magic of the tree spirit, everything Donn destroyed was undone and returned back to normal.
Yeah right.
Things were a freaking mess.
Fire trucks, ambulances, and more law enforcement arrived. Monster corpses littered the street. Some disintegrated into piles of ash. Other corpses left people wide-eyed, tearing the veil of Glamour, leaving them mentally scarred forever. Monsters that my friends had not put down roamed free. The street itself and the homes around the epicenter were all but decimated.
Through it all the tree spirit did keep my Mom’s house whole and intact, even as the floating property slowly lowered back into its original lot.
About an hour or more passed between the time Donn and I disappeared. Once their death lord vanished, his control over his minions did too, leaving them without focus. In that time my friends had made short work of the monsters.
Under Gavin’s guidance my family and friends fought with their backs against my Mom’s house to protect her and Aiden from the horde.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
Without the wizard around, there was no one to wipe memories. Everyone would have to experience this trauma and come to terms with it, one way or another. Even if Nehemiah were here to erase the unsavory bits, there were too many victims involved.
People were evacuated. Injured folks got trips to the hospital. Law enforcement protocol broke a bit. But who could blame them? How do you arrest an Irish zombie? And you can’t call animal control to capture a bird beast with a fifteen foot wingspan.
The news media showed up of course. I caught some of the reporter’s words. “As the viewers at home may recall, a while back a number of missing persons showed up on Skaggs Island, not too far from where we are now. One has to wonder if there are connections between that event, the Six Flags’ incident the other night, and now this incredible, and frankly surreal scene playing out here tonight. Let’s talk to some eyewitnesses.”
I realized we needed to get the heck out of there before they tried to question us. They tried to corner us, but Iarfhlaith ground their camera to dust between his pointer finger and thumb. It was a little late for that though. The cat was out of the bag.
Now that people were somewhat safe, cell phones were out, streaming the events live online. I’d defeated Donn, but the crazed lord of the dead had torn the shroud of Glamour and let the world know that magic and monsters were real. On Halloween night no less.
Things would never be the same.
But I didn’t have time to consider the ramifications.
I had another concern.
