The Seeker's Path

The Seeker's Path

“Professor Keith.” A pleasant voice brought Jack back to reality. He looked up to see a black-haired boy exuding a lazy vibe.

“Uh…Vin?” Jack smiled. “Do you have a question? Make it quick. My next class starts in a few minutes.”

The black-haired boy smiled strangely. “Not really. I would like to give you an answer to your question instead.” He chuckled at the puzzled expression on Jack’s face.

“It’s not actually an answer. It’s a path. This path exists just to find the answer to your question. Those who take this path are called ‘Seekers’.” The black-haired boy waved a hand and the world turned silent.

Jack looked around in shock. Everybody was frozen. It was like…time had stopped! He pinched his fingers disbelievingly. “It’s real. It was actually real.”

….

One week before.

“I gotta admit that this chair was well worth the price.” Jack gave a relieved sigh as he sat on the West Elm Harris Leather Power recliner. He opened a jar containing peanuts as he watched the hustle and bustle below.

As a young and rich professor, he didn’t hesitate to spend his money when he felt it mattered. His condo’s balcony gave him a nice view over the streets of Manhattan. Jack was feeling especially lazy because he knew he would be back to work the next day.

He raised a cup of water and smiled. “Cheers to comfort- “

BOOM!

Out of nowhere, he was interrupted by a loud sound. Just as he surmised it was thunder, a booming voice roared out.

“Chu Wufang! George! Are you guys crazy? How dare you fight without entering the Psi Realm.”

A gruff voice roared back. “You only know how to point out my mistakes. This time, I used a rank 9 [Brain Freeze] skill but you didn’t even commend me.”

The first voice sounded even more angry. “Those are the rules you should obey before you fight! Why should I commend you for obeying the rules?”

“I tried to tell him but he didn’t listen.” This came from an entirely different voice. Though it was loud, it sounded indifferent.

“You pretentious fraud!”

There was another loud boom. A building was instantly deformed. It was like a cannon shot through it.

The cup of water and the jar fell out of Jack’s arms. ‘What the hell is happening?’ He stared at the unbelievable sight in shock.

The magnificent Rockefeller Plaza had a truck sized hole added to it. Or was it taken?

People, who were frozen like statues, plunged downward before they were slowed by an invisible force and settled onto the ground.

“That’s it!” The booming voice sounded extremely angry. “The two of you are fine one billion soul coins each!”

The indifferent voice cursed. “Vice President, I didn’t do anything. He was the one who attacked!”

Jack was dumbfounded. ‘It was a single person who attacked? What in tarnation were their weapons?’

“Two billion soul coins!” The booming voice shouted.

“Fine. Fine.”

Jack watched in shock as the damaged building began to be restored like it seemed time was reversing. In a few minutes everything was back to normal.

“I want to see those coins in 24 hours!” The booming voice instructed.

After some seconds, the silence was gone with the chattering and shouts of people. It was like nothing happened.

Jack ran to his car and drove to the Rockefeller Plaza. Everything seemed good and undamaged. He had just seen a huge hole!

As he took in the totally normal happenings around him. He came to a conclusion. He must have been hallucinating!

Back to present.

‘So, I really wasn’t hallucinating?’ Jack glanced at the people around him who were frozen like statues. He looked back at the black- haired boy. “You call yourselves ‘Seekers’?
