Fifth Night: Rest

Tonight, Lady Luck was on my side.

I was walking along with the pup, along with his leaf backpack,

Where had he gotten it?

I was wondering the question when he suddenly rushed in a direction yipping and barking.

The sun was fading slowly and I hadn’t set up camp, yet I followed. I followed him to spot him happily wagging his tail jumping in circles, in front of a cave

I laughed at the sight, it was still midday, we didn't need shelter just yet. I scuffled the top of his head and told him what I thought.

He just tilted his head at me and, with his nose, pointed towards the cave.

It took a while until I had figured out what he wanted to see, but when I saw it, this wasn't a cave, or well it was a cave but it was more of a tunnel and from the looks of it, it also looked like it had an exit about 200 metres away maybe more.

Giving me the smuggest face that a dog could possibly give, he entered.

I soon followed. A great gush of wind blew itself across my face as I took a step towards the cave and I clumsily righted myself up.

"That was close" the pup, unimpressed, turned back to walking after barking at me to hurry.

"Hey! I'm just gonna check up on my rations, go ahead, I'll catch up!" I yelled, placing myself atop a rock by the entrance.

I searched my pockets for berries, my left one held three berries, one of each kind that I've tried, I placed one by my side for later and the others back, and my right pocket contained none.

I wriggled my hand in the small pocket, where my fingers would usually touch the bottom, it now felt nothing but air.

I looked down in silence and saw something strange, a small dark shadow passed by my seated legs and darted to the forest.

My eyes tracked its movements and it stopped to turn to me before entering the bushes.

To me it seemed to be a fox of some sort, with red streaks at the tips of its head and paws, it made a hihi sound, as if it was laughing at me and had a small blue mouth.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

It jumped into the bushes and reached for my berry besides me.

Pat pat

I felt the smooth coolness of the stone.

That's odd, I could swear I placed it here

I checked back to my pockets to find the two berries there, the spicy and raspberry lookalike, but then…

Oh, I yelled aloud, that fox was going to pay for stealing my berry, well I didn't pay for it either but, it was mine.

A rumbling sound could be heard and the rock that I was sat upon started to shake, the first thing to come to mind was an earthquake.

Looking back at the cave I stood at the entrance and yelled as loud as I could to the pup.

"There's going to be a cave in!"

The pup, at this point was pretty far gone down the tunnel that when he had heard my voice and turned, rocks and rubble started to fall from the top of the cave.

He ran, the pup using all four legs to run to my direction, the scene would have been cinematic if it weren't for the possibility of a cave in.

The Rock besides me moved to the air, a connection of other rocks, larger than it, flew into the air along with it.

The line led underneath the cave. I could feel another rumble and see the entrance, starting to collapse.

My legs moved on instinct, the pup was right there a few more seconds and he'd make it on his own, but continuously travelling and not stopping to take a break, like I had, was draining on him.

I stumbled, my hands grazing the ground and ran, as fast as I could, he was going to be safe.

I ran past the falling debris and made my way down the tunnel to the pup. By the time I got to him, he was stumbling and fell to the ground.

I picked him up as fast as I could and yelled,

"Are you okay!?"

The sound of snoring hit my ears and I calmed slightly, I was still pretty close to the entrance, a couple of metres and I'll be.

Thud!

A large boulder fell down from the ceiling, almost crushing me and blocking the entrance, now exit.

An eye looked at me. Was I going crazy? Rocks didn have eyes and if they did, then something crazy is going on.

I thought about it and realised that one of my friends was great at molding clay sculptures, he probably knew someone who could make larger scale projects and happened to shape something similar to an eye.

What does it mean though?

I didn't have time to think as another rock came down next to me and I ran the opposite direction, towards the end of the tunnel.

I heard a loud "Onix!" from behind and sprinted down the corridor.

Rocks fell one by one forcing me to manoeuvre and dodge the falling rocks, with varying degrees of success.

One, two, three Ow! Ugh! Four…

My mind went to auto-pilot as I counted in my steps, each step took me closer to the light and I stepped further and further.

A sudden rumble caught me off guard, a stone caught my vision, it differed from the previous ones.

As before the rocks and rubble were falling from the cave roof, this stone came from under.

The stone blocked my view of the exit, leaving me in darkness, another rumble sounded across the tunnel and the stone went under once again.

At that point, it didn't matter, a large rock fell from the cavern roof and replaced the stone, blocking out the exit and the light went out along with it.

My legs gave out from below and I felt the soft body of the pup breathing in and out softly from the grasp of my hand.

I cried, I had failed, in an instant we were both trapped in a layer of rubble, with who knows how many layers of rocks.

Layered in darkness I held the pup tightly to my chest and laid on the ground weeping in self loathing.

"We can't have the story end here can we?"

A strange voice entered my ears as I felt my conscience fade.
